GdS: Pioli expected to make changes in defence and midfield for Salzburg game

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli is already thinking ahead to the changes that he will make for Wednesday night’s crucial Champions League game against Red Bull Salzburg.

Pioli opted to make multiple changes to his starting line-up compared to the team that beat Dinamo Zagreb in midweek, and it did not pay off in the end as his side were beaten 2-1 by Torino at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

Fikayo Tomori returned from suspension, Tommaso Pobega came into the double pivot to face the team he was on loan at last season while Junior Messias, Brahim Diaz and Divock Origi came into the attack.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), Pioli will make some line-up changes compared to yesterday’s match in Turin starting in the defence as Simon Kjaer should come back in, while Sergino Dest could play at right-back.

In midfield, Ismael Bennacer will return, who will be paired with Sandro Tonali, while there are still question marks at the moment regarding the composition of the attacking department.

  1. I’ve said it in the past, Milan did not prepare themselves (summer mercato) to handle both Champions League and Serie A. It was more than obvious that Pioli was keeping players fresh for CL match. Check and see past season the games we lost points were in between CL games.
There isn’t enough quality to backup injuries and rest players.
I’m sorry guys but we cannot go forward with players like Gabbia, Pobega.
Pobega’s reactions were always one click slower than the Torino players, that explains the many fouls he gave to Torino.
The defence was terrible. We last almost all balls in our area . The 1st goal came from a player who headed the ball without jumping!! It’s insane! Also we do not have a backup for Maignan, 2nd goal for me it’s a slow reaction from Tatarusanu.
It’s such a pity because this year would’ve been the easiest Scudetto for Milan if Redbird gave Maldini the budget he wanted during the summer.

  2. I totally agree with Thomas , the only thing that I disagree is about Gabbia… I think Gabbia have improved a lot from his last games last season… I know it wasn’t a great game from him, but he made some descent showing in the previous games and I was shocked to see him perform the way he did against Chelsea….
