Montolivo explains negative impact of jeering at San Siro: “It’s really tough”

In recent weeks, with multiple season targets thrown out the window, the fans have made themselves heard at San Siro. As explained by Riccardo Montolivo, playing through the jeering is really difficult.

Curva Sud, the Milan ultras, have made their stance very clear in the last few weeks. In addition to not showing up for the first 15 minutes of several games, they have continued to chant ‘Cardinale, you have to sell, go away’.

Speaking to Mediaset, as transcribed by MilanNews, the former Milan captain Montolivo was asked about the tense atmosphere. He made it clear that support is needed at all times to get the best out of the players.

“It’s tough, it’s really tough… From an emotional point of view, because you always want the stadium by your side, then it’s difficult to perform at a certain level, especially in difficulty, as soon as the jeers start a bit of discouragement also comes.

“Conceicao must be good at creating a group, at uniting in this moment of difficulty and reaching Europe all together. I don’t know what, but he has quality and he must try to get it out from here to the end,” he stated.

Milan are currently six points behind top four but since the protests have mainly been about the corporate struggles of the club, the tense atmosphere will most likely remain between now and the end of the season.

  1. yesterday at the futuro game, they also presented a banner against their own team. i became Milan supporter due to Maldini, Seedorf, etc. but also due to very impressive choreos and effort from the supporters over the years. what i see now is just embarrising (i mean the support not the team). i still trust in Sergio that we’ll overcome even this disaster. Forza Milan!

  2. I will say that the toxic environment around Milan is drawing me further from the club than the actual performances. I hate how the fans at San Siro are treating the players. I think it’s very hurtful towards the players to show that kind of disrespect. I come from a town in Sweden where we have quite a small team with about 3000-5000 attendees / game. And I’ve grown up with the fan section always supporting the team. Even when they are down the fans keep singing. I guess the team is not spoiled for success so we can almost never be disappointed and angry the way Milan fans can be.

I pray for a good end of the season so we can move forward with positivity for next season.

    1. Comparing a small team in Sweden with 3k to 5k attendees, with a football juggernaut like Ac Milan with 80k attendees numerous accolades and a star studded history of players.

I think you missed any chance at any point you would have made.

Saying the fans are spoiled with success. That is almost as Laughable as saying bad performances should be celebrated.

Reality check this is Ac Milan. The top and the best is always what is needed here. You might want to remember that, before you attempt weak comparisons.

  3. I do understand why the fans are angry and want do protest but I think they need to do keep it away from the team. They can protest outside the stadium, maybe before the team enters the pitch and after it exits. In the end of the day we are following AC Milan cuz we love the team and want it to succeed on the pitch and all this protest, some of it directed against our players only helps our opponents. When you are boosted by confidence and have belief in your abilities, you can do remarkable things that stuns the crowd, and on the opposite, if your confidence is at the rock bottom, you always look for the easiest, safest thing to avoid mistakes (and more jeers) and your body becomes tense and mistakes even come because of all this.

My point is: lets support our team when they are on the field so that we can maximize their output and keep the protest on against those that deserve it but not at the cost of our team :Þ
