Pellegatti: Omobamidele a name on Milan’s centre-back wish list

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are looking for a centre-back to try and complete the department after Matteo Gabbia’s exit, and Andrew Omobamidele has been linked by another source.

With Fikayo Tomori, Malick Thiaw, Pierre Kalulu and Simon Kjaer as the current options in the middle of the defence, the management are pursuing a player who can replace Gabbia and perhaps offer more physical guarantees than Kjaer.

Carlo Pellegatti spoke during a video on his YouTube channel (via PianetaMilan) about Milan’s hunt for a central defender and he mentioned the name of Omobamidele, who plays for Norwich City and has an Irish passport.

According to Pellegatti, the Rossoneri could sign him either during the current summer mercato or wait until the January window opens, with the Championship side asking for around €15m to sell at present.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport reported, negotiation could still be difficult given Norwich will try to mount a promotion push and do not want to lose such a talented young defender.

    1. Check Thiaw last game for Schalke. They lost 6-1.
Milan lost 1-6 to Juventus at home with Baresi and Maldini in the line up.
You can’t judge a player based on 1 game, or based on the way the defense plays as a collective

    2. Omobamidele did not play in the Southampton game …. likely he will be sold to Premier League Bournemouth for fee closer to 20 Million in coming weeks .

    1. He wont be 5th choice kjaer is… He will be 3rd choice if Kalulu take the RB spot and maybe in starting 11 if tomori and thiaw keep showing inconsistent week to week

      1. I’ll be honest here, I’ve never seen the guy play. But if you and Usain did and thought that he could be third or even second choice, honestly this raises even more questions.

Are you guys saying that a guy who is currently playing in Championship would WALK STRAIGHT into Milan’s backline as starters? Okay, let’s give the guy the benefit of the doubt, supposedly that he is that good. Why there are no interests from a more established EPL teams? And if Milan’s situation is THAT dire, (I know Tomori isn’t hitting the same performance as the scudetto runs), why aren’t we going for a FIRST CHOICE defender instead of a third/second choice ones?

Look, I too have been critical of Tomori for the past season, even Kalulu has been annoyingly below par too. But is this guy that good, that he could right away be slotted into the first team? Bare in mind that he would need to adapt to a new environment, different league, language and culture. Not to mention that even Thiaw would need the right stroke of luck (injuries to Kjaer/Tomori) to be picked by notoriously rigid-in-his-selection Pioli.

I personally don’t follow EPL nor Championship, so I’d be willing to listen to fair assessment from those who do.

        1. Your reasoning is out of place here. The sempremilan-superscouts know all the defenders way better than Moncada and Pioli. 😀

  1. As i wrote yesterday: we will read a lot of rumours, that will stay only that- rumours stories about milan trasnfer mercato in august.
There are difficulties in finding new clubs for players such as: Origi, Caldara, Ballo Toure, who in combined have 10,5 million of gross salary.
It is not small amount cause those 10 million could mean either profit or loss in final financial report.
Only after selling or releasing those three we can expect 1 more arrival.

  2. Doubt it.

WE have a UEFA Registration list requirement. Likely will be an Italian player. I’m not sure who though. Some say go for a younger player, but I think Rafael Toloi, Italian-Brazilian player, might be a good option.

  3. Norwich fan here. I too find the Omobamidele to Milan rumours a bit odd. He’s got great potential, but he’s not a guaranteed starter for us either at the moment. Having said that, he’s probably a better pure CB than Godfrey is, who we sold to Everton for £20m. I wouldn’t imagine he’d go into the Milan first team, but I don’t know much about the state of Italian football or Milan specifically to comment.
