One of the issues that continues to arouse mystery surrounding the contracts of certain AC Milan players is the future of captain Davide Calabria.
Calabria came through the youth academy and made his senior debut a decade ago, eventually getting the armband on a permanent basis when the previous club captain Alessio Romagnoli departed for Lazio on a free transfer.
However, his contract has wound down into its final year and while there is talk of Mike Maignan’s renewal being close, nothing suggests that Calabria is soon expected to pen a fresh deal with his boyhood club.
Now, Matteo Moretto of Relevo has provided an intriguing update as he states: “No relevant contact between Milan and Davide Calabria for the renewal. Situation in total stand-by. To date, the parties have never really addressed the issue. The right-back has a contract expiring in June.”
Calabria has made 261 appearances for the Rossoneri across all competitions, racking up nine goals and 21 assists, but the signing of Emerson Royal from Spurs during the summer transfer window has thrust what was a previously guaranteed starting spot into doubt.
At the moment it seems Paulo Fonseca prefers the Brazilian, so it will be interesting to see if that players into the renewal talks (or lack thereof) and if any interested clubs come forward for Calabria, after Galatasaray tried in the summer.
Scudetto winner. Get out.
He sucks. Even the abysmal Emerson is a bit better than Calabria. Sell him in Winter and lets find a proper right back
