AC Milan could still move for striker Olivier Giroud but are not willing to pay a fee to land him, according to a report.
MilanNews have provided some clarification on the situation that has developed over the past few days, during which it seemed Giroud was destined to join Milan but then a one-year renewal was triggered.
The report claims that Giroud was attracting interest from other Premier League clubs like Tottenham and Chelsea – in order not to strengthen direct competitors domestically – exercised the unilateral option to renew the contract.
At the same time there was bad communication between the player’s agents, and they confirmed that if a proposal were to arrive from abroad, they would ask Chelsea to let Giroud go on a free transfer.
Milan also wanted to specify that they would not pay a fee to Chelsea, but that at zero, they would take Giroud. The situation is still open but with the European Championships about to start, it could be that it takes a few weeks to resolve.
