Official: Gabbia completes return to Milan after Villarreal loan termination

The first reinforcement of the January transfer window has arrived for AC Milan as Matteo Gabbia’s return from his loan spell at Villarreal has been confirmed.

Back in July, it was confirmed that Gabbia was heading to Spain for a year. The 23-year-old joined Villarreal a dry loan meaning there was no option or obligation to buy in favour of them, so Milan thus kept control of his future and hoped he would get more consistent playing time.

Milan have really been struggling with injuries in their defensive department over the past few weeks with Fikayo Tomori, Malick Thiaw and Pierre Kalulu all out for some time yet as each sustained serious muscle injuries.

Last night, the defender’s return was pretty much made official when he landed in Milano and gave an interview with Sky in which he revealed his delight to be back at the club he considers it his ‘dream’ to become a starter for.

Now, Milan have announced on their official website that an agreement has been reached to end Gabbia’s loan spell at Villarreal early. As a result, the player will rejoin the first team today and he could therefore be in contention to play against Empoli at the weekend.
