Pioli insists Milan ‘must believe’ in Scudetto push and shares cigar anecdote

By Oliver Fisher -

Stefano Pioli has urged his team to believe that they can go on and win the Scudetto even though they resume the season eight points behind Napoli.

The Milan boss has rightly received a lot of praise for the way that he has engineered a resurgence at the club along with the help of some other key leaders, but it will be a tough task to overhaul the gap to Napoli that has opened up.

Pioli spoke during an interview with SportMediaset as part of a special called ‘The kings of football’. The complete version of the exclusive interview will be broadcast on Thursday 29 December on Italia Uno, but a snippet has been released.

“Milan must believe in a comeback against Napoli just as last year they believed in a Scudetto which initially seemed impossible,” he said (via PianetaMilan).

On his evolution as a coach : “I think I’ve improved in many things and in many situations, but above all in the two-three things that I consider to be the most important for my job: the different tactical solutions, the relationship with my players and maybe even a better communication with those outside than I could have at the beginning of my career.”

Pioli also provided an anecdote regarding a special moment he shared with his son Gianmarco, who works as an analyst, on the night of the Scudetto win.

“At 2 in the morning we smoked a big cigar on the balcony with all the Milan fans passing by with flags, at that moment I really understood the greatness of what we had done,” he said.
