Pioli strongly hints at formation Milan will play during ‘difficult’ Salzburg game

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli seems to have confirmed the formation that his team will use in the crucial Champions League clash against Red Bull Salzburg.

Milan face off against the Austrian champions tonight at San Siro with a very simple equation: avoid defeat in order to progress to the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time since the 2013-14 season.

Pioli has opted to make a number of changes to the starting XI with the likes of Simon Kjaer, Ismael Bennacer, Ante Rebic, Rade Krunic and Olivier Giroud coming into the side after the defeat at Torino last Sunday, raising questions about whether it will be a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1.

The Milan coach spoke to Prime Video before the game to discuss the magnitude of the occasion and also his team selection, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

On the match: “We feel good. We want to go through. It will be a difficult match, but we have the qualities to do well. It is a match that weighs a lot, but I’m sure we will play other equally important games in the future. We want to win the match, a careful game will be needed. We have what it takes to do well.”

On the growth of Milan: “It is an important step, we would like to show the growth of this team also in Europe. We have to show the best possible performance.”

On Krunic being a starter: “We play with 3 midfielders and 3 forwards. The team is balanced in this way, we can do well both with the ball and without the ball.”
