Theo Red Cards

GdS: ‘Most red cards in last six years’ – Theo’s worrying disciplinary record

Theo Hernandez has often captained AC Milan this season, and even last season. However, he lacks the qualities to do so, and perhaps he has done so for some time.

We can start with the basics. A captain should be the last one running, the one encouraging his side, and someone who his teammates can rely on. Right now, that is far from the definition of Theo, but we could have said this months ago.

Look back to the start of the season for example, the Frenchman made several daft mistakes due to a lack of application, and this makes his actual talent level worthless. Unfortunately, it has been a case of this continuing rather than becoming a memory of the past.

Then we come to the point of reliance, and as Gazzetta dello Sport write, this point cannot be said about the Frenchman, given he has the ‘most red cards in the last six years’.

In recent months, he has been the defender who scored the most goals for Milan, but that narrative has changed, and with it, so has his future.

No player has gotten more red cards in Serie A in the past six years, and only one player has more in Europe (8). Across his career, he has been dismissed nine times, for a range of things; protests, simulation, slaps.

Since February 2020, he has received six red cards, a terrible record, and a reminder that he cannot be relied upon.

The facts pile against him for the future.

  1. And iirc, Theo’s red cards often were due to non tactical fouls, which are typical and perhaps quite “acceprable” for defenders, to prevent the opponents having high chance of scoring. While for him, most of the time were silly fouls or behaviors (cmiiw).
He is surely not a captain material.

  2. But, according to @Maldini Heir, Theo was never a problem before. He only became a problem after MH’s favorite coach Pioli got fired.

  3. I have to fight this scapegoat narrative. First it was Krunic, then Calabria, then Leao and now Theo. Again, these are players who delivered in the right environment.
Yes, Theo has let us down several times this season but he is a symptom of a much bigger problem. Last season we had nine red cards. This season we are currently at six. That’s 15 sending offs (three for Theo) in less than two seasons! We’ve had it all, poor tactical positioning, naivety, or just pure frustration due to results and performances. Redbird and their management team created this chaos with their unprofessional behaviour and their haphazard transfers. The fix needs to start at the top.
