Pellegatti suggests Maignan replacement and explains why Fonseca ‘won’t be a disaster’

By Oliver Fisher -

Carlo Pellegatti believes that the appointment of Paulo Fonseca as the new head coach of AC Milan will not be a ‘disaster’, while he also suggested a potential replacement for Mike Maignan.

Pellegatti spoke during an interview for Radio Rossonera and he was asked about the potential replacement for Maignan given the rumours that are circulating suggesting that he could be sold for the right price.

“If Maignan were to leave I would immediately go to Caprile. Di Gregorio. He did very well at Bari last year. I’m not going to get Diogo Costa… again with a Portuguese player, with all the negotiation problems involved, at 45 million euros. There is a good goalkeeping school now in Italy.”

The journalist was questioned on the choices that the management might make with regards to the attacking department, amid the speculation that Serhou Guirassy is now a target the club are negotiating over.

“For a team that has a fairly consolidated attack, but the defence was a disaster. At a defensive level, Fonseca worked quite well in France.

“It must be said that this is a courageous choice, because if they had chosen Conte they would have been fine all year. A choice that causes discussion, divides more than unites. But if things go wrong, the fans don’t get angry with Fonseca.

“Now, however, what matters is not when they will announce it, but the players who will play for him. If you show up next year with Guirassy and Jovic we’ll struggle a bit. Milan have been working on Zirkzee, if they don’t sign him it’s clear there would be some disappointment.

“On Guirassy at 28 there may be the famous Piatek effect which is worrying. The German league is what it is, like Spain. Three top teams playing against much less popular teams. I would take Guirassy tomorrow, but to complete the attack and then I would go to the first name.”

Pellegatti went on to talk about some of the hierarchical confusion that is perceived to exist at Milan, with several members of the management each having their own ideas about how best to move forward.

“One of the issues is to clarify the positions well. They told us that Moncada and Ibra take care of the technical side, Furlani takes care of the administrative part and then Cardinale does the synthesis. It’s a different supply chain from the ones we’re used to, let’s hope it gives us results.

“Do they want to build a stadium and then resell? Even when Elliott arrived it was said that they weren’t interested in anything, but we have undoubtedly made a step forward. Is that enough for us? No, especially because Inter were in front of us this year.

“As for the coach, I hope that they have chosen the best in the world and that we will be first in November. But to be so, you have to help him with the transfer campaign.

“The new coach is as important as the renewal of Lautaro for Oaktree… he makes the intentions clear. I still delude myself that they don’t hire coaches and players just to get to the top four.

“As a coach, I believe that Fonseca gives more guarantees [than Van Bommel]. If we’re talking about gambling, didn’t it help Arsenal when they got Guardiola’s deputy? Why not have the intuition to go for Klopp’s deputy?

“Now he has gone to Salzburg, in a year or two we will certainly see him at Leipzig. Fonseca is a good coach, it won’t be a disaster. It’s clear that if you go for Klopp’s deputy it could be the signing of your life or the mistake that makes you start everything from scratch.”

    1. Its only rumors at this point of time, no confirmation on transfermarkt or by juve or monza from what ive seen. In fact he is also currently injured for the time being.

      1. Yes matter of time. Conte meanwhile almost certain for Napoli. What filters as wel is that Fonseca will only ask for a RB and he thinks the team is competitive as it is. All the pretenders for Serie A have moved in the market a long time ago – meanwhile Milan sleepin as always. It means first of all no ambition showed with the coach , it’s what most certainly will happen with the Mercato.

        1. yes according to rumors and he might end up there in the end but until it actually materializes its nothing but hearsay, Glad if conte ends up somewhere else than in ac milan even if im not 100% convinced by fonseca either that story is also just rumors for now.
Nah i think its a bit too pesimistic but time will tell.

  1. Piatek is look down on because of how his career turned up, but he wasn’t a bust at Milan.
He only played 12 months at Milan, 1 year, divided in 2 seasons. In 41 games played he scored 16 goals, which means he scored a goal every 2.5 games.
Giroud, for comparison, has played 131 games for Milan across all competitions and scored a total of 48 goals. A goal every 2.7 games.
Keep in mind the time when Piatek played for Milan. He played under 3 different coaches in 12 months, while Giroud played during more stable Milan and under only 1 coach.
I’m not saying Piatek is better than Giroud, but I don’t get why he is considered a bust at Milan. He has better goal per game ratio than Giroud.
Neither Piatek nor Paqueta were bad signings, they were just at Milan at the wrong time under the wrong coaches. Especially Paqueta.
The comparison with Guirassy, a 1 year wonder, isn’t equal. Piatek was scoring in serie A for Genoa before Milan bought him, while Guirassy is doing that in the Bundesliga. How many strikers that did well in Bundesliga replicated that in better leagues? Even Lewandowski couldn’t replicate his Bundesliga output where he was scoring 30, 40 goals a season. In Spain he can barely score 20 in the league.
Piatek was 23, while Guirassy is 28. They are the same age today.

  2. “Fonseca won’t be a disaster” – agreed. But that is not the point. AND have we set the bar and our standards so LOW that all we are hoping is that he isn’t a disaster??? Should we not expect more as AC Milan? Last I checked we weren’t Fiorentina.

Fonseca sure will be ok – top 4 is possible – we still have talent. BUT is that all we want is top 4???

The answer is unfortunately YES. Redbird want to be PROFITABLE first and foremost. Top 4 each year is the goal – NOT TITLES. CONSISTENTLY challenging for Titles cost $$ – and that is not something Redbird are willing to do – spend $$$ to compete with Europes best – or Italy for that matter. 35M yearly NET transfer spend won’t get you there. Dreams of Zirkzee, Sesko are just DREAMS. Lucky if we get Guirassy. We are

    Moneyball gents moneyball.

So then Fonseca is the perfect coach for our cheap owners. Reasonable salary (3.5M); won’t demand transfer spend; easy to get along with and won’t speak out against management or ownership; will win some games but never elite – sound familiar Mr Pioli??

    Thx Gerry. Thx

    1. Facts get in the way of the bs you always post. Management spent more €100+ million last season and put down more than €20 million for land, and the net spend argument is a nonstarter. The club have just come out of debt and you’re complaining because the new owners are being responsible? Had they spent €200+ million, you’d still complain. People like you are a cancer.

Had Tonali’s contract ran down and he left on a free, you would have complained, just as the others complained when stars left for nothing under Elliot.

You also don’t seem to understand how businesses turn a profit. They turn a profit by being successful, by raising the profile of their brand, that doesn’t happen by being content with a top 4 finish.

How embarrassing it must be for you that the new ownders to have a better understanding of the club than you, despite the fact they’ve been in charge for 5 minutes.

      1. OK but then we’re linked with 20 different coaches but management goes and picks the very worst one??? How is that conducive of “being successful and rising the profile of the brand”??? Have you realized that they are replacing the guy who placed second in the second best European league, with the guy who placed fourth in the fifth best European league??? (Check the UEFA coefficient for 5 years – Serie A is second, League 1 is fifth). Have you realized that this guy coached for 2 seasons in Serie A and couldn’t get better than fifth??? Meanwhile Pioli won the league once and placed second twice.

Fonseca is a mediocre Joe Nobody.

So management replaces a coach with a WORSE one and you say they are seeking success? What success? How do they plan to be successful by picking a mediocre LOSER when several great coaches were available???

Fonseca is the idiot who just said that Milan only needs a RB otherwise we’re fine! Uh what??? Oh, we’re all set at ST because we have… Jovic and Origi! Oh, we don’t need a DM. Oh, we don’t need to replace Theo and Rafa who are likely to leave! Sure, Fonseca the imbecile; we just need a RB!

This is how bad this guy is. He was picked because he is a yes-man who won’t protest when we sell our star players, and won’t request expensive signings.

No, we are NOT on a path of success.

Meanwhile Juve instead of looking at 20 different coaches, focused on a great one, Motta, and quietly pounced, securing his services. THAT’S a path of success. THAT’S rising the profile of the brand!

      2. LOL. And there he is….another @Pioli lol.

Sorry kid but you obviously didn’t read my post correctly, which based on your response, isn’t that surprising.

I said NET spend kid. Educate yourself on what that means. AND yes NET spend DOES matter. Cycling the same $$ without ADDING doesn’t work to win titles. Ask all the big clubs if that is what they do – sell star player each year to fund their transfer campaign and expect to win titles. They ADD to the core. The FACT is why we went from a semi final UFL team to one that didn’t even qualify for the knock out stages. That is a failure if you are a true fan.

20M for land? Sure. Has the stadium been approved yet? have they started breaking ground? No? Call me when they do donkey. Many other clubs in Italy have gone through the same process as we are now and nothing has happened so I wouldn’t count your chickens before they are hatched so to speak if you know anything about Italian politics.

“ You also don’t seem to understand how businesses turn a profit. They turn a profit by being successful, by raising the profile of their brand, that doesn’t happen by being content with a top 4 finish.”

        – LOL. No kid, it is you that doesn’t understand business. You CAN turn a profit by being content with a top 4 finish or worse. Depends on how you define success. Just Ask Atalanta. They have been doing it for many many years. Make 30M a year on average in profit – and the owners are happy. Look it up donkey. They don’t care if they win a title as evidenced by the many times in the past they have come close, even a UCL semi -finals appearance, and what happened the following year? Ownership sold players LOL. So again you have no clue what you are talking about kid.

We weren’t “in debt” last year and are not this year. So not sure what you are talking about and nobody ever advocated to spend 200M, certainly not me. But do I think we should spend more than 35M/season IF we are serious about winning titles? Absolutely yes.

So get your facts straight kid. The only “cancer” is a person like yourself who is more in love with the owners of the club instead of the club itself. Owners come and go kid. The cub and it’s fans are forever. If you were one you would understand that. Cheers.

    2. Yea I was wondering if he really said that the new hire won’t be a disaster lol wtf 😂. Went from guaranteed top 4 to meh at least we won’t be super trash 🤣🤣🤣
