GdS: Pioli has a ‘revolution’ in mind for Inter game – Leao could be left out again

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli is seriously considering starting Rafael Leao on the bench against Inter tonight, according to a report.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pioli has in mind a ‘revolution’ both in tactical terms and in terms of the personnale that he picks. The biggest indiscretion is that he could name a starting line-up that does not include Rafael Leao for the second game in a row.

The Portuguese has struggled a lot lately in terms of form but he is still one of the few men capable of deciding a game, just as he did with his brace in the last league derby between the two sides.

That move would facilitate the shift to a three-man defence, more specifically a 3-5-2 that would see Divock Origi next to Olivier Giroud in attack, Davide Calabria and Theo Hernandez as the wing-back, with Junior Messias, Sandro Tonali and Rade Krunic in the midfield and Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer and Matteo Gabbia in defense.

Calabria could also be part of the three-man defence which would then mean Alexis Saelemaekers as the wing-back. Pioli is having his final tactical reflections before a decision is made.

  1. hope that the three selected defenders can use their hands in the match. because we all know, Tata is not good at using his hands let alone feet…

    🤣🤣🤣

    1. Exactly, everyone is talking about a 3 man midfield or a 3 man defence, but what we really need is a 2 man goalkeeping. Take out a forward and play Mirante and Vasquez together in the goal. Now that would be a revolution.

  2. He should use 5 3 2 many time. And use Theo and Dest on flanks. Especially in the games where we lost 3 0, 5 2 and 4 0.
5 3 2 is good because we have good defenders, and right and left backs are also good. Three in the middle is something that Shinter also do.
And we have better midfielders than attacking midfielder and wingers combined.
Pioli must use best possible players and he can do it only changing formation.
What Pioli did in this season is using same tactics and logic but he got weaker players.
When Kessie and Romagnoli left, and they didnt bring good replacement, formation needed to be changed.
For 4 2 3 1 formation, this Milan squad needs: very good attacking midfielder, what we still dont have, right winger which we dont have for many years now and excellent striker. Also you need at least 5 very good substitute. With players that we already have . So big investments are necessary.
Pioli needs to change Milan game from now, to get different results in next 17 games after Shinter.

  3. I like the change ..I think formation looks good with Origi up front alongside Giroud..
We need a performance tonight from Giroud..
If we win this game then perhaps confidence will flood back into the team ..I believe Origi can supply Oliver with decent crosses..
