MN: One month of the mercato remains – what Milan have done and need to do

By Isak Möller -

There is now one month left of the transfer window and although Milan have done a lot thus far, there are still some positions they need to reinforce. In other words, we can expect to see at least a few more signings.

As highlighted by MilanNews, Paolo Maldini and Ricky Mascara have done well to on the transfer market thus far. Gigio Donnarumma left and was immediately replaced by Mike Maignan for a mere €13m, with a much more reasonable salary.

Hakan Calhanoglu also left at the start of the summer and the Rossoneri managed to bring back Brahim Diaz (the new No.10) on a loan with an option to buy (€22m total). Real Madrid will have a buy-back clause at €27m.

Furthermore, Mario Manduzkic was far from a success and he departed at the end of the season. To fix that gap, Milan signed Olivier Giroud from Chelsea for a fee of €1m plus an additional €1m in bonuses.

For the left-hand side, having sold Diego Laxalt, the Rossoneri secured Fode Ballo-Toure from Monaco for just €4m. It doesn’t stop with these signings, as Milan also redeemed Fikayo Tomori and Sandro Tonali for €28m and around €10m respectively.

With that said, there is still some work to do for Milan: a playmaker, a right-back and a fourth-choice midfielder are needed and a third striker could be useful. Then, of course, we have the likely sales to deal with, such as Samu Castillejo and Andrea Conti.

  1. Need: 1st AM, 1st/2st RW, 4th DMF, 3rd CF, 2nd RB.. that all.

At least: Vlasic, Ziyech/Illicic, Bakayoko, Daramy, and Dalot.

  2. We don’t need a right back because we have Calabria and Kalulu; and Pobega is a more than adequate as a fourth choice midfielder. If we spend money on unnecessary additions in those areas, there will be less money where we really do need to spend: right wing and playmaker.

  3. Sales are more important than purchases at this point IMO.

Until Castillejo, Conti, Caldara, Romangoli and a midfielder are moved on, the club can’t be buying replacements for them. Possible exception for an attacking midfielder, but even there it’s not like Diaz can’t be a starter.

  4. ACM and RW are MUSTS. Back up RB and another defensive mid (Karmara) would be ideal. Sellin Romagnoli so we don’t let him leave for free next summer is also a MUST. So far we haven’t done much of anything except keep some of the players we already had (Diaz Tomori and Tonali); replaced Dalot Mandzucik and Donnaruma with Ballo-Toure Giroud and Maignan, and replaced Miete with Poegba and lost Hakan….Pretty underwhelming and not enough to compete for top 4 and certainly not enough to do anything in CL. Apparently we cannot sign anyone until we sell more players (despite being told all of the $$ we saved on Donnaruma would be reinvested into the club for transfers. So far all we did was use the CL qualification $$). Let’s see what we do next but I wouldn’t get our hopes up high. At best we will end up with Illic and maybe Bakayoko. That’s it and that will not get it done IMO
