Pioli believes Donnarumma is ‘among the top three’ in the world and that his future is at Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has stressed the important of Gianluigi Donnarumma, labelling him one of the top three goalkeepers in the world.

We reported earlier in the week via our market expert Vito Angele that Donnarumma’s renewal is a formality, and during a meeting between the soon-to-be manager Ralf Rangnick and CEO Ivan Gazidis in December, the German was told that the Rossoneri intend to extend the goalkeeper’s contract.

Paolo Maldini insisted it is the club’s “duty” to try and hold on to such a talented young asset during an interview before the game against Roma, and positive signs have since arrived from the media suggesting that an agreement can be found.

Pioli spoke to the media ahead of Milan’s trip to face SPAL in Ferrera on Wednesday night, and he was asked about the importance of the Rossoneri’s No.99.

“The goalkeeper must always keep the team ready,” Pioli said (via MilanNews).

“I don’t know if he is the best goalkeeper in the world as Maldini said, but he is certainly among the top three. I was a defender and I know what it means to have a goalkeeper behind you that spurs you. He must continue like this.”

On the subject of a renewal Pioli kept his cards close to his chest, but revealed that the player seems happy at the moment and that he sees his future at Milan.

“Renewal? Maldini explained it well. I see him calm and determined, he has an excellent attitude, I see him happy at Milanello and I still see him at Milan.”
