GdS: Origi left with 11 games to convince Milan as all his alibis run out

By Oliver Fisher -

Divock Origi has now moved past the period of getting the benefit of the doubt after arriving with an injury and contributions are expected soon, a report claims.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Origi is looking at the calendar with a bit of concern as there are 11 games left and then it will be time for the management to take stock of who deserves a place in the team for next season.

The Belgian knows he hasn’t convinced yet having scored just a couple of goals and having only had sporadic flashes of what he can do. Meanwhile, Olivier Giroud is about to sign a renewal and starts every big game aged 36 and even Zlatan Ibrahimovic is ahead of him in the pecking order at the age of 41.

Origi has a deal with Milan until 2026 at €4m net per season and while Stefano Pioli has always defended him with alibis such as injuries and adaptation to a new league, the management expected more from him.

In 2019 the striker scored three goals in the semi-final and final of the Champions League, yet this year he only scored against Monza and Sassuolo in games where the scoreline was far from tight.

The former Liverpool man has played around 700 minutes and has not started a game since the win against Monza in mid-January, where he was one of the worst on the pitch. Against Tottenham he hit the post in the second leg when he should have scored, and now Origi has been left with 11 games to convince.

  1. Belotti scored double digit goals for more than 4 seasons and only slowed down due to injury but yet Milan signed an injury prone benchwarmer who hasn’t scored double digit goals since God knows when yet they chose Origi over Belotti? You make this up.

Another Bad decision by Milan management. Sell Origi this summer and put the money towards buying a striker than can score double digit goals per season.

  2. 90% of our squad has 11 games to convince that they deserve to be on the team next season, not just Origi
For me, only Maignan, Kalulu, Theo and Giroud(as a back up) are safe, the rest need to prove it, especially the over the 30 mil signings like CDK and Tomori and the 7.5+ mil salary man Leao

          1. The only reason why Leao is “underpaid” is because he refuses to sign a contract that would more than quadruple his current salary.
Keep feeling sorry for him and make him seem like he is the victim.
Money that BTW based on his performance over the entirety of the 4 years he has been at Milan he doesn’t deserve, because for the majority of the time he has been poor, not just the last 3 months

  3. Seems odd considering there are 3 Ita teams in the CL qtrs.

I’d rather play “slow and dull” and actually win championships, then “fast and furious” and lose like PSG.
