Moretto: Milan prepare player-plus-cash offer for Bologna star Zirkzee – the figures

By Isak Möller -

Joshua Zirkzee has ended up at the top of AC Milan’s wish list ahead of the summer, with Olivier Giroud expected to say goodbye. However, as the price tag is rather high, the Rossoneri will have to get creative with their offer.

Giroud has more or less agreed to join the MLS side LAFC and will thus say goodbye to Milan at the end of his contract this summer. This has certainly intensified the Rossoneri’s pursuit of a striker and it seems Bologna star Zirkzee is at the top of their wish list.

As highlighted by the journalist Matteo Moretto, speaking to Radio Rossonera, Milan are preparing a player-plus-cash offer for the Dutchman. The money part of the offer could reach around €30m, while the remaining €10m would be the valuation of the player(s).

Indeed, Zirkzee has a €40m release clause which is valid for all teams and not just Bayern Munich, as Moretto highlights. While there is interest from the Premier League, the 22-year-old would like to continue in Serie A next season as well.

The main suspects counterpart-wise are Alexis Saelemaekers, who is currently on loan with the Rossoblu, and the youngster Lorenzo Colombo. The latter’s value is to be defined, but the Belgian has a price tag of around €10m.

  1. So wait, all of a sudden the 40M release clause is valid for any club?! WTF? That’s a huge development, if true.

    1. Fabrizio Romano said some time ago that the release clause for clubs other than Bayern is 40 mln. For Bayern it is 20 mln. If another club buys him for 40 mln, half of that goes to Bayern’s coffers. So Milan need to pay 40 mln for him.

  2. If the release clause of 40 mil for every club is true, and Zirkzee wants to stay in Italy, it benefits Bologna to accept counterparts in the transfer. That way they will have to give Bayern less money from their 50% sell on clause.
Saelemaekers and Colombo combined should be around 15 mil. Give them another 25 and get it done.

    1. I doubt Bologna can get players in exchange that easily. Bayern have the right to get 50% of Zirkzee’s money, and the players being exchanged are part of that “money”. I guess Bologna will have to give Bayern 20 mln, even if it gets players for Zirkzee.

      1. What?
Bayern is getting half of the money exchanged not of the total value of the transfer.
Bologna can send Zirkzee to Milan and Milan can send Bologna multiple players worth combined 40 mil and Bayern won’t get a dime from the transfer.
Look up Rebic – Andre Silva transfer and how much Fiorentina got for their 50% sell on clause on Rebic.

          1. That’s the standard in every transfer with a sell on clause. It’s not about Bayern being dumb or not.
Every club gets percentage of the money that exchanged hands.

      2. @Z

I think you’re right, depends on the wording but yes looking at the Rebic / Andre Silva deal this is exactly what happened.

Ie if we give Bologna 25mn + Colombo and both sides agree to value Colombo at 1mn, then the total transfer will be 26mn and Bologna only give Bayern 50% ie 13mn. Instead of the same transfer deal but we value Colombo at 15mn so total transfer is 40mn, in which case Bologna would have to give Bayern 20mn cash.

So both sides are incentivised to use this loophole and screw over Bayern (just like Milan / Eintracht did to Fiorentina)

I guess the downside is it annoys Bayern, and may cause poor relations for transfers in future. But it is what it is and I don’t think Cardinale & co care about long term relations with the German giants

  3. The question : bologna willing to accept saladmaker & colombo ? This deal depend on that 2 player agreement too , if both player refuse moving to bologna then zirkzee deal will collapse

  4. Bayern nije glup !! Cjena 40 mil ne važi za Bayern !! On ga može povuć za 20 mil a prodat 50 mil te stavit u špag 30 mil !!
