Player Ratings: AC Milan 1-1 Roma – Reijnders crucial; full-backs struggle

AC Milan failed to make the most of their rivals dropping points as the game against Roma finished 1-1. Several players struggled to have the desired impact and below are the ratings for the Rossoneri.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): He couldn’t do anything about the goal, as it was a lovely finish by the Dybala, and he made a couple of other good stops. He also did good with his feet, so definitely a pass for the Frenchman today.

Emerson Royal (5.5): He almost gave away a goal with a very poor pass at the start of the game and made a few more questionable decisions in the build-up throughout the game. He was always available in attack, but didn’t have much success with his output.

Gabbia (6): It’s a tough one to judge, as Dovbyk caused issues for both the Italian and Thiaw, but ultimately the goal came from a moment of brilliance. It was exactly the same thing when Dovbyk hit the post, i.e. hard to defend against. The academy product did take a tactical yellow card, but that was more smart than anything.

Thiaw (6): Just like his colleague, it was a solid game overall and especially in times when Milan played well as a team, as the German was able to win back the ball often. The goal, once again, required more from others rather than the centre-backs.

Hernandez (5.5): It was much better from him moving forward, and by that I mean when he carried the ball from his own half, or further up. While he did create chances, however, the final touch was missing unfortunately, from poor decision-making to questionable shots. Considering the lack of willingness we have seen previously, though, this was somewhat of a step in the right direction.

Fofana (6.5): He bagged an assist after a fantastic run forward, exchanging the ball with Morata before setting up Reijnders. The pass could have been better, seeing as it bounced a lot, but the run that started the whole thing deserves a lot of praise. Furthermore, he made many interceptions throughout the game.

Terracciano (5.5): While some may point the finger at Hernandez on the goal, it seemed more like an error from the midfielder (full-back?) as Dybala entered the penalty box after a run. The former Verona man should have picked him up earlier, and he also didn’t play well overall.

Chukwueze (6): It was truly a mixed bag from him, with some very good actions and some very poor ones. It was still better than previous games, though everything was overshadowed by an injury that didn’t look so minor. It remains to be seen for how long he will be out, and it’s certainly not ideal with the January window coming up.

Reijnders (6.5 – MOTM): It was a great strike to open the scoring, especially since the ball bounced up, and he showed once again just how important he is. On the other hand, he had a poor pass just a minute after in a counter that perhaps should have resulted in a goal, and he faded a bit in the second half.

Jimenez (6.5): It was a lively start from the Spaniard, showcasing his skill especially on one counter-attack. His rating is bumped up by the goal-saving action at the end, as he disturbed Pellegrini just enough for the shot to be missed, but not enough for a penalty to be called.

Morata (5.5): He was involved in the goal with a run to the left but aside from that, even though the service wasn’t always the best, he clearly could have done better.

Substitutes

Bennacer (5.5): He gave away the ball just minutes after coming on and it could have been very costly, as Roma squandered a great chance. There were some improvements after that but nothing spectacular, unfortunately.

Abraham (6): Milan struggled to get the ball to him but when they did, at least on a couple of counter-attacks, he did really well and perhaps deserved more for his efforts.

Camarda (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

  1. Poor result even though they played better than Roma and better than the previous games.
Holding on to the ball too long and poor decision making stopped then from winning the game.
Hopefully, Conceicao can get rid of that sh!tty 4231 once and for all and play with 3 in the middle.
On the flip side, it’s always a joy to watch Dybala play. One of the last few of a dying breed. Skill and football IQ thru the roof, unlike most of the players today who are just strong, can ran fast, with very little skill and even less football IQ.

    1. Dybala was enormous tonight. To think we could’ve gotten him for free in 2022 instead of spending 35M€ that could’ve been used elsewhere (like getting Hjulmand who was sold for 19M€ the next year).
And to hell with salary cap !!

    2. “On the flip side, it’s always a joy to watch Dybala play. One of the last few of a dying breed. Skill and football IQ thru the roof, unlike most of the players today who are just strong, can ran fast, with very little skill and even less football IQ”

      Well said.

  2. An open and exciting game which I’m sure we would’ve won if two of our best players weren’t injured… And I still don’t get what mental blockage Fonseca has to playing Jimenez at right back instead of Royal… Overall though MOTM was Paulo Dybala by far. If only we’d signed him instead of a petrified sheep.

    1. Thats your ownership for you:

“the decision to go for De Ketelaere over Dybala was down to ownership policy: “It would have been much easier and much cheaper for us to go to someone like Dybala, but would it been right for our project and shared by the ownership? No.” “

        1. Still riding on this hindsight bs?🤣

We were telling you smarta*ss, arogant lot since the day Gerry took over what will happen. Things panned out exactly how we predicted. So now you’re out of excuses, you learned a new fancy word and throw it around without proper context. I really enjoy all this🤣

        2. Hindsight? Bro this was a direct quote lol 😅😅😅
Management/owners didn’t sanction Dybala because it’s not in line with cheap with the hope the value increases 🤷‍♂️ I dont understand what’s hindsight about that. It’s their policy..don’t revert on us now

  3. Mike and Theo 6
Gabbia, malik, emerson 5.5, got bossed
    Terrachiano 4.5, zero contribution
    Fofana 5.5, despite the assist
    Reijnders 6.5
Jimeniz 5.5, because of his last minute hussle
    Morata 5, just bad
Chukweze 7, up until the injury
Bennaser 6, plus 0.5 as a welcome back
    Tammy 5, practically useless

    1. Chuk a 7??? What game wer you watching? Hit hit one good shot that was saved. I can’t think of another stand out play that would merit the highest rating on the squad

      1. He was the most dangerous of our players. Got inside the box and squared it nicely at least three times. Not too mention his linkup play, and decent defensive work. Compared to everyone else today, his attitude and all over game stood out

  4. Once again the midfield can’t last like this, Tijji’s legs are going to go like Calabria and Theo. It’s not the coaches fault. He’s mediocre we play mediocre. But our star players are being wasted. Ancelotti and Allegri 2.0

  5. Reinders/Fofana partnership is something else and needs to be preserved and strengthened around. Need another DM next to them to take it to the next level.

Bennacer is an instant upgrade to TerrorCiano even if he’s still rusty AF.

Jimenez is a live wire. Love his hunger, fearlessness and direct approach. I don’t know if he needs to play RB or alternate RW/LW as he’s better than Okafor or Chukwueze. Nigerian’s injury may be a blessing in disguise in that either Puli goes back there or Jimenez alternates.

To me the MOTM today was Magic Mike. Single-handedly kept us in this game.

As for Fonseca, you can tell he’s feeling the pressure more than ever. May be the end of his stint if we’re lucky and the Conceicao rumors are true…

  6. I think we need to get the ownership out, the foreigners out except for 3, and the Indians out of our fan base. That would fix a lot of problems.

    1. Yea bro. I’m all for Italian players but what is this crap you are posting. “Indians out of our fan base” who are you the fan base police?

    2. Without the foreign players and foreign ownership Milan would be in serie B right now.
But don’t let that stop you from hating.

  7. Overall Milan played relatively well and we were very unlucky; we deserved the win but it didn’t come, out of a combination of issues:

    1) The opponent’s goalkeeper produced two miraculous saves on shots by Bennacer and Chuk
    2) The lousy ref didn’t call a clear PK on Reijnders
    3) Morata and Theo failed to score; Morata on a great cross by Jimenez, and Theo on a 1v1 against the goalie
    4) Several other unlucky bounces in offense thwarted otherwise good offensive plays
    5) The opponents produced a truly wonderful tying goal that was rather impossible to defend against. Mike was caught moving in the wrong direction and therefore wasn’t at fault, and while Terraciano failed, and even the solid Gabbia and Thiaw did fail a little bit, their goal was more thanks to skill from the opponents than failures from Milan’s defense

Our players who did well were Reijnders, Fofana, Maignan, and Jimenez, and these deserve more than a pass, with scores between 6.5 and 7.5, with Reijnders being the one with 7.5, having been out best player tonight. Gabbia and Thiaw deserve a pass (6).

Our players who did poorly were Morata, Terracciano, Emerson, and Chuk, with scores between 4.5 and 5. The latter did better than in recent games and was unlucky when he produced a most perfect shot but the goalie saved; still, he made too many mistakes, and was unlucky in collecting a muscle injury. Wow, Chuk is such an unlucky guy!

Our players who did so-so, deserving a 5.5 with ups and downs, were Bennacer (not bad for a return after 4 months), and Theo (not bad as compared to his previous games, but should have buried his 1v1 chance, and wasted some other shots).

Players who didn’t have a chance to do much due to late subs were Abraham and Camarda; no score for them.

Fonseca: even though Milan played better tonight, it doesn’t exempt Fonseca of the blame for the fact that we are in 8th place and even if we were to convert our game-in-hand, would still be in 8th place, and for this alone I won’t grant to him more than 5 despite the relatively good game. Strong rumors say that this was his last game as Milan’s head coach, and Sergio Conceição supposedly has accepted to take over. I do hope that this is true, because Conceição was my choice in the summer when we were considering coaches. I thought that he was the best option, while Fonseca was the worst option. Of course the clowns who are managing this club went for the worst possible option, with predictably mediocre results. It would surprise me a bit if the same clowns now correct it (a VERY late correction, but better than not doing anything) and hire the much more competent Conceição. I’m still afraid that they will commit another blunder and either keep Fonseca despite the rumors, or replace him with someone much worse than Conceição. Fingers crossed that it is Conceição; maybe we can get to the Champions League spots under him, and we DEFINITELY won’t get there if we keep Fonseca.

    1. All things considered, we’re in a tough moment. We’re missing our starting LW, backup LW, starting RW, and until the second half of this game in of our starting CMs (Bennacer), our starting LB is in a rut, and our strikers are in a rut. Our backup RW just went down too.

Despite this the team went toe to toe with a nearly full strength Roma, and our defense has been relatively good this season, being the 5th best by goals conceded despite everything else and all the drama.

I think if we get Leao and Puli back, Benny gets up to speed and Theo and the strikers can get going we’ll be OK. The issue is that despite our problems, the team is holding it’s own right now, while we dropped points early in the season when we were only missing Benny. It’s almost like we’ve finally figured out how to play, but now don’t have the quality on the pitch to execute.

If not for the penalty that wasn’t called and some poor finishing, we would have won this game despite missing 3 key players and Theo being MIA. I dunno. I honestly don’t know if Fonseca should be given another month, or if he should be sacked ASAP.

      1. We went toe to toe with a team who had more losses than wins and who is on its third coach this season. This is not the AS Roma who used to fight for an UCL spot, this is a sinking ship which is currently worse than us and we’re playing at home.
We have many injuries but each season we face a big number of injuries at this time of the season and let’s face it, we were already way below the top before the injury crisis started.
We looked a bit better today, but so we did some games ago. In the end, we never maintained a good form and between each “good” game, we have 3 or 4 bad ones.
Fonseca should be sacked ASAP, as well as Ibra and Moncada. 7th or 17th place are all the same, so we have nothing to lose at this point, and he already proved that he is nothing more but an average coach.

    2. “1) The opponent’s goalkeeper produced two miraculous saves on shots by Bennacer and Chuk”

LOL. Nope. Basic everyday saves. Didn’t even have to do a full stretch on either.

  8. Trash. Trash and more trash.
Where’s K? Please let us know when we can make judgements. It’s no longer one third the way through.
We’re solidly 8th, Bologna level. Even if we win a game it doesn’t change the perspective or standings unlike say Juve.
Btw Theo should be rated higher. Him and Jiminez were pretty good down the left. Good combinations. If u can give Jimi a 6 certainly Theo deserves the same.

    1. Right here douche. Did we not play well enough to win? Did we not create enough chances? Even with our two top attacking players out and basically starting 6 db’s we outplayed a full strength Roma. Is it Fonsecas fault the players didn’t finish their chances? It wasn’t a tactical issue. Is it Fonseca’s or management’s fault a clear and obvious penalty wasn’t called?
And stop your pathetic ass kissing of Theo. He was bad once again. A ton of opportunities that he just squandered by delivering the wrong pass or not passing at all when he should have. He’s consistently be one of the teams worst players all season Jiminez already looks miles better than Theo bothe attacking wise and defending. But yes, by all means keep celebrating every time Milan drops points , you pathetic excuse for a fan.

      1. We did not play well enough to win. If we did we’d won. And yes it’s fonsecas fault we players don’t convert chances.
A real coach would be having them do shooting drills unit they do convert chances. Especially Morata, Abe and chuku

It’s always wise to make judgements not even a third of the way through the season…”

You said this not me. Just giving back your own medicine and clearly you can’t take it

  9. Emerson, my god that dude plays like a Sunday league substitute. I hope if Conceicao really takes over, he puts this bum to the bench. Permanentely until they find a bigger sucker who’d take him in. Turkey maybe?

    1. Exactly. If Conceicao has any sense, he’ll bench that clown instantly and that alone will do wonders to our results. If not, then he deserves to go after May.

  10. Svilar was elected the Panini Player of the Match, which further confirms what I said, that we did deserve to win this game. He saved two certain goals that would have been enough for our victory.
    ———-
Fonseca is saying he will be coaching in the Supercoppa. I really hope not, but if he is saying so, maybe he did hear from the management that he will stay for the Supercoppa, which increases my fear that the CLOWNS who manage our club will AGAIN fail to act. Unbelievable.

    1. For some reason I think he could probably pull off the Super Copa trophy. That’s the kind of luck these sorts of coaches have lol 😂

    2. Act towards what? They almost spelled it out for you in their recent interviews – sporting results comes second in their business project. The once again sold out San Siro – that’s all that matters to them. Hell, they’re even slowly abandoning our red and black jersey to aggresively market that awful third kit. These are their priorities and they won’t change no matter what happens. It’s no longer an opinion from annoyed fans, it’s literally what they talk about openly in interviews.

      1. Sure, but on the other hand, they do not want to pass on the Champions League money for the 2025/2026 season, and it seems rather clear that we won’t get one of the top 4 spots (or 5 if Serie A qualifies again for a fifth spot) if we keep Fonseca.

Like I’ve been saying for weeks, that’s the ONLY thing that will motivate them to act: the financial bottom line. Passing on more than 100 million Euro from UCL money to keep a coach that makes 2 M Euro per year makes no sense whatsoever, for the ONE thing that matters to them: money.

It is not guaranteed that changing coach mid-season will get us to the next UCL because often such late moves don’t work well (they should have done it much sooner). But in my opinion, at this point we have nothing to lose. I think it is pretty much 99% guaranteed that with Fonseca we won’t qualify for the next UCL, but with Conceição, as unlikely as this qualification might be, it’s probably more than 1%.

Say, the odds to make it with Fonseca are 1%, and the odds to make it with Conceição are 10%.

That’s 10 times better odds to make those 100 M Euro. Given that apparently there is an exit clause in Fonseca’s contract that would permit the club to part ways with him without penalty and without paying his next semester’s salary which would be 1 million Euro, and given that the rumor is that Conceição apparently has accepted to be paid 1 M Euro to coach Milan for 6 months (with a 1-year renewal clause in favor of the club), the owner is actually not losing any money by firing Fonseca and hiring Conceição, so, if this can be done without losing money, and if it increases the odds that the UCL money will come by a factor of ten times in my hypothetical example, then it makes financial sense.

      2. They said no such thing, stop making things up. They spoke about returning the club to where it once was, which is the exact opposite of your false bottom line rhetoric.

  11. Rating for Morata is too high.
He had a bad miss that which would have made it two nil just after the first goal.
And he faded from that point.

Chuk was quiet first half. But was looking really good in the 2nd. Real shame about the injury.

Jimenez really is a find. Thrown into his 3rd position through injury. Did well on both wings. Saved the game with his pressure in defence in the final minutes.

Terracciano was decent I thought. He allows Fofana more freedom to run forward. Bennacer looked quiet slow throughout. His passes were very rusty to begin with but got better.

    1. Terracciano was decent? He touched the ball only twice in the entire first half (that is, his entire time, given that he was subbed out at the start of the second half).

How is that, being decent??? Disappearing act. Non-factor.

      1. What was his role though?

It appears to be staying back as a DM and allow Fofana and Reijnders more freedom.
I didn’t notice any mistakes from him. Noting that the reviewer felt he contributed to the goal by not tracking Dybala. I’d have to watch some replays to pass judgement on that.

Fofana was great in the first half. Less so when Bennacer came on.
Bennacer seemed to be involved more in the build up but I felt like I was watching someone in cement shoes. And that he would be dispossessed at any moment.
He did cost us a chance where Roma had a 4 on 2 chance and wasted it.
Admittedly he got better late in the game.

Essentially I saw fewer mistakes from Terracciano and his midfield team mates having more freedom to get forward when he is on the field.

  12. Ok. First, the ref was terrible. Besides the foul in the box, anytime a Roma player went down it was a foul. Some players were decent- Reijnders, Theo, Bennacer, Fofana(except for his need to shoot from 30 yds out, Jimenez, Gabbia and Thiaw. The rest were unacceptable. Royal makes the winger on his side worse so hard to judge Chuck. The worse thing about Royal is he thinks he is better than he is. Awful crosses, shots and drives.

  13. BREAKING NEWS: Fonseca has confirmed to Sky that he’s been fired.

“Sì. Sono uscito dal Milan. È la vita, è così. Ho la coscienza calma, ho fatto tutto quello che potevo fare.”

It’s been also confirmed that Conceição will arrive tomorrow to Milano to sign his contract.

  14. The main issues still remain pressing, correct decision making and movement off the ball. If the next coach can address this, we will be good to go.

Only Fofana, our CBs and maybe Morata know how to press effectively and the lack of proper press creates all sorts of gaps in our play, needs a quick fix.

  15. BORING as usual – terrible football and we were lucky to tie

Thank god Fonseca is now gone – Good Riddance

Zlatan Furlani and Moncada should follow him out the door

    Nice to see Benny back.

Chukuweze is trash; Terracciano is not a DM nor a fullback nor a CB – not sure what the hell he is or what he does. Emerson is LOL. Morata seems to just run around. Tammy can’t score if his life depended on it.

Hope Conceicao will have a better relationship with the players and have better tactics to get the best out of the lads.

Only took us risking UCL for next season for Gerry to make a move. Had we been a few points out of 4th place Fonseca would still have a job. PROFIT and NOT TITLES is all Redbird care about

    Gross

  16. There is still some people upstairs thinks we could have won the game ? That’s pathetic.

The dude with Milan shirt profile pic perhaps has some issues inside his head !? Maybe he’s only been a fan for just two years?. Or he actually works for Redbird daddy.. haha

  17. Emerson: “He was always available in attack, but didn’t have much success with his output.”

Of course he is!!! Everyone knows he’s not a threat and him getting the ball is the best thing for the opponent and he’s the one who will always ruin the Milan attack.
