Player Ratings: AC Milan 3-1 Hellas Verona – Leao explodes; Giroud scores again

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan clinched all three points against Hellas Verona thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao (X2), ending the season with a win. Down below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): A decent game from the keeper, who wasn’t really called into action much except when he needed to come off his line and stop a 1v1, which he did well. He couldn’t do anything about the goal.

Calabria (5): He tried his luck one too many times, in attack that is, failing to hit the target by some distance on most. And he was sleeping on Verona’s equaliser.

Thiaw (5.5): Some good moments mixed with some rather poor ones. He’s still very raw, that’s becoming clear, and the consistency that a centre-back needs to have isn’t really there just yet.

Tomori (5.5): He did well to win the ball high up the pitch on a couple of occasions but also had a couple of really strange moments defending-wise. He continues to be inconsistent.

Hernandez (6): Questions can be asked on the goal, but the truth is his defenders were caught off guard way before him. And he was one of the few players that actually created something when Milan went forward.

Krunic (5.5): Not enough involvement from him tonight, even if he was – as always – a hard worker in the defensive phase and covered a lot of space in that sense.

Tonali (5.5): He didn’t quite run the show as he usually does, was the feeling this evening. Not to say that he was horrible on the ball or anything, but the midfield battle wasn’t clearly in Milan’s favour in the spaces it mattered.

Messias (4): Was he even on the pitch? It’s getting tiring to say the same things week in and week out about him – and luckily I won’t have to!

Diaz (5.5): He won the penalty after getting to a 50/50 ball first but other than that, he really wasn’t that great. Too slow with his passing and also lost the battles against a physical Verona side way too much.

Leao (7.5 – MOTM): He looked a bit tired, in truth, and lacked that edge we love so much. Up until the 85th minute that was, when he completely exploded and did what only he and perhaps Theo can do, taking matters into his own hand and finishing in style. And then he did the same again! Sealing the deal in the 92nd minute with another solo run of sorts, rounding the keeper.

Giroud (7): His third consecutive game finding the back of the net, converting the penalty with ease. He also did well to combine with his teammates tonight and won many of his duels, despite facing very strong defenders.

Substitutes

De Ketelaere (6): Bright display off the bench from him, winning the ball back and getting past his opponents when driving forward with the ball.

Pobega (5.5): He didn’t add that much to the game, in truth, and was on par with the other midfielders tonight.,

Florenzi (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

Saelemaekers (6): Helped set up the third goal with a nice combination with Leao, and nearly scored a nice curler himself.

Mirante (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating. But thanks for your service, Antonio!

  1. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHY MESSIAH IS STARTING ALWAYS OVER SALEMAKERS?
Is he bribing corrupt Pioli or what ?
5 mins Salemakers is more effective than 81 minutes of Messiah, yet Messiah is a starter, joke Pioli

    1. Let’s hope that Pioli needed to see how really bad Messias is, in order to let management know that he needs to be sold at all cost.

    2. Messias was convinced to change football agents when he signed for Milan, he joined the agency that represents only 1 other person at Milan as far as im aware, that person is no ther than Stefano Pioli. Its the only thing I can think of as to why he keeps picking Messias over Saeledinho.

    3. The only thing I can think of is that Pioli prefers an inverted winger. Just like Leao on the left. With that in mind, we should start looking for a decent left footed right winger. CdK is left footed, but I don’t think Pioli will ever see him as a winger.

  2. Well done Olivier Giroud and Rafeol leao ..
Giroud is class and worked extremely hard ,and won many Ariel duals …Rafeol leao was quiet for most the game then explodes …He is always capable of doing something…Salamakers should have started the match ,he did well when he came on ..just hope we keep hold of him …I think we will do well next season ..

  3. CDK showed some life in this match, I don’t know why Pioli didn’t start him from the start. I know a lot of us including me have continuously criticized him, but it is still sad that he is leaving, maybe because he has been with us for a while now.

  4. The suprise for me was CDK who showed glimpses of how he played at Brugge, let’s hope we see the real CDK next season, second seasons have always proven well for our players.

  5. Saelermakers is more perfect than messias but Pioli try and consider Kjaer and kalulu in our line up those guys are important now this next week Acmilan should use this medium to sign solid players to occupy the open point to me I would prefer orsolini or Nelson to replace messias then baldanzi or sardmardzic to replace Brahim diaz since Madrid refuse but Acmilan need a dribbler similar to Diaz, them pulisic to assist leao then Noah Okafor or openda then one left back to support Theo Hernandez then kalulu to support Calabria

  6. Been criticizing CdK perhaps for this whole season, but that was a decent cameo from him. The confidence. Hope to see more like that from him next season.

All in all, it’s been a great ride. And it’s been a colorful comment section to say the least. Can’t wait share thoughts again with all of you in this beloved channel next season.

    Cheers guys.

  7. From the rate, the match should be the last match for Messias. A better right winger should come. Diaz also can go, since he is not a suitable No. 10 for Milan. Milan need more quality player in the position. Pioli need to relaunch CDK during next summer and compete with Kamada.

  8. Thank you ibra.
I am happy and proud that you retire in milan shirt.
You always stay true to your words.
Whenever you come to milan you always help them won the title.
You will forever be in Milanisti’s hearts

  9. Those that has always been critics over Leao should at least praise him after all said and done this season.
Maybe you all are now disappointed he signed his contract and of course AC Milan player of the season for a second season in a row, what stopped him from becoming Serie A player of the season this season is because Milan didn’t win the league.

    Kid got:
    16 goals
    15 assists
In all cops, Kvaraschelia is not better than Leao because during this season I see many insult Leao because of Kvaraschelia.
    Shame on Leao critics.

Happy end of the season Fellow Milan faithfuls
    ❤🖤

    1. Well that’s the difference : the title. Where Kvara managed to bring Napoli to the Scudetto, Leao didn’t.

      Their stats actually similar :

      Serie A :
      Leao 15 G/ 10 A, 15 goal contributions in 35 matches.
      Kvara 12 G/13 A, 15 in 34 matches.

      Total :
      Leao 16G/15A, total 31
      Kvara 14G/17A, total 31

Since their numbers are similar, then it’s down to the title that they got. Napoli got Scudetto but we only got 4th. It’s clear – for reminder Leao win MVP last season with 11G/10A in Serie A, and 14G/12A total – so both Leao and Kvara actually better than last season.

But on that note we should also notice the drop in Kvaras performance in second half of serie A: by 22th serie A match he got 11G/9A (20 goal contribution) yet in the next 12 matches he only add 1 goal and 4 assists. Seems like the heavy defeat in Naples from us (28th match day) and subsequent defeat at CL QF really affect him mentally more than we think 😅 and that’s one of reasons why Leao can get the same number. His performances in first 22 games is unreal, hope he can recover next season and compete with Leao again. Serie A needs more player like them to be back into the top.

    1. As what I said in my previous comment, Kvara was unplayable in first half of serie A.

Maybe not alone but definitely played a big part. Osimhen also can’t win scudetto alone.

  10. I only watched some of the game as i was far too drunk to keep up with it but zlatans farewell made me so like a small child

  11. We win 3-1 but the backline and the players overall got such bad ratings. Smh. Let’s hope for a better Milan and better ratings next year 😅
    Forza Milan, Forza Ibra
