Milan players vs. Sassuolo Coppa Italia

Player Ratings: AC Milan 6-1 Sassuolo – Pavlovic responds; Reijnders can’t stop

AC Milan battered Sassuolo in the Coppa Italia, winning 6-1, and it was a big confidence boost for many players on the San Siro turf. Below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri, with a few of them standing out.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Starting XI

Sportiello (6): In terms of saving shots, he wasn’t called into action that much and displayed decent ability on the ball. He gets a pass here anyway, but he perhaps could have avoided the rebound Sassuolo scored the offside goal on.

Calabria (6.5): Compared to the Slovan display, which was really poor from him, this was much better as he actually contributed well in both phases of the game. This was shown on the goal as he made the most of a rebound. Defensively there wasn’t much to complain about either, but that goal will surely give him a confidence boost.

Tomori (5.5): He’s the only player not to get a pass here, simply because his positioning was questionable on several occasions, especially on the goal as he lost his man. Furthermore, he made a sloppy mistake which would have resulted in a goal 9/10, but he was bailed out by his colleague Pavlovic.

Pavlovic (7): The Serbian started well with many good interceptions and duels one in the first half, which is something that also continued in the second. Above all, he rescued his colleague Tomori with a fantastic last-ditch tackle to keep Milan from conceding a certain goal. One of his best games with the red and black shirt, but still a bit rash at times.

Terracciano (6): Given that he could have done better on the goal, he just about avoided a 5.5 here. It was a very good pass for Abraham in the build-up to the third goal, and he also finished the game well as a midfielder. You can see why Fonseca likes his movement and understanding when Milan are in possession, that’s for sure.

Fofana (6): Some dangerous passes at the back, a few that went Milan’s way and a few that didn’t, but overall good passing from the Frenchman. A decent display overall and he was also taken off at half-time. He can still work on decreasing the danger of the passes (through his positioning in certain moments).

Reijnders (8 – MOTM): It was an incredible pass for Chukwueze’s opener, showcasing world-class vision as well as execution, and the strike to make it 2-0 was just wonderful in every way. The form he’s in currently is amazing, and could well (hopefully) be decisive vs. Atalanta too.

Chukwueze (7): He admittedly got a bit lucky with the first goal, or unlucky depending on how you look at it as the first shot struck the post, but the second goal was well taken. Even if the end product could have been better in the 1v1s, he got two goals and that counts for a lot. He also had a couple of nice set pieces, but for a higher rating more success in the 1v1s would have been needed.

Loftus-Cheek (6.5): Powering runs forward and a fantastic assist for Leao after one of the aforementioned. He also had a couple of good efforts, one left-footed shot and one header, which nearly went into the back of the net. In short, much better than what we have seen this season from him.

Leao (7): Lively from the get-go, was heavily involved in the build-up for Reijnders’ goal and then got one himself with a powerful low-driven shot at the near post. It was right to take him off at half-time given the upcoming game.

Abraham (7): He combined well with his teammates, especially Leao, and got the assist for Chukwueze’s second goal. Then he managed to find the back of the net himself with a smart finish from a tight angle.

Substitutes

Torriani (N/A): Perhaps he could have done better on the goal, but it was a low-driven effort with good power. We didn’t really see enough to give him a rating, though, aside from a late offside save.

Musah (6): He did well in the ‘Fofana role’ with some good movement and passing. Nothing spectacular, of course, but certainly decent.

Pulisic (6): The winger was heavily involved in the fifth goal, i.e. the one scored by Calabria, as his cross/shot struck the inside of the post. After that he continued to combine well with his attacking mates. With more time and chances he probably would have got a higher rating.

Okafor (6): Okay work in the 1v1s and he managed to get an (easy) assist for Abraham. Truth be told it wasn’t a fantastic pass but the Englishman did well with the effort.

Bartesaghi (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

  1. This wasn’t a game, this was more like a target practise. We could as well have tried to play this with Futuro to make more suspense out of it. Fonseca fielded Sportiello then Torriani but even if we played with no goalie who probably still have won this game. It was good for them that Sassuolo got some shots across and that it wasn’t that cold otherwise they might have catched a cold by doing nothing the entire game.
The only real challenge was in the first half between Fofana and Reijnders to see who will get more long balls across.
The ratings are meaningless. Are we supposed to rate the players for half an hour ? Because everything after that was irrelevant and yet we still scored and can you blame a player for not being focused when the score is already 5-0 ?
Onto to Atalanta in Bergamo, but in the meantime, nice payback to Sassuolo for all those defeats during the last years.

      1. As nice as the coppa is, Sassuolo was never going anywhere in that competition. Better to focus on Serie B to get back into Serie A immediately.

  2. Take this confidence boost into the Atalanta game. Reijnders continues to play next level.

Credit to the management for scouting this kid among the f-ups.

    1. Pleasant result and I’m happy to be proven wrong about Reijnders but still the fact that he needed more than a year to become a strong player evidences that poor recruiting policy when Milan should be recruiting top players. Most incoming players need time to develop or are busts. This team is an endless unfinished business for the sake of not spending too much.

      1. Barth, come on! We won 6-1 and Reijnders was again utterly brilliant, and you still fault him for his first season? By the way, while his finishing in his first season was atrocious (something apparently he has definitely fixed, now; 7 goals scored, already), he was already a very good player at the time, too. Only the goals were missing but the midfield good work was already there. Now he has improved even more his midfield play, and has added the goals. So, we get this superb player for cheap and you still fault the recruiting policy? That’s exactly what a scout needs to do: spot a player with great potential who can be had for cheap. While there are reasons to fault the recruiting regarding some other players (Terracciano and Emerson come to mind), Reijnders is definitely NOT one of those reasons!!!

      2. Also in order to build to get back to where we were we finished 10th and 11th with a team that had George Weah, Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Demetrio Albertini, Billy Costacurta, Desailly, Savicevic, Roberto Baggio, Edgar Davids, Mauro Tassotti, Boban, Simone and Vierchowod. Things don’t just happen over night, sometimes you need to be reminded of our history because you let your emotions get the better of you.

        1. Exactly. With the teams they had, Sacchi and Ancelotti only won two titles between them. And yet they’re lauded as these genius coaches – mainly because of their exploits in Europe. It’s all emotional hysterics with some fans…

      3. Last season pioli use Tiji more defensive as double pivot due to no DMF or other midfield with defensive atribute . Kessie need 3 years to play good , Tonali first season are just bench warmer watching ben & kessie play, benna first season also awful under giampaolo & pioli but benn lucky got pairing with physical midfield like kessie

      4. Bart is so pathetic. Desperately reaching for any reason to criticize management and the signings they made. Reijnders was a great signing. So was Pulisic. So was Fofana. Abraham has played well. Morata has played well. Musah has contributed this season and Chuku has been a decent backup . Maybe just maybe they know more than you Bart.

        1. I’m just saying that this policy of recruiting 15-20M€ players won’t bring trophies or any achievements. You can find it pathetic if you like. What I find pathetic is rooting for mediocrity since the Scudetto. Now just breathe, I hope I didn’t ruin your day, peace.

          1. Tonali was bought for around 17M. Giroud was 1M. Rebic was a swap for Andre Silva plus like 3M. Tomori was a loan. Kalulu was 500K or something similar. Theo signed for 24M. Bennacer was less than 20M.
Those players won a Scudetto for us.

So how does buying players for low prices mean we won’t win anything? It’s not about the size of your wallet, but how you use it.

          2. Yeah it’s the point. Recruiting cheap promising players to develop at a time when Milan was down is very different as recruiting cheap promising players when the team won a Scudetto and should have capitalized on a strong core by surrounding them with proven players instead of guys who need time to develop. Endless rebuilding. It should be painful to any Milan fan but everyone is free to enjoy the rollercoaster we have for the past years.

      5. Yes every young player should be top tier like Mbappe. Honestly Mbappe is the only non trash player out there. And Milan it took them a season and a half to get the best out of a young player, they obviously can’t scout or improve players, what a trash club for finding and developing talent. Bart you’re so wise, Milan should avoid talented young players and try to out bid state funded clubs for players at the prime FFP and it’s consequences be damned

          1. Apples and oranges, Inter doesn’t have FFP violations. Idk if you were paying attention but this situation (brought on by Berlusconi’s greedy decision to sell to a literal fraud) was predicted In 2016 when literally every pundit criticized the insanity that was the end of the Berlusconi era. This is our reality as fans. So as long as you’re sticking with your relentless negativity in the face of these sanctions the rest of us will call you out.

      6. “Pleasant result.” 🙂 FYI Reijnders has been a strong player since he joined – just you, Rossi, Igor, Heir and the like refuse to admit it because he’s a RedBird and not a Maldini purchase.

      7. “Pleasant result and I’m happy to be proven wrong about Reijnders but still the fact that he needed more than a year to become a strong player evidences that poor recruiting policy”

        Just like Tonali. Poor, poor business, right? 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

    2. The f-ups are balanced by the good purchases imo. And frustrating as they are, players like Chuk and Pavlo can still come good.

      1. Many of them definitely still need time. But I want to be seeing more out of Musah. I want a better striker up front than Morata despite his work rate. I want a better RB and I want stronger CB’s.

Management has made mistakes for sure. But like I said, we have to give them credit for the signings that have been stellar in Fofana, Pulisic and Reijnders.

        1. Agree – things are looking up with everyone though even if only against “weaker” opposition. I want to see what moves they make in January to fix their mistakes.

  3. First of all, let’s acknowledge that Sassuolo are a poor shadow of their past and definitely looked like a Serie B team (despite currently leading Serie B); arguably the weakest opponents we faced all season. This game felt like a training session for our lads rather than an official game. Still, last time, we got eliminated from Coppa in our first game, so, what we did tonight beats that, and we’re happy. We are also happy with the prolific scoring.

Sportiello – A spectator. No reason not to give him a pass, so, 6

Calabria – great game, his best in a good while. Yes, the opponents were weak, but that doesn’t mean we should discount the merit of all the players who did well, because we’ve been known for struggling even against bad teams. Calabria defended well, attacked well, and had a goal. 7.5

Tomori – a disaster. Almost gifted the weak opponents a goal if not for Pavlovic rescuing him; lost his man in the opponents’ only goal. 5. I’m frustrated with Tomori who commits sloppy mistakes with alarming frequency and in my opinion he should be sold.

Pavlovic, again saved a certain goal, with a perfect tackle. Otherwise made no mistakes although his positioning remains a bit erratic. 6.5.

Terracciano, got late to the defensive effort in the opponents’ goal and misplaced a couple of passes while he was still playing as the LB. Did help with resting Reijnders when he moved to the midfield and was decent there, and over there he made no mistakes, so, for that, he gets a pass. 6. Still, even though he gets a pass, every time he plays we are reminded that we really do need a better deputy for Theo.

Fofana, some misguided passes; just tired; needed the rest; fortunately only played one half. Had some good actions too, so, he gets a pass. I’m not worried at all about Fofana not having a brilliant game due to fatigue; he’s been doing a lot for this team lately; the man can definitely use the half-game rest he got; I’d have given him the full game to rest, by calling up Zeroli. 6

Reijnders, superb. MOTM. He’s been really brilliant, lately. And scored. 8.5 (my only concern about his spectacular form, is that this will undoubtedly encourage richer teams to try to buy him from us).

RLC, arguably his best game of the season. Again, the opponents are weak but what I said when commenting on Calabria applies to him too; we shouldn’t deny him the merit just because of the opponents. Great assist, and almost scored twice. Did not fall to the ground so easily like he often does. 7

Chuk, started poorly with some misguided actions and was a ball hog sometimes, but hey, he did improve and he did score a brace, so, 7.5

Rafa, only played a half, to rest for Atalanta, but was still incisive and dangerous; from his burst into the box, stopped by a block tackle, the ball went to Reijnders who scored so Rafa did participate in that effort. Then he scored himself in a great finishing. 7

Abraham, a goal and an assist, and a lot of energy also helping defensively. Great game, 7.5

    Subs

Torriani, big failure in their goal, and a good stop at the end, but he doesn’t get a pass due to the mistake of allowing a goal in his near post. Sure, he’s young, but he has done better in other showings with the first team, and we shouldn’t just ignore the mistake because he’s young. 5.5

Musah, did his job decently. 6

Pulisic, hit the post and the rebound became a goal for Calabria. Had other good actions. 6.5

Okafor, gets a pass because of the assist but otherwise he wasn’t that good; he was one of the weakest players tonight but a goal participation is always a goal participation, so, 6

Bartesaghi, played just a few minutes but made no mistakes, so, no reason not to give him a pass. 6

Mister Fonseca: We do need to acknowledge the merit of encouraging the team to be motivated even against a very weak opponent which hasn’t always been the case. He appropriately rested essential players for the whole game or for a good portion of the game, in view of the Atalanta match coming up in 3 days. A pity that he didn’t bring in Camarda; this game was the golden opportunity for Camarda to score his first senior goal. Bringing in Bartesaghi to rest Reijnders by allowing Terracciano to move to the midfield was a creative solution (given that we needed to rest both Fofana and Reijnders but had only one midfielder on the bench, Musah). On the other hand, he could have called up Zeroli. All things considered, I grant to Fonseca a 7.

    1. Fonseca deserves a 5. Starting defense was fine, but Musah and RLC should have started in the pivot, with Liberali or Zeroli playing at AM. I liked Leao from the start, but Pulisic, Reijnders and Fofana should not have seen the pitch unless it was an emergency. Then for subs it could have been Fofana for one of the two pivot mids (or Terra to the middle with Bertesaghi to LB, as actually happened), Liberali for Zeroli (or vice versa depending on who started), Okafor for Leao, Camarda for Tammy. We need to rest our best players. He’s going to run Fofana, Reijnders and Puli into the ground. I understand that we want to progress in this competition, but the company will mean nothing even if we win it and fail to finish top 4.

      1. Sportiello, a 6 because he did nothing wrong but also nothing right; not his fault because Sassuolo simply could not threaten him. It’s hard to give to a player anything other than a passing grade when he pretty much just observes the game without needing to do any work. That’s not a criticism of Sportiello. It’s just how it happened. Had he made at least one good save I’d have given him a higher score, but he never got the opportunity, therefore, just a passing grade.

  4. Nice easy win vs a lower level team playing without their best players.
Individually Chukwueze is so frustrating to watch. He has obvious talent but his absolute inability to use his right foot negates everything else.
How can you train every day for almost all your life and not work on your weak foot to at least make it functional? And it’s especially obvious with left footed players, Chukwueze, Theo, Giroud, all of them can’t do anything with their right foot.
Questionable decision by Fonseca when it comes to subs. Don’t know why he put Pulisic in the game at all instead of playing tge youngsters and why he took RLC at half but kept Reijnders in. Reijnders must have an extra lung. It’s funny how some were actually hating on him and were trying to hype up players like Frattesi, Tonali, Bennacer, just because he wasn’t signed by tge previous directors.
    On to Atalanta.
Shout out for our own Tomaso Pobega on great goal for Bologna today.

    1. In your, you just hated on Chuk despite him getting the brace. If we’re talking season long, yes, but he got a brace today.

    2. Agree about Chuk. He might get away with it against a weak team like this but he will never progress if he doesn’t learn how to use his right foot.

    3. “And it’s especially obvious with left footed players, Chukwueze, Theo, Giroud, all of them can’t do anything with their right foot.”
      And not just ours.
I’ve always noticed that left footed players tend to have a significantly weaker right foot (Robben, Messi and Maradona on top of my head) while right footed players seem sometimes ambidextrous (Pelé, Ronaldo, C.Ronaldo, Pedro Rodriguez,…). The only right footed player I can think of on top of my head who can’t use his left was Beckham.

      1. Damn Fabri the notorious judge of wise men just deemed me unworthy. Sad day. I’ll call my mom. Enjoy that era of greatness for Milan with those shiny transfers and the flood of trophies.

    1. Isn’t his point that we did build, and we won the Scudetto and then we dismantled that squad and had to rebuild again, and presumably in the unlikely event we win the Scudetto again we’ll dismantle that team and rebuild again .

It’s the dismantling what we had that is the issue….

  6. There were many positives tonight, mainly the fact that we practically finished our job for 20 minutes and played the rest of the game comfortably, keeping some energy resources for Bergamo. And of course, the fact that so many “reserve” players took the field with hunger and managed to make the most of the coach’s faith in them. I liked the group spirit, especially in attack where Rafa, Tammy and Samu combined without the usual selfishness you see when the coach makes a lot of changes and the players are overeager to shine under the spotlight so that they can play more often.

The negatives – we conceded yet again, against a weak Sassuolo team that opted to rest Berardi. Tomori and Terraciano are probably the only players who don’t deserve a high individual rating since they were at fault for the goal (Torriani could’ve also done better, but the kid is young and has a lot of potential). Tomori nearly gifted a goal a minute earlier only to be saved by Pavlovic who finally delivered a convincing performance. Nevertheless, the defensive issue remains. The lack of concentration and synergy between our back four is troubling.
The other negative is Camarda watching the whole game from the bench. It was the perfect moment to give him more game time and he could’ve even scored his debut goal against panicking Sassuolo defenders who had already waved the white flag in the 23th minute. A weird decision from Fonseca that I had trouble understanding. Pulisic should’ve been rested for the whole game with Francesco coming in instead of him.

  7. How Tomori is getting blamed for that goal is beyond me right now.

Terracciano couldn’t keep up with his man and went to ground trying to tackle him. The opponent dinked the ball past him and crossed it back into the middle.

There were 4 Milan players around Mulattieri, two of which were between the pass and the player, but sure go ahead and blame Tomori who was coming in from the other side to try and block the shot. Don’t blame the Italian guy who didn’t stop the cross from getting in or Torriani who should have saved that goal on his near post.

I swear y’all just hate Fikayo for “reasons”.

    1. The fact that Terraciano lost his man with an empty tackle doesn’t mean not single thing could’ve been done to prevent the goal. Even if you have a different take on the goal conceded, what about his horrific mistake 60 seconds earlier when he seemingly fell asleep while holding the ball and the attacker dispossessed him before going 1v1 with Torriani?

Tomori was key part of our scudetto winning team, but he has truly fallen apart ever since then, no point in denying it. He had a good game in Madrid, but he is prone to mistakes any time he enters the field. Not really sure what’s the reason, maybe coaches being unable to find him a suitable partner has a lot do with it, but he doesn’t make their job easier with bad individual performances. Thiaw and Gabbia so far have done better and deserve to be our starting CBs. It’s not an “Italian” or “English” thing, it’s what we see with our eyes. Coming from someone who supported the guy when he was massacred during the nightmarish January 2023. It’s just the lack of progress in him that makes me lose faith we’ll see the Tomori of 2021 and 2022 ever again.

      1. Tomori being paired with Gabbia and with Thiaw this season has been perfectly fine. Inter, Madrid, Club Brugges, Lecce can all attest to this.

His brainfart games always come when he’s paired with Pavlovic.

Pavlovic and Thiaw have been our starting Serie A league pairing for the month of November, and we were heavily criticized for our matches in that period.

Parma match was on Theo’s laziness and failure to outpace Dennis Man, TWICE.

Fiorentina match was more Theo’s issue.
Torino’s 2nd goal was on Theo and Pavlovic.

        See a pattern?

The only game I can remember that a goal was directly on Fikayo was the 1-0 loss to Leverkusen when he missed a ball in the air.

Heck even the Slovan Bratislava second goal was (a) two fouls against Milan players in the opponent third not being called, (b) a dribble from Theo’s flank that was not cut out by Pavlovic, and (c) a Worldie of a goal by Marcelli at the top of the box.

I swear Milan fans just hate Fikayo indiscriminately.

        1. The first Liverpool goal, Fiorentina’s second (a comical error, really), arguably at fault for keeping Dimarco onside, although that’s debatable. And why would you only count actual goals, aren’t you concerned by the mistake themselves? There are plenty of times when the teams simply don’t take advantage or his teammates come to the rescue, like Pavlovic did tonight.

As for Theo, I agree, so far he has been our worst defender of the season. Not only do many of the goals conceded have his fingerprints on them, but what’s even worse is that vastly different coaches now officially instruct their players to do same thing (diagonal crosses between our left CB and Theo) and most of the time it’s successful with Cagliari looking more like Real Madrid than the actual Real that week being the highlight of his (and ours) defensive misfortunes.

And seriously, what’s with the paranoia in this site? Why does every objective criticism of a player have to be some wild conspiracy? No one is disrespecting Calabria, he simply isn’t the best RB in the world and there are games where that is way too obvious, to put it mildly. Why does the fact that he comes from our youth system have to stop me from pointing it out? Why does the fact that Leao is among our top 3 players have to prevent anyone from pointing out the lack of desire and inspiration in some of his performances, especially during the early part of the season? And why would anyone blame Tomori just for the sake of it? If anything, I’ve had more hopes for him than for any of our other CBs, because he was a starter during the scudetto marathon. The problem remains the same, he simply isn’t the same player and fans denying the reality of what they see with their own eyes is not going to make him any better.

    2. Tomori is one them who delivered the Scudetto so that earns him whatever the opposite of the benefit of the doubt is.

      1. You’re right. World Class. Starter for life, like Bruno N’Gotty, Guly, Federico Giunti, Luigi Sala and Domenico Morfeo. They didn’t win any more trophies because they didn’t feel like it. Too good to care.

  8. To those who complained of RLC being subbed out at halftime rather than Reijnders: Fonseca has explained that RLC complained of an injury at HT so he had to yank him out.

  9. Great win, great result. Tomori score should be higher, don’t think he had a bad game. None of our players. did. Before anyone starts to write Sassoulo off, they are pretty much the level of Lecce, Monza, ect … Scoring four goals in 20 minutes is not easy against anyone.

And yes, Reijnders is amazing. Absolutely breathtaking

  10. Although this was Sassuolo and not even their strongest first eleven, it’s a nice win to build confidence. Also, good display from certain bench players. Reijnders is finding his ground and plays better with each game. But I still want to see him as a proper mezzala in 433 with even more freedom to roam. He lacks defensive characteristics to play a pivot and every team easily outplays us in midfield. Even Sassuolo came close to our goal on many occasions.

Anyway, keep up the good work but keep your feet on the ground. There are many matches to be played until NY with Atalanta approaching.

Don’t let your guard down now lads! Forza Milan

  11. A very enjoyable, and relaxing win, and great to see Calabria rolling back the years and playing like, erm, a 27 year old.

  12. Liberalli played with the U19 same day with the senior team, that why he wasn’t called.
Zeroli is injured that why he wasn’t called to the first team

  13. Team played well over all, always scary to see Sassoulo as a opponent for us. And hopefully we can start get some consistancy going.
I’m very happy to see Leao improve the way he have the last 3 games, even tho he had a scary moment in front of his own goal he have been switched on lately, less walking around watching his own toes.

  14. Haha, Fofana 6…if I had to guess, that is the 10th 6th has gotten for a below-average game. Musah came on. How are they given the same score? One player was better defensively (0 players dribbled passed, won more of his duels), passing the ball better (4 balls into the final 3rd, perfect on long balls, was dispossessed 0 times compared to 2 from Fofana…its fine to say Fofana played well when he has a good game, but let’s give players their due…Musah was better…everywhere in this game
