Moretto: Milan have made a decision regarding Jovic’s future – the latest

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have already made a decision regarding the future of Luka Jovic and they will soon sit down to speak to his entourage, according to one journalist.

Jovic arrived at Milan on the final day of the summer transfer window on a free transfer from Fiorentina, though he only signed a contract until the end of the 2023-24 season which means a call will have to be made on whether to renew or not.

Speaking in his latest column for CaughtOffside, Matteo Moretto provided the latest updates regarding the future of the Serbia international.

“I can confirm that Milan wants to renew Luka Jovic and Jovic wants to continue at Milan. The parties will soon sit down to reach an agreement on the renewal, during that meeting they will make the numbers work,” he said.

Jovic scored again today in the 3-3 draw against Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium, and it was one which brought the game back to 3-2 thus setting up the dramatic finish.

The ball was worked wide to Leao who tried a cross with the outside of his boot that Consigli could only push into the path of Jovic, with the former Real Madrid striker firing into a virtually empty net first time.

  1. That’s the best scenario. He’s a good sub player and they can still sell him later and make a profit since he came for free.

    1. He’ll block Okafor and others coming through.

I’d let him go and then use Okafor across the front 3 next season. He’ll end up playing 30 plus games and it’ll keep him really sharp.

  2. Easy decision. We don’t need to spend another 20 mil on a random backup CF from an unproven league. He’s a proven super sub with us, and signs for a free. Easy choice. Now just use all that cash on a quality starting striker, and the attacking depth is pretty set. Then we can focus on a creative attacking mid and a GK if Maignan ends up being sold. I hope he stays tho. But we definitely need a proven playmaker, or to play Puli in the 10, Chuk out Right, and maybe give Romero a chance as the RW backup next season. Guys like him and Maldini have done well on loan, they deserve a chance to prove themselves, and even guys like Chaka should be given more minutes next season

  3. Given the circumstances (we need 2 strikers) it makes good sense to keep him. He knows the team, he was a good sub player and more importantly he costs nothing.
In the future it would be good to get a better sub striker, we need one if we want to aim higher (winning trophies) but for next year the important thing is to focus on the starter striker.

    1. Nah we need to chose between him and Okafor, and I’d choose the latter.

If we keep both and sign a new CF it’ll just become too unfocused.

      1. Why choose between the two? Okafor can play on the wings. He’s easily a sub for either Puli or Leao. He’s a utility man who can also play forward. Jovic is a striker. He’s the sub for whomever the new striker is.

        1. We need to choose because every second a player is not on the pitch they lose match sharpness.

This is the problem with the bloated squads.

The players that come in lack match sharpness, and they usually come in either when there’s injuries (so other players are already struggling) or against ‘weaker’ teams that are not only sharp but hungry for the wins.

Most title winning teams had 4-3 or 3-2 combos i.e. 4 players for 3 positions or 3 players for 2 positions.

          Duff/Cole/Robben
          Ambrosini/Pirlo/Seedorf/Gattuso
          Wiltord/Pires/Ljungberg
          BBC plus Cáceres
Butt/Scholes/Keane (sometimes even covering for Beckham and Giggs)
          Iniesta/Neymar/Messi/Suárez

This allows for seamlessly dropping players in.

There’s a core of about 18 players who play 30-40 plus matches.

Forget injuries. If we get injuries like this season we can forget about winning anything.

Managing injuries is a prerequisite for success.

DISLAIMER: This is entirely made up:

My theory is also that bloated squads also lead to more injuries:
          – less match sharpness;
          – less focus in training.
