Pioli sends strong message to Milan players over starting spots: “You must be ready”

By Isak Möller -

Despite the many absences at AC Milan, the competition within the squad remains high and that was highlighted by Stefano Pioli during today’s presser. Indeed, there is almost no certain starter in the team.

Although there are usually a few certainties in this team, this number has now been decimated amid the key absences. For the game against Genoa, the XI was quite different and there will be six changes for the clash tomorrow.

In defence, Matteo Gabbia and Pierre Kalulu might not be fighting with anyone currently but they will once Alessio Romagnoli is back. Alessandro Florenzi, on the right, has already received the competition of Davide Calabria who has just returned.

As for the rest of the positions, bar the midfield tandem currently, Pioli has different options and we have seen that lately. As said, the attack for tomorrow’s game will be completely different from the one mid-week.

Speaking about the healthy competition during his presser (read in full here), Pioli made it clear that no player is safe in the starting XI.

“Milan can do without any player. It’s up to the players to maintain the hierarchy. If the performances drop, there is another player ready to take over. If you want to play for Milan and make it as a starter, you must be ready,” he stated.
