Ordine urges Milan to at least consider sacking Fonseca: “Revolutionary scenario”

AC Milan registered their first defeat of the season last night as Parma were the better team at Ennio Tardini. With just one point from two games, the pundit Franco Ordine has now urged the Rossoneri to really think about Paulo Fonseca’s position.

While the opening game against Torino was poor, yesterday’s performance was even worse and Milan truly deserved to lose the game. The stars of the team failed to deliver and Fonseca got the tactics all wrong, with not even the substitutions helping.

In his post-match editorial for Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews24), Franco Ordine didn’t hold back and even urged Milan to really think about Fonseca’s future on the bench. If he isn’t the right back, then it would be better to rip off the bandaid now as he put it.

“Two symbolic images highlight Milan’s collapse against Parma. The first: Ibra spotted in the stands with his eyes closed and his hands on his face, already desperate. The second: Paulo Fonseca standing by the bench with his hands on his hip, helpless and incapable of straightening the navigation of his Milan that immediately ended up in trouble.

“Never has the start to the season been so poor, last close precedent was in 2011. The mercato, on paper, cannot be as miserable as the first two results certify. So it is to Fonseca that we must turn to ask for not vague words, not vague explanations, but convincing answers.

“Yesterday’s defeat was, first and foremost, well deserved. And it is the result of a failed strategic plan. Conceding a goal on the first counterattack, after less than 2 minutes, is a huge signal of reduced concentration and attention but also of a suicidal tactical disposition.

“And so it was throughout the first half when Parma shot in front of Maignan once, twice, three, four times. It is best to immediately take note of reality and take cover. How? Either Ibra and the Rossoneri management are convinced they have made the right choice in choosing the Portuguese as Pioli’s successor, or it is best to prepare for an equally revolutionary scenario, namely a change of technical leadership,” he wrote.

A sacking is very unlikely, of course, but it goes to show just how poor the start of the season has been for Milan. A big change will be needed to get anything from the game against Lazio at the Olimpico, otherwise the international break will be very tough.

      1. since they didn’t want him? that the actual measurement here?

so Pep is way less informed than you… maybe send a CV to the board, you might get Moncada’s job..

        1. you dont answer the question

whole summer you all bigges him up and was like “quick get him before a big club comes”

          what happened?

  1. Sacking after 2 games would be ridiculous.
But honestly, at this point I don’t see Fonseca getting past october-december.
    And the derby….

  2. Fonsesca is not a good coach, simple! Sacking Pioli and bringing Fonsesca is a downgrade. Pioli with all these good signings will deliver scudetto. Sack Fonsesca!!!

  3. Honestly I have lost total respect for Italian Journalists and Pundits, they are never objective and practical with their judgement, yes Fonseca has not made the team yet into a fighting machine, and has made one or two mistakes, but to sack him because of yesterday is pure insanity, why did he not call for the sacking of Conte at Napoli, who had an awful preseason, was beaten by a series b club in the Coppa, lost by 3 goals to Verona, who insulted both Napoli, it’s management and the players.
What Milan needs to do is keep working, use both RLC and Fofana in the double midfield role, get either Adli or Reinjders in the attacking midfield role, because of their creativity and place Pulisic and Leao on the wings, and start Jovic in the striking role, then we should use Gabbia or Thiaw with Pavlovic , or even switch to a back 3 with them, the team will be more solid

    1. Maybe this Journalist went overboard but he makes more then a point here, how can a prepared , well set-out and organized team concede in the second minute?

It doesn’t matter only on the line-up,it’s the system (or lack of it) that is making Milan so leaky, and Fonseca is at fault here if he really studied last season’s team that leaked goals at the rate of a bottom placed team.
He was supposed to be working on the defensive phase but in fact he made the team even more unbalanced then Pioli , when for Torino he played a 4-2-4 of sorts and barely got away with it.
Worryingly, after a week at Milanallo and a more balanced line up we concede in the second minute and had it not been for Pavlovic we would have conceded more , to a newly promoted club. There is no organized framework that is heavy on closing out the space for the opposition and until this happens it doesn’t matter who starts or doesn’t, as goals will be conceded.

After Pioli’s last two seasons we needed an Italian coach who could start from the basics of Italian football which is defense and how to be set out on the pitch when without the ball. This didn’t happen instead they got Fonseca who is going to make the same mistakes Pioli did if he even will be able to have the players with him , as Pioli did, in a months time.

  4. Sack or not, the coach is not good, honest opinion, firstly come 8 years and expenditure he would never win the league, he is best at dropping points, he showed it in Roma and he would do it again here

  5. Ridiculous.

I am not the fan of appointing Fonseca, but give this guy the time. However, Fonseca himself has to turn this around QUICK, because the next 3 games are Lazio, Venezia and Inter. If we lost 2 out of those 3, then it’s going to be a very difficult task defending him afterwards. Luckily, there are 2 weeks break in between Lazio and Venezia’s game, which should buy him enough time to get his ideas across.

    1. If we lose to lazio and venezia but defeat inter, then he stays.

If we win against both lazio and venezia, but we lose to inter, he should go.

      Never been that simple.

    1. You can bring very good and talented players with 10-20 millions each… with one condition : to have a very very good scouting department

  6. we blame the coach for an individual problem even when it is general.
our players are suffering from win mentality disorder simply they don’t know how to win.

infuse liberalli in 10 chuku on Lw and pulisic on Rw leao on bench.

would have love to see theo on bench but no replacement.

tomori on bench but gabbia and pavlovic will be too slow.

now you will only figure out. our team is trash and filled with trash bags called pro players and we pay them every week for being trash and playing trash football

  7. But the question is with who?

Elliot /Redbird have had long enough and to me personally it’s all to obvious what there game is just take a good luck at this squad and its coaching staff.

Now that said let’s see how this plays out further down the line however in my own opinion I think I know the script and the ending.

  8. First of all we should fire these who bring him and vouched for him ,starting from furlani and ibra ,there you got ur 2 mil/per year coach

  9. Fonseca was Not my Favorite but I think Milan Must wait for the next 4 Games! Fonseca could be the Victim of the Management and his average Players!

Usman Yussuf is here the good european with deep respect for our Culture

    1. It is a shame to Play with Players which Are Not good enough for Chelsea! Fonseca is a nice Person but he is a victim! Morata is a real european Champion who Reminds me on old and better times! Morata: good Choice!

Yussuf is Not frienfly to italian experts! Can the Boy from all over the world explain where the experts of his Country Are?

  10. There were a few of us on this website who drew attention from the moment Fonseca appeared in the discussion for the role of coach, that he is not the right man for a club like Milan, that he has not performed almost anywhere where he has coached, it was more a total failure his time in Rome which was from the start a major red flag. Many fans of the team and characters around the club, former footballers drew attention that Fonseca should not be brought , but the club managers, the embarrassing trio Furlani-Moncada-Ibra, were deaf to all the warnings.

  11. we need to give fonseca time if he wins against inter he stays drawa to lazio or venezia and in the worst case lose and then dont grab a victory then sack him

  12. The problem is not only Fonsesca, Furlani, Mocanda and Gerry are way overwhelmed. Everyone was screaming bring Motta to Milan or at least De Zerbi, they got us Fonseca who might not be a bad coach but I don’t think is the right coach for us, our fullbacks playing right to the strikers leaving the centre backs exposed… how is this helping our bad defence? They spend 70-75 mil already this summer, is this team improved? Pavlo is good, Foffana still needs to be seen we missed 2 good players Samardic and Bellanova who I believe is better than Calabria and Royal, and they refused to pay 20 mil for Samardic considering that we don’t have an attacking midfielder yet they got no problem paying 20 mil for Musah who is not even a backup player.

  13. i agree 100% with you i want motta as well signing cheap we should have sold musah and buy samardic royal is a useless signing he was like 15 million but should have bought someone else

    1. Royal was 15 mil Bellanova was around 20 mil maybe we could have get him for 10 including a player, I hope Royal will improve and do well this season even though I doubt it.

  14. The problem is firing Fonseca would be admitting Furlani, Ibra and Moncada were dead wrong – and with the egos on theose 3 – I don’t see that happening – unless we get to the derby winless and Inter smashes us again.

It’s not surprising – we did hire Fonseca – hardly a top level coach or a hot up and coming one (Motta). He is what he is – a mediocre mid-level coach. You get what you pay for as they say.

Assuming we do not buy any more players – Fonseca should switch formations to a 4-3-3 to have any chance at saving the season. We don’t have pure DM to play the double pivot positions (esp since we want to sell Benny) and we have no pure CAM (Pulisic is a RW and RLC is a #8 – and so are Reindjers, and Musah – all #8’s. Even Fofana is more of an 8 but I think he can play the 6). So put Fofana in the middle with RLC on one side and Reindjers the other. See what happens.

The team is poorly constructed. Lots of $$ tied up in backup level players. No balance. But I’m not surprised. Redbird are focused on the Futuro – not the first team. We are stock piling young cheap talent to resell for profit in the future. That is the focus. That is the Redbird way. Moneyball.

  15. we could’ve had motta or de zerbi. red bird is a joke and so is the rest of management. how hard is it to make the right decision?
