Official: Man City vs. AC Milan starting XIs – Fonseca fields Florenzi in midfield

By Isak Möller -

Paulo Fonseca has named his starting eleven for the game against Man City at midnight, as confirmed by AC Milan, and there are quite a few changes compared to the friendly against Rapid Wien. Interestingly, Alessandro Florenzi has been given the chance in midfield again.

This will be Fonseca’s second game in charge of the team and after seeing several players in the first one, he had a pretty good idea when picking the starting XI. Lorenzo Torriano starts instead of Marco Sportiello in goal, while Davde Calabria, Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia and Filippo Terracciano complete the defence.

In midfield, Ismael Bennacer and Alessandro Florenzi get the nod after impressing against Rapid Wien, with Fonseca hoping to keep control of possession tonight. Up front, Samuel Chukwueze keeps his spot on the right, playing alongside Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Alexis Saelemaekers.

Luka Jovic has only been training with the team for a few days and as such, Lorenzo Colombo completes the XI despite being close to a move.

Official Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Torriani; Calabria, Tomori, Gabbia, Terracciano; Bennacer, Florenzi; Chukwueze, Loftus-Cheek, Saelemaekers; Colombo.

Subs: Nava, Raveyre, Kalulu, Pulisic, Jovic, Jimenez, Maldini, Thiaw, Liberali, Musah, Nasti, Cuenca, Bakoune, Adli, Pobega.

Note from Milan: Sportiello is not available because he accidentally suffered trauma to his left hand this morning at the hotel.

Official Man City XI: Ederson; Lewis, Doyle, Simpson-Pusey, Perrone, Bobb, O’Reilly, Susoho, McAtee, Grealish, Haaland.

Subs: Ortega Moreno, Carson, Phillips, Kovacic, Gvardiol, Wright, Katongo, Ndala, Galvez, Oboavwoduo, Mbete, Heskey, Fatah, Mfuni, Hamilton, Samuel, Knight, Wilson-Esbrand.

  1. Playing Florenzi in double pivot over Adli or Pobega it’s all you need to know what Fonseca thinks of Adli and Pobega.

      1. Just looking out for certain things , some changes in how we play and all that. If it’s about the opponent, then this City team is an academy side.

One thing I noticed though is the way we build up. Nice from Fonseca but it clearly still needs lots lots lots of work

  2. Florenzi seriously injured. Right knee. I’m at the stadium and saw him leaving from up close; he looked devastated. I’m afraid it’s something bad.

    1. Yep. Looks bad.
See, even with Florenzi out we still wouldn’t need Royal. But I’m afraid the Management would use this now as a reason

      1. My thoughts exactly. I told my son who was at the game with me, “darn, now we will really buy that bum Royal!”

    1. Again, I had the same thought. I like Florenzi, find him better than Calabria, and I don’t want him to be sold. If his injury is serious, he probably won’t be sold this window.

  3. I would say fonseca has done quite remarkably with only the little time he has spent with the team. You can clearly see his footprint been imposed on the team. Watching the first half has made me realise that there are coaches and there are tacticians. Fonseca is a tactician and believe me over time with these playing pattern I have seen, he will definitely improve the team. You can see the players clearly playing with confidence you can expect from teams that a play exceptional football. I’m impressed.

    1. The build up play is one thing I’ve noticed. Clearly is a work in progress, but looks risky how the players are executing it atm.
      Clearly Fonseca is working

        1. Looking at the pitch from the box 18 line and throwing line it look too small like formal arsenal stadium and the central of the pitch seem crowded

  4. Awesome win! 3-2… Nasti with the winner. There is a lot of promise with this team. And reinforcements will just be better.
