Pioli says Milan were ‘not up to par’ and admits distance to Napoli is ‘a lot’

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan were held to a disappointing draw at Cremonese this evening and Stefano Pioli certainly has a lot to think about. The manager, speaking to the media afterwards, was understandably frustrated with the result.

Pioli’s men struggled to create chances this evening and as a result, Cremonese were able to sit back and defend for most of the game. 27-73 in possession says a lot about the clash, an advantage that the Rossoneri really should have capitalised on.

Speaking to DAZN, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli admitted that it simply wasn’t good enough from the Rossoneri this evening. He did, however, refrain from criticising individual performances as it was more of a collective breakdown.

On the game…

“I think we could have done more. It was a discreet first half and in the second half, we were not up to par. We weren’t able to create a volume of play and situations to create more chances. Cremonese left little space but we could have done more.”

On the substitutes…

“I think that we lost speed in the second half and created a lot of duels. If you can’t get past the opponent it becomes difficult to create chances. We missed the play, the flicker, the movement. We had to move better without the ball, we struggled to find more solutions.”

On Leao’s display…

“I think it’s wrong to focus on the individuals. We win as a team, then we cannot point the finger at the individuals after such a poor collective performance.”

On Cremonese…

“We expected this attitude. We had to move well, with the necessary time and give solutions to the carrier. This failed, even though we had opportunities to score goals.”

On the distance to Napoli points-wise…

“It’s a lot and we don’t like the standings but on Sunday, we have the chance to win again. The season is long with many points available, but we didn’t want this gap. We need to give Napoli a run for their money.”

On De Ketelaere…

“I understand the media effect but let’s forget how much was paid. We can play better, more qualitative and more dangerous football.”

Milan will face Fiorentina on Sunday and it will be the final game ahead of the World Cup break. The Scudetto seems to be drifting away, with Napoli currently eight points ahead, making that clash a crucial one for the Rossoneri.

  1. It’s Pioli who should forget how much was paid for CDK and play Adli or even Krunic instead. The only reason CDK gets chance after chance is that they paid a lot for him. Otherwise, he hasn’t shown anything.

    1. Yep. A few key passes by CDK months ago don’t mean **** today. He has been absolutely horrible lately and doesn’t deserve to go on the pitch while there are others who are bound to do better.

    2. Yup, CdK offered almost nothing in his last few matches. Many compared him with Leao’s first season. In the first season, Leao scored 6 goals, assisted 2. While CdK (with almost 20 matches under his belt) only provided 1 assist.

  2. Ok Mr Pioli. As seems you analyze team performance. How would you fix it? For sure by keep changing players and sine few antics of yours? Results comes frkm key factirs, one of them is consistency of players on pitch beside tactics which you never understood your game but after its finished

  3. Every game we won, every goal we scored, no pre-worked tactics, only individual achievements and luck. Take out Leao, Theo, Giroud, the probability of individual achievement and luck decreases.

As far as Pioli, I see him more in the role of psychologist and not as a coach.

    1. Pre-worked tactics means disciplined players who work as a team for the team. Milan don’t have enough that kind of players. And Leao, Diaz, CDK & Origi are the worst in that aspect.

      1. Yeah, forget quality. We don’t need Leao, Diaz and CDK even though they’re the ones, especially Leao and Diaz, who have won us the most games with individual brilliance this season, apart from maybe Giroud. Let’s, instead, stick with your beloved Rebic who can’t make a 5-yard pass and has a worse touch than Lukaku. I’m sure that will work incredibly well.

  4. Pioli is the reason we draw in this match how can u play 3 man back something your not sure of, making changes at the early stage

  5. Relax guys it will be okay. Its been a tough program they cant play every game like they did against salsburg, it was a fantastic display from the team. If Napoli can continue like this without dropping points they deserve the title.
But I think they will drop points along the way. If not, then as I sad they deserve the scudetto. We will come back stronger in the New year.
