AC Milan prevailed over Lazio in one of the decisive duels in the race for Champions League football. It was a balanced match for most of the 96 minutes but Franck Kessie’s penalty made the difference and helped Gennaro Gattuso’s men earn very important three points for the Serie A standings.
Reina (7.5): Faultless, calm and very assuring. A near perfect goalkeeping performance from Reina. He saved Immobile’s big chance at the beginning of the match and had no problem with the rest of Lazio’s shots throughout the game. His fast throws to start counter-attacks were an added value for the Rossoneri
Calabria (7): Defensively a secure performance from the right-back. Offensively could have perhaps done slightly better, though in the first half he had a great moment crossing the ball inside the box for Piatek to send his header just wide.
Musacchio (7): From hero to zero. Conceded a penalty in Turin but won one at the San Siro at the most important moment. Otherwise, he returned to his usual self at the back and looked very secure alongside Romagnoli.
Romagnoli (7.5): A classic from the captain. Didn’t leave any space to Immobile and showed immense composure and calmness on the ball. The Nesta-esque tackle on Correa was the cherry on top of the cake.
Rodriguez (6.5): Probably the worst part of the defence, although his performance was not generally bad. Defensively he looked solid, offensively not so much. Risked a lot at the end of the match but it seemed that he hit the ball before hitting Milinkovic-Savic, thus Rocchi’s call was correct.
Kessie (7.5): The contribution Franck makes for Milan often goes unnoticed. The Ivorian had another incredible game and was all over the pitch, from helping the defenders at the back to scoring the winning goal from the spot. A great performance as a whole.
Bakayoko (7.5): And his colleague in the midfield trio had a similarly great game. His defensive contribution and tackling were on point. He was very disciplined and also showed off some of his skills throughout the game. A fine display.
Calhanoglu (6.5): Starting to gain more consistency in his performances. It was not a fantastic performance and at times it seemed that he was too eager to score but he adds that creative spark and vision to the game that cannot be underestimated.
Suso (6.5): Signs of recovery are also seen in Suso’s performances. Held the ball well today and had some impressive dribbles. Could have done much better on the two counter-attacks in the second half and almost scored at the end with a great strike but overall an improvement over the last weeks.
Piatek (7): A performance of great sacrifice and quality from the Pole. Could have scored a great headed goal in the first half but it went just wide but overall he caused Lazio’s defence a lot of trouble with his great movement on their half.
Borini (7): The surprise of the match. After a good performance in Turin, Borini also showed a fine display at home in the important showdown. His pace and determination were very valuable on the left and after later shifting to the right he also did very well. Made a lot of sacrifices in terms of defensive contribution as well.
Laxalt (6.5): Entered the pitch with great desire and played well and contributed to the team holding on to the result until the end.
Zapata (7): Two minutes after entering the pitch to replace an injured Romagnoli, he made an incredible solo attempt across the whole pitch, almost assisting Piatek on a potential winning goal. Defensively he was solid and did not give Lazio any chance to equalize.
Cutrone (6.5): A very nice couple of minutes from Cutrone. His determination and pace served will in the final minutes when Milan tried to hold on the ball. He too almost managed to score the second but his shot went just wide.
