MN: The latest on Maignan and Loftus-Cheek after injury problems

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli was forced to make two changes during the second half of the 0-0 draw against Newcastle United because of injury concerns.

According to the latest from MilanNews, there is a small sigh of relief regarding Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s physical condition. The English midfielder went down after beating Tonali to the byline and crossing, but he was seen mouthing ‘just cramp’ and this has now been confirmed.

It is a different story for Mike Maignan though, who dropped to the floor away from the ball in pain, and he had to make way for Marco Sportiello 16 minutes from the end. The French goalkeeper was replaced due to a strain in his left flexor, and further evaluations will follow.

Stefano Pioli was asked about the condition of both players during an interview with Sky after the game, and he had a more optimistic outlook on Maignan.

“Maignan felt a little something, he says little and I trust him. Loftus-Cheek just a fatigue, a cramp. It’s clear that we play a lot, we play too much and the players who have played for the national team raise the risk of injuries,” he said (via MilanNews).

  1. Goddamnit, this is simply astonishing… I mean, come on, is Maignan made of crystal?! Because something like that isn’t possible, I’ve never seen a goalkeeper get injured so much in my life…

    1. I guess all that walking and standing was too much for his body… I love the guy but it might be better to sell him next summer and get a GK who stays fit 90% of the season.

  2. You cannot offer Maignan a big contract when he gets hurt this often. You just can’t. And from doing nothing. He barely moved in this game. How do you get injured?

  3. You can feel something is strange with Maignan.

We had luck with his good performance in first year, but in last 2 seasons many things changed.

In all that bad luck I hope we will have good with Sportiello.

    1. Nothing has changed, he’s still performing at top level even with his injuries. Remember he’s the most valuable GK on the planet for a reason.

  4. I had a lot of faith in sportiello, atleast he’s an upgrade to tatarasu. Plus Pioli relies too much on individual players like leao and giroud

    1. Milan don’t have a coach.. He need to be sack.. how can you relies on Giroud every time.. Every coach knows your game plan.. Imagine Krunic that can’t make good pass… We need a good coach that can used talented younger player.. Milan play like 1954 team with no coach… he need to be sack.. sack the stupid coach with very low brain..

      1. Ironically Milan of the 50s were an actually good team with the likes of Cesare Maldini, Gunnar Nordhal, Nils Liedholm, Gunnar Green, Lorenzo Buffon etc.

So they were very very actually great.

  5. dude knowing his players condition but still play them week in and out….with some of them had this history with injury nonetheless…..

  6. Surprise surprise. Time to sell Mike tbh. We can still get a decent amount of he recovers quickly and has a good season
RLC let’s hopes it’s just cramp but you do get the feeling the lackmof rotation as is typical with Pioli is part and parcel of injuries. Some players love to play 50 games per season while others are best suited to play 30 good games

  7. Maignan is a phenomenal goalkeeper but every season we lose him for months on end.. We can’t rely on a player like this, no matter how good he is…

  8. Dude, relax , it is just flexor injury . He will be recovered in 2 weeks ( maignan ) . But of course if he keep injury that will make management dont want give him his deman 8-10m euro nett salary
