MN: The curious case of Tonali – his playing time has dipped dramatically but his future is clear

By Oliver Fisher -

A large section of the Milan fan base have begun to question what has happened with midfielder Sandro Tonali given his lack of recent playing time.

As MilanNews writes, after a very successful period due to the unavailability of Ismael Bennacer, Tonali has returned to sitting on the bench regularly. Stefano Pioli has preferred to deploy the two more physical midfielders in Kessie and Meite over Tonali, and now that all four are fit the former Brescia midfielder is struggling for game time.

The report adds that the 21-year-old has never completely convinced Pioli and has never been decisive in terms of goals and assists. Despite 25 appearances in the league, 11 in the Europa League and one in the Italian Cup, he has not managed a single goal or assist.

Since Bennacer returned regularly from the first minute, Tonali has collected just 83 minutes. In three different matches the former Brescia star never even entered the field, a management of the talent that leaves many doubts, especially since Soualiho Meite has been preferred to him many times and he has an uncertain future.

The Rossoneri management though are happy with Tonali’s performance in this first season with the Rossoneri, and are convinced of the fact that he has yet to express all his qualities to the fullest. This is why his option to buy from Brescia for €15m does not seem to be in question.

  1. PT dipped because Pioli prefers to put on trash like Meite who not once has helped us win a game and has not once added defensive stability. Tonali was improving consistently and Pioli halted all that in an instant… awful manager.
