Olivier Giroud will once again lead the line for AC Milan in Sunday night’s game against Napoli at San Siro, and he is hoping to continue his trend of scoring big goals.
As reported this morning by Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews), Sunday evening will be the ninth game out of nine played by Giroud in the early season after having featured in each of the eight games so far in the early campaign across Serie A and the Champions League.
Due to the injuries sustained by Ante Rebic and Divock Origi, as well as the suspension of Rafael Leao, Giroud will start for the seventh consecutive match against Napoli on Sunday and he will be the leader of the attack.
Given that he is 35 years of age and had an injury scare that stopped him starting the 4-2 win over Udinese in round one, it is perhaps not what the coaching staff hoped for, but Giroud wants to play and is as hungry as ever.
It could also be the case that even if Pioli had all of his forwards at his disposal on Sunday he would still choose Giroud for Sunday’s big match, because he already has four goals this season including one in the derby against Inter and the winner against Sampdoria last weekend.
In addition, he continues to maintain an excellent record on penalties as in his career he has scored 24 out of 25. Giroud has scored 14 goals in 31 games from January onwards so 2022 appears to be his year, and of these goals one was against Roma, two against Inter, one against Napoli, one against Lazio and two against Sassuolo to win the league.
All were big goals goals, and for this reason Pioli can rest easy knowing that Giroud is charged up and ready to go in the final game before the break.
