Moretto shares update on Maignan’s renewal with Milan: “Nothing is happening”

By Isak Möller -

Mike Maignan’s contract will expire in 2026 and it’s believed that AC Milan are working on a contract renewal. However, contrary to that belief, Matteo Moretto has stated that the Rossoneri currently aren’t in talks with the goalkeeper.

Maignan is considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world and although this season has had its ups and downs, Milan are preparing significant pay rise. After the Gigio Donnarumma debacle, they don’t want to lose another valuable goalkeeper.

Previous reports have suggested that the Rossoneri have opened talks with Maignan’s entourage, with a Rafael Leao-esque salary on the cards. However, as reported by Matteo Moretto in Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing, there are currently no talks between the parties.

‘Nothing is happening currently’, per the journalist, as Milan are focused on the remainder of the season. There will obviously be discussions in due course but there is nothing advanced on the table for now. Seeing as the negotiations are set to be tough, this might sound a bit strange.

Theo Hernandez also has a contract that will expire in 2026 but unlike the goalkeeper, the negotiations should be easier. Then again, if a big offer were to arrive in the summer for any of these players, then Milan will evaluate the situation.

  1. Because it expires in 2 years not 1 year, they’ll negotiate in the summer and if nothing there’s plenty of suitors for him

We dont need to be held ransom yet again

  2. I’m not sure Maignan’s requests are going to drop below 7m or 6.5m. Maignan is pushing for a comparable salary to Onana (GK left to ManU last year) and Theo/Leao (to show he’s one of the key players)

Personally, I don’t think Milan should splash out that much $$$ on a keeper right now. Milan has too many other needs. Forward and DM are most important right now and there are other areas that need addressing too.

Keep in mind, bumping his salary up has other implications. He currently takes up ~2.5% of the wage budget. If he gets his increase, his cut goes to > 7% of total wage bill. (assuming wage buget is the same next year, ~103m)

Over a 5 year period, that extra 5m/yr he’s asking for, amounts to 25m – buying a new player. Except for Chuk, most signings last year were under 25m FYI.

I like Maignan as a GK but not at that price. Bad idea all around. Moneyball Moncada can’t moneyball salaries, so I except him to leave.

    1. He doesn’t have to leave anywhere or anyways the needful thing is that if his wage bill is increased to at least 5.5m for another 5 years while another keeper learns his style and competes with him for period of that 5 years and one will stand between the sticks during the league while another keeper is between the sticks during another competition, either cup or champions league
