Official: Maresca will officiate Atalanta clash – the precedents with Milan

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan will take on Atalanta this Sunday evening and it has now been confirmed by Serie A that Fabio Maresca will officiate the game. The Rossoneri have both good and bad memories with the 41-year-old.

Stefano Pioli’s men will be looking to build on the 4-2 win against Udinese in the opening round with another win on Sunday. It will be a tougher game, though, as also has been reflected in the choice of referee.

Maresca is an experienced referee and he will be in charge of the game, with the even more experienced Paolo Valeri in charge of VAR. As highlighted by SempreMilan.it, Maresca has officiated 11 Milan games: 6 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats. He has also officiated 14 Atalanta games: 9 wins, 3 draws and two defeats.

We can all remember the game between Milan and Parma when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off for telling the Maresca “It seems strange” (sembra strano) which the latter misheard as “You are a bastard” (Sei un bastardo). And in the game away at Roma last season, the Swede was carded for his celebration, despite racist chants from the stands.
