Official: Mariani will officiate Inter vs. Milan – why the designation is special

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan will face Inter in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final on Tuesday and the referee for the game has now been announced. It will be Maurizio Mariani, who also officiated the first leg between the sides.

The first leg ended 0-0 and since Milan were the home side then, they can advance to the final with a draw on Tuesday as long as they score at least one goal (away goal rule). It’s certainly an advantage for the Rossoneri.

As highlighted by Calciomercato.com, Maurizio Mariani will be the referee and that is special since he officiated the first leg as well. That has never happened in the competition before, as AIA always have made sure to have switch referees.

Mariani has been in charge of 14 Milan games and the Rossoneri have a record of 8 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses with the referee. They will be looking to add another win to that tally, or perhaps a draw.
