GdS: November the month of the ‘real Leao’ – the background on his return

Rafael Leao’s season has been highlighted by problems, but this month he has seemingly begun to turn the page, much to the delight of AC Milan.

The cooling break incident, the consistent place among the substitutes, the mandate. This season has been difficult for Leao, and in turn, Milan. However, it seems all parties are moving in the right direction together, and more importantly, that direction is forward.

As Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) writes, Leao’s situation is back to ‘normal’, which will only help the player, and this is likely due to his problems, if there were any, with Fonseca being put to bed, as he revealed in an interview.

But how did we get back to this place?

Fonseca’s ‘cure’

One of the big stalling blocks for the Leao x Paulo Fonseca relationship was the work level. The head coach consistently asked for more from the winger, in every department. A player that could be the leader going forward, but would also prove his value to the team when it mattered most – when his teammates were on the back foot.

As we know, this took time to materialise, but it seems the duo are now on the same page, making everyone a winner. Leao is now a ‘more decisive’ player, and in turn, a more complete one.

The final area of growth

The paper concludes by looking at the room that Leao still has left to develop, stating that his four goals this season can only be improved on as time passes, and after a positive month in November, the ‘real Leao’ can come back.

Ultimately, he has taken steps forward after a period of struggle, a sign of champions, but now the rest of his game must follow if he is to establish himself among the greats, something he very much can do.
