Newcastle publish Tonali statement after latest developments in betting scandal

By Oliver Fisher -

Newcastle United have pledged to give Sandro Tonali their full support as more news continues to emerge about the betting scandal involving Italian players.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport reported this morning, Tonali is the subject of an investigation into sports betting on illegal platforms carried out in parallel by the Turin Prosecutor’s Office and the FIGC Prosecutor’s Office.

However, things took a more sinister turn as it emerged during the interrogations involving the Public Prosecutor Manuela Pedrotta in Turin and the Federal Prosecutor Giuseppe Chinè that Tonali admitted to having placed bets on football and on Milan.

Tonali was co-operative with the investigators and is aiming for a plea bargain in order to try and get a reduced punishment, but he is already looking at a lengthy ban. Milan, meanwhile, will remain unaffected provided they knew nothing about it.

Via a statement on their official website, Tonali’s club Newcastle responded to the news as follows:

“Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to illegal betting activity.

“Sandro is fully engaging with the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities. He and his family will continue to receive the club’s full support.

“Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”

  1. As a Newcastle United fan, I was happy when he joined Newcastle. He’s a talented player, hopefully he learns from his mistake.
