Musah explains role against Real Madrid and names his favourite: “Number 8”

Yunus Musah spoke to the media after what was a big win for AC Milan against Real Madrid. Doing well in a slightly different role, the American was understandably pleased.

Musah was the big surprise of the starting XI, or at least the biggest change, as Paulo Fonseca deployed him as a right-winger on paper. Quite clearly, this was a way to deal with Vinicius Jr on the left and the move paid off.

The American did well from start to finish and as you can imagine, he was very happy after the referee blew his whistle for full-time. Speaking to Sky Italia after the game, as transcribed by MilanNews, the midfielder discussed the game and his ideal position.

On the contained emotion, because of Valencia…

“We must not forget that we are very lucky to have played, to be healthy and to have played a good game. Many people have lost their lives. They are all united and love each other so much, I am sure that they will get through this situation.”

On tonight’s start and his position on the pitch…

“I was surprised when the coach told me I was playing, I didn’t expect it. It was a very tough match. Credit to Vinicius who is an exceptional player and we had to double on him with a five-man defence, we were also very careful about the depth.”

On his favourite position…

“We played very well against Napoli, we weren’t worried about the future and we knew we were dangerous. My ideal position is box-to-box, number 8. But I can also play as the wing-back in a five-man backline.”

Milan will be up against Cagliari next and it’s very possible that Musah could play from start, though that game doesn’t exactly require additional defensive support. Since the game is on Saturday already, a lot will come down to the physical status.

  1. “The American did well from start to finish”

Good game from him overall, but now go and watch penalty situation again and watch how he reacted in that situation ,and tell me again that was well from start to finish.

      1. …and our 2nd goal doesn’t happen until Rudiger makes that silly pass…

This is football man. You win some and you lose some.

  2. His mistakes tend to come from poor judgment and decision-making. But the benefit of his athleticism mixed with a good work ethic outweigh the risk that he will make poor decisions, such as the silly give-away. He worked hard today and made some spectacular plays. Keep playing him.

    1. His skill also comes from good judgment and decision-making. He is athletic, but there are many athletes; it doesn’t mean you can put yourself in the wrong positions when defending. His 1 v 1 defending requires positioning and quick decision-making. His athletism and work ethic make it possible for him to use those skills.

        1. agreed with you matt, but i believe milan should loan him as he need consistency to improve, more playing time . something he won’t get in milan

          1. We must have watched a different game. He broke their press open over and over. He did Modric dirty on multiple occasions making him almost a target and getting leao a free 1v1. Maybe a loan to Napoli…Conte was interested and he doesn’t ask for someone unless he knows they can play.

          2. You loan a player like him. Our squad is not deep enough and will require his services. With his strength I think he is the only player who can replace Fofana because he is versatile. We are in 3 competitions so there are many games to be played.

  3. Get a freaking #6 so we can play these lads in their roles!

    Tijj/Zeroli – #6 – Fofana/Musah

And you have your midfield without wasting any more money on it!

  4. So Musah likes to play as an 8 and did well as an 8.
Reijnders did state that he likes to play as an 8, did freaking well as an 8, and was actually brought as an 8.
We have NO attacking midfielders: Loftus-Cheek didn’t do well there, Reijnders didn’t do well there, Pulisic did a bit better but is WAY better on the wings.
If this doesn’t have 4-3-3 written on it, I don’t know what has.
    Also, get Ricci.

  5. after the last few games, i’m a bit more optimistic that he will some day understand that he just cant dribble past all players. still one nonsense dribbling yesterday, but overall he finally starts passing and making less bad decisions.

    1. Being able to carry the ball through the midfield is a great skill to have. The kid is 21 and is obviously learning/improving. Shows up for big games like this (and US v Eng in last WC).
