Official: Sandro Tonali handed 10-month ban after betting involvement

Sandro Tonali will not play another game for Newcastle United this season after his 10-month ban was approved by FIFA.

As James Horncastle writes for The Athletic, FIFA have ratified the 10-month ban on playing football after the Italian Football Federation put it forward initially.

The 23-year-old midfielder told prosecutors that he had used illegal betting platforms and that he had also placed bets on Milan games while he was playing for the Rossoneri.

He and his legal team submitted a plea bargain to try and get a more lenient sentence, but the FIGC imposed a 10-month suspension from football playing football which FIFA have now rubber stamped.

Tonali will also have a further eight months of rehabilitative work and 16 public appearances related to the ban during which he will educate people regarding the dangers of betting and addiction.

The former Brescia man will be out until August 2024, this confirming his absence from Euro 2024 should Italy qualify.
