Pioli on Sportiello’s abilities in the build-up play: “He knows our principles”

Mike Maignan will not be available for AC Milan’s clash against Hellas Verona tomorrow and this means Marco Sportiello will start. Speaking at the presser, Stefano Pioli expressed confidence in the goalkeeper.

Maignan left the game against Newcastle early due to a minor muscle discomfort and Sportiello took over his duties. The Italian only had to make one save, but nevertheless he did well to keep that effort out.

Tomorrow afternoon, the former Atalanta man will get the chance from start and Pioli was asked about this during his pre-match press conference. In particular, he was asked about how the build-up phase will be affected.

“He knows our positions and game principles very well, he is ready to help us even in the build-up phase. As against Torino, the goalkeeper will probably have more time to set up the play tomorrow too,” he stated.

Maignan is expected to be back for the game against Lazio next week and could perhaps even be back for Cagliari. In any case, it’s not a serious injury for the Frenchman and Milan can breathe a sigh of relief.
