Official: Genoa vs. AC Milan starting XIs – five changes as Jovic starts

By Isak Möller -

Stefano Pioli has decided to make a total of five changes to the starting XI from the game against Borussia Dortmund. Luka Jovic starts up front and will be looking to help the Rossoneri clinch all three points against Genoa.

The rotation was indeed expected as Milan played Dortmund just three days ago, and both of these games are away from home as well. Alessandro Florenzi has replaced Davide Calabria on the right-hand side, but the rest of the defence is the same.

Yaciune Adli is back from start and this also means Tijjani Reijnders starts to the left in the midfield, Up front, it’s an unprecedented attacking trio with Samuel Chukwueze, Luka Jovic and Noah Okafor. The Serbian is even making his first start for the club.

Official Milan XI (4-3-3): Maignan; Florenzi, Thiaw, Tomori, Theo; Musah, Adli, Reijnders; Chukwueze, Jovic, Okafor.

Bench: Sportiello, Mirante, Calabria, Giroud, Leao, Pulisic, Romero, Pellegrino, Pobega, Bartesaghi.

Official Genoa XI (4-4-1-1): Martinez; De Winter, Dragusin, Bani, Vasquez; Sabelli, Thorsby, Frendrup, Haps; Malinovskyi; Gudmundsson.

Bench: Leali, Sommariva; Hefti, Martín, Matturro, Vogliacco; Galdames, Jagiełło, Kutlu; Ekuban, Fini, Pușcaș

        1. Chuk has been the most lively player tonight. Look at Jovic, who didn’t touch the ball for 40 minutes, if you want a scapegoat.

  1. I like this line-up, a lot more than the midweek rubbish with Pobega and Giroud. I hope for the sake of the front three that they perform well. We desperately need one of these guys to replace Giroud, and we need confidence for guys like Chukwueze and Okafor.

  2. Nice to see some more intergration but would still like the assurances of leao being on the pitch. I think jovic could benefit from him, after all, are we keeping him fit for Portugal. Heading into the break, may as well use him as we pay his wages.

  3. I am happy to see us giving time to our new guys. However this lineup may be to extreme.
A front 3 who have played little.
It may have been wise to have started Pulisic, who has had plenty of rest and is good in these games against smaller teams. Also okafor has done well at striker

  4. I’m surprised seeing Theo playing still. But perhaps it’s better playing against Juve than against Napoli without him.

  5. We need this line up because Genoa will like to sit very deep so without Giroud, no unnecessary crosses and a likelihood of a penalty and red card in favor of Milan.
    My prediction: 0-4
    Jovic
    T. R
    Chuk
    Theo

  6. Last game before the break, best lineup needed. But again, the guys are tired this is the right lineup. Giroud, puli and leao needed a break. They can always come on in 2nd half, especially leao and puli. We need these 3 points since that ugly team tied. Lets boys.

  7. Oh no we don’t have youth academy Calabria starting so we’ll be in trouble. I hope Jovic scores a couple so giroud can start to play less. Daring lineup though!

    1. It’s a forum.
What more would fans debate than a starting lineup?
      It’s called being a fan.

Otherwise we could all just post “great line up, looking forward to the win” x 50

The issue on this forum is not people giving their opinion it is people critising them for doing so. Easy solution, leave the forum

      1. Obviously people are in their right to post their opinions but opinions is just that so if people post some nonsense its also in the forums interest that isnt left unquestioned.

          1. sure ted and as i said people ar in the good rioght to post their opinions, im speaking in general on the matter and not taking a jibe against speciffic comments but opinions doesnt mean they are correct and of course fallacies should be questioned and disproven.

        1. We have pretty much identified the toxic part of the forum. Talking about the ones with no argument, just pure hatred towards our players and fans.

  8. I would like the coach to experiment with Leao in the center with Pulisic and Chukwueze on the wings. Now there is some speed!

    1. We get to see Adli, Okafor, Jovic, Chukweze, Musah etc
      well worth the watch.
Very excited to see the new guys show their skills

  9. Love to see Romero pushing for that right wing backup slot – Chuck seeing plenty of the ball but looks a bit one dimensional in the first half

  10. That movement off the ball is just bad. Very static. Game in game out. Come on pioli work on that movement. Jovic seems lost, he hasn’t played in a while so understandable. Chuk on the other hand, should be in tune but he is not clicking. Movement off the ball is crucial.

  11. Chukwueze mostly good. Okafor not involved enough. Jovic invisible and needs to come off. Musah also poor. Second half I want to see front 3 of Leao Okafor Chuk or Pulisic Okafor Chuk.

    1. Yeah I thought Samu did ok. Okafor had some good plays but looked isolated, Jovic I just couldn’t see him no matter how I tried.
Tough on Samu and Noah to be pulled off.
Leao for Jovic and move Okafor to striker would have been my call

  12. FFS! They’ve ruined football. This is the worst angle ever to show football on tv. Probably a f*ng 15-year-old gamer calling the shots now in Serie A and demanded video game angles.

Where can we file complaints? This is f*ng disgusting!

    1. Maybe you had a normal viewing angle but the broadcast I watched had an awful video game viewing angle the whole 90 minutes. Lucky you if you had it normal.

  13. This is what is frustrating about our possession game. We are absolutely more talented but if the players are not drilled during practice on movement between the lines, teams can run a low block and we will never have a chance. Everyone will be standing around like this game. Hopefully something changes here

      1. The subs, the starting lineup(with international break coming up), the mass rotation (no lessons learnt from last season), how they play, how they move, Risking Hernandez suspension while you have both, diminishing players even before they got a chance, dumpening player morale………. man I mean a whole lot

      1. We need sensible objective submissions in the comments section. People like you are those turning this page to a sh!*y banter zone all the time . Probably don’t even know the colours of AC Milan. Disgusting!

  14. Alberto Gilardino is schooling Pioli. Although it doesn’t always work like 1 + 1, but consider that Gilardino was coaching the youth team. He gets promoted and his team already has an identity.

Pioli in his typical panic mode has removed a midfielder (Adli) and replaced him with Giroud. Please, what formation is Milan playing? Genoa has more ball possession.

  15. going by the quality of player on both sides and play, honestly Gilardino and Genoa deserve better than Pioli and milan! i will wait till the end of the season before i conclude my verdict on this fake manager of a man

  16. What a wild ending. Giroud the hero and he didn’t even score. The ref doesn’t allow leao on that last min counter attack which would have a been a sure goal.

  17. That was absolutely nerve wrecking towards the end of the match.
We got the win though so at least we have some satisfaction but damn that was far too close.
