Newcastle boss explains why Tonali will be a ‘great fit for us’ following Milan departure

By Euan Burns -

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has explained why Sandro Tonali is such a good fit for his team after the Premier League side confirmed that they have signed the Italian midfielder from AC Milan.

Speaking to the Newcastle club website after the deal was announced on Monday, Howe shed light as to why Newcastle acted so swiftly to get Tonali through the door even whilst he was busy at the U21 European Championships.

He also pointed out the experience that Tonali has amassed at first-team level despite still only being 23 years old.

“I’m delighted to welcome Sandro to Newcastle United. He is an exceptional talent and has the mentality, physicality and technical attributes to be a great fit for us,” Howe said.

“At 23, Sandro already has important experience as a key player in one of Europe’s top leagues and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his country.

“But he also has the opportunity and potential to grow and evolve with us, and I’m excited to add him to our squad as we approach the exciting season ahead.”

Tonali became a key player for Milan over the past 18 months and it is a major blow to the squad to lose a midfielder of his quality, but the money from the sale does seem to have kickstarted Milan’s transfer window.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has arrived and others are set to follow in midfield and in attack.
