MN: Why Milan are increasingly evaluating early termination of Gabbia’s loan

By Oliver Fisher -

The potential early return of Matteo Gabbia from his loan spell at Villarreal has been floated as an idea in recent days, and a report has claimed that it is a concrete possibility.

Gabbia left in the summer to go on a one-year dry loan to Villarreal, and MilanNews report that the management are evaluating more seriously by the day the idea of trying to cut it short by six months.

Bringing the Italian back to base is at present the most easily viable solution for Milan, but they are of course probing other profiles at the same time ahead of the reopening of the January transfer window.

Gabbia could be a safe bet for Milan. The 24-year-old has played 11 games this season so far with seven coming in LaLiga, amassing a total of 794 minutes, showing that he is far from an immovable starter for Villarreal.

Furthermore, having done all the preseason preparations with Milan and with many games already under his belt, he knows the technical-tactical needs of the team well and would have the humility to accept being a reserve again once the emergency subside.

The first contacts between Milan and Villarreal have taken hold, but they should intensify during the week to reach an early termination of the loan agreement. The window opens on January 2 and it will probably not be possible to register him for the Coppa Italia game that day, but he would certainly be available for the game after.

The option is there and will be taken into serious consideration, especially after it is understood whether Milan will still have European competitions (Champions League or Europa League) to play in.
