GdS: Origi and Lukaku to continue their Belgian duel with San Siro the new stage

By Oliver Fisher -

The derby between AC Milan and Inter next season will have a Belgian sub-plot to it with Divock Origi and Romelu Lukaku facing off again.

La Gazzetta dello Sport talks about the derby that began in England and is now continuing ‘in the shadow of the Madonnina’, with Origi having signed a four-year deal with the Rossoneri and Lukaku having returned on loan.

There is a difference in that the latter is certain to play the first derby, scheduled for Saturday 3 September, while Origi will have to earn the starting spot from who scored a match-winning brace in the last league derby that proved to be a Scudetto turning point.

Divock and Romelu are preparing to revive the Merseyside derby they experience during their time in England, the one between Liverpool and Everton. Origi and Lukaku met three times in that game between 2016 and 2017, and Divock won all three scoring two goals, while Romelu remained dry.

Their paths crossed again in 2019 when Lukaku was at United, but that finished zero to zero. Origi, therefore, is undefeated against Lukaku and while it might be true that the Nerazzurri’s new recruit showed more propensity for goals in his career, Origi has scored three goals in the semi-finals and the final of the Champions League.

The two shared a dressing room in the national team with Lukaku (102 appearances and 68 goals) bettering the numbers of Origi (32 appearances and 3 goals). However, Lukaku has 4 honours to Origi’s 6, so it will be a fascinating continuation of a duel with San Siro as the stage.
