AC Milan will be hoping for another big derby performance from Olivier Giroud on Wednesday night when they take on Inter in the Supercoppa Italiana.
La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) recalls how nearly one month ago, on December 18, 2022, Giroud woke up ready to play in the World Cup final against Argentina hoping to fire France to a second consecutive tournament win.
On 18 January this year, he will wake up in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia which is no more than 500km away from Qatar, for another final. He’s not 100% fit, but Stefano Pioli needs his leaders to start leading and the 36-year-old is no different.
Giroud has all the experience Milan need now having played in two World Cup finals, winning one. He won a Europa League by scoring in the final, he won a Champions League and three FA Cups, being decisive in all finals.
He also loves to score in derbies as the brace in February 2022 and another crucial goal in September 2022 showed. If there is one certainty in Pioli’s Milan it is Giroud, while Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will ask Francesco Acerbi to limit the Frenchman after Stefan de Vrij already failed.
It’s unwise to give too much burden to Giroud. Milan should have “11 attacantes” playing in the game and “11 diffensores”. Football is a teamwork game. All must be together, all have to be creative.
I think Olivier Giroud will deliver on this one ..
Win this game and confidence will come back to the whole team …
