Player Ratings: Juventus 1-2 AC Milan – Musah sends message; Theo flop

AC Milan secured a ticket in the final of the Supercoppa Italiana thanks to a quick turnaround against Juventus on Friday evening. The substitutions made the difference and below are the player ratings for Sergio Conceicao’s side.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): He managed to get a hand on the ball, but not to keep out the strike fully on the first goal. It was a very good shot by Yildiz, it must be said. The Frenchman also did well with his feet, especially in the second half.

Emerson Royal (6): He had quite a few good defensive interventions, but the main struggles were seen in the build-up (above all in the first half). It was a close call, but the Brazilian did well enough in the second half – both phases – to get a pass here.

Tomori (6): His positioning wasn’t great, which is perhaps understandable given the lack of playing time lately, and there was one chance in particular that could have been costly (Vlahovic got in ahead but fired wide). He did, however, manage to have some good interventions too and thus gets a pass here.

Thiaw (7 – MOTM): He was Milan’s best defender tonight, without a doubt, as the positioning was always spot on. He also covered several times for his teammates and was the one to drive forward and attempt the slightly more complicated passes. Another great game from him, in other words.

Hernandez (4.5): He needed to do a lot better on the goal. You could see him looking at the ball and clocking Yildiz’s run too late. The failed attempted interception just highlighted his poor positioning. In the second half, he missed an absolute sitter from close range and also had some other questionable moments. He was somewhat involved in the penalty won after improving, but this was still a night to forget for him.

Bennacer (5): Too many touches on the ball, sloppy and not fully aware of his surroundings. All normal symptoms for a player who isn’t in match fitness, and unfortunately this was highlighted by the Algerian this evening. His replacement in the second half showed how to do the job.

Fofana (5.5): It was a positive start to the game for him but he then struggled a bit, certainly not having the same impact in the build-up and having little success with his shots in the final third.

Reijnders (5.5): He wasn’t best friends with the ball this evening, making a lot of technical errors, and this hurt his creativity a lot in the final third. Hopefully just a one-off poor game from him, we know he can do so much better.

Pulisic (6.5): Up until he won the penalty, he had been pretty poor to tell the truth and it wouldn’t have been surprising to see him subbed off. He also got a bit lucky with the penalty strike, BUT it got the job done and helped turn the game around. Still, he could have been way more impactful earlier on.

Morata (6): It’s a performance that some might consider poor, but he had a hand in all of Milan’s dangerous chances today. He set up Theo for the sitter he missed, then nearly scored himself after a nice move and combined with Musah for the winning goal.

Jimenez (5.5): It wasn’t his fault, really, but he struggled to have an impact on the game and when he did get the chance to cross, the delivery wasn’t exactly the best.

Substitutes

Musah (7): He was tremendous off the bench and would have got the MOTM if it wasn’t for Thiaw’s commanding display at the back. It was a huge difference compared to Bennacer and although the goal was a bit lucky, he made things happen on the ball. Then, when moved to the right-back spot, he was ice cold and handled the duels perfectly.

Abraham (7): The Englishman entered with the right attitude, lighting a fire up front for Milan, and showcased his skill with a great counter-attacking move (which deserved more, Pulisic’s effort was saved).

Gabbia (6.5): He saved a goal at the end with a great block on Gatti, so that alone means he deserves a rating.

Terracciano (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

  1. Never seen a player with Pulisic’s sense of timing to turn a game around. You can think he’s totally uninvolved, then he takes advantage of that ONE opportunity and capitalizes on it. Amazing.

    1. Oh, and continuing to show his consistent long-time anti-Pulisic bias, this writer emphasizes mostly the negative…. damning him with faint praise.
Pulisic played both sides of the ball and his defense may have prevented the tie.

      1. It really hurts this guy to give Pulisic a good rating. Even when he has to he spends most of his time pointing out the negative. Sure he only ran more than anyone on the pitch, setup Reijnders for a nice chance on goal, drew the penalty, scored the penalty… Other than all that, he was pretty poor. OK.

        1. LOL, I couldn’t agree more. Maybe the hatred for Puli is because he’s American and given that Milan fans are upset at the American owner, Puli gets prejudiced against. He is clearly Milan’s best current player, and yes, he was instrumental today despite being just back from injury. With him back, we beat Juve and that’s Juve’s very FIRST loss to an Italian team under Motta. We probably wouldn’t have won without Pulisic. Still, he gets negative words by the official rater here. Unbelievable.

      2. Agree. His bias is actually ridiculous. The whole team struggled in 1H. So many times he gets in spots but teammates fail to see him.

      1. Prvý polčas zmätok druhý polčas šťastie na konci VYHRA ale zmenau bolo vidieť nový tréner chce vyhrávať a to musia chcieť aj hráči a nie len brat peniaze FORZa MILAN

  2. Musah was amazing, but man I don’t know what really happened to Theo, I know all the problems, and accusation in his personal life, but to be just a shadow of himself so fast, it’s sad to see him like this, I hope with the new couch he can rediscovered himself.

  3. Good win. Just a couple of American boys saving Milan again.
Looked terrible in the first half. Much better in the second. Musah coming on for Bennacer changed the game.
Theo continues to be the worst LB in Serie A, possibly the world. Can’t blame Fonseca for his performances anymore.
One thing I didn’t like was the corners. It’s something Milan has actually done pretty well this year with Pulisic taking the corners. Now he’s not taking them for some reason and they were doing those totally useless short corners. I hope that changes. Not great football but good effort and a good result.

    1. Hyperbole much, the worst left back in the world?! You watched every left back in the world to make that conclusion?

He’s clearly not with it this year straight off the World Cup and into the team, not getting on with Fonseca and we’ve missed the opportunities to gain most from his sale and we messed up letting Kerkez go on the cheap who would be a perfect replacement – so I agree we’re not in a great position with Theo right now, but to say the worst in the world just undermines any point.

  4. Unfortunately most players were off tonight. Fortunately Milan still won. Coach change, players coming back from injury, Theo stinking all probably played a part in that. Even though Pulisic had a bad game for his standard, in my opinion, he ran farther than anyone and his work rate(winning the pen and converting it) saved Milan. Not sure why they didn’t hire Conceicao at the beginning of the season but I like his tactics and the players seem motivated so hopefully Milan will play better against Inter.

  5. Your reviews of Pulisic often go something like this-“ He didn’t really show us a lot, except for that little moment that helped propel us to victory”.

    1. It was brilliant to get the touch in there, I agree, but such a poor foul by Locatelli and the penalty was straight up bad. That being said, as you have rightfully pointed out, it helped turn around the game and that’s also why he got a higher rating than most 🙂 But rewatch the game and you can see he wasn’t happy with himself either before then 😉

      1. The point I’m trying to make is that he comes up clutch consistently. Therefore terrific players can have a relatively poor game and still make a huge difference. If all our players had poor games and made a single high-level contribution per game, then we’d never lose.

        1. That is true and it’s also literally the definition of Leao’s game. Some people don’t understand the value in that though.

        2. And so a player that is almost useless for 60 minutes out of 90 is supposed to get a 9 or 10? He played for 5.5-6 apart from the 10 minutes.

      2. The penalty was poorly placed but it was a very strong shot so that Di Gregorio couldn’t stop it. No Jorginho-style little run, little stop, weak shot. Puli has NEVER missed a PK in his entire professional career. 100%. And Puli is just back from injury, but despite that, he ran like crazy all over the place and even thwarted some offensive plays by Juve. No, he deserves a lot better than what you gave him. For a player who come back from injury and do that in a semifinal, it’s actually extraordinary.

        1. Great win against Juve only that important. I read here comments many of you guys not Milan fan at all. Call our players Americans only idiots can do that. We win and only that important

      3. I agree. Pulisic was off his game today and I bet he would agree with that. Probably partly because he just came back from injury. But great players like him can still be the most decisive player on the pitch even when they are having an off game.

      4. “He wasn’t happy with himself either” … sorry Isak that is weak sauce.

Players like Puli, Reijnders etc are never satisfied. It’s why they make the big bucks. They are dialed in on doing better every touch. Theo is what it looks like when immense talent loses that drive.

The ratings aren’t to judge how a player feels about himself. The are to judge his performance against expectations. Puli set up Reijnders beautifully and Tiji missed. Puli ran 12km. Much of that was covering a recovering Benny and a tragic Emerson. He chose to go high down the middle on the pen and smashed it past Di Gregorio. You will see him take a great chance saved only by Di Gregorios trailing foot (what a save)

Watch the game again and you will see Puli open in the channels but getting missed. You will see him charging the net on shot attempts to clean up a spill that doesn’t happen, but his effort is there nonetheless. You have in the past called this lucky. Man, hard work makes luck. You will see him make a poor pass and work his butt off to cover it. You will see that after 70 min of such work he still turned it up to match what Musah and Tammy bought.

I agree Thiaw was MOTM. I agree Musah was a close second. I agree with your score based on the rating criteria.

It is the damning with faint phrase in your words that is getting you the reaction here. Seriously take another look at the total game.

Personally Puli is who I want influencing Jimenez, Camarda, Etc. Don’t you?A

  6. I like the shape of the team in this 433 and transition to 442 was also smooth. Whole team worked their arses off it was evident.

Sergio has character and grinta and I’m sure it’ll rub on the players as well. Nice win for the boss and a big one too. Looking forward to see more.

  7. A weak performance for both teams. Milan were not convincing at all. Yes, they won, but because of 2 silly errors from Juve players. Without Locatelli giving a penalty away and that dumb Gatti own goal, Milan did not have the idea on how to turn the tables.
IMO, the only winner tonight is Sergio, who apparently knew how to push the players at half time to fight hard in the second half. He has a lot of work to do, but it is his early days, so he can’t be blamed for the weak performance the players had.

    1. First of all and as per usual who the fck asked you
Secondly, speaking of weak performance, y’all barely handled Atalanta who played their second string team and really couldn’t handle them when their starters came on. Scalvini was a midfielder lol. If wasn’t for that second goal, Inter would hv been in big trouble.
At least our game was entertaining.

        1. But he is spot on! We saw, as expected, nothing new from Milan except of what we so evidently were lacking, a fighting spirit. And that might be comming with a very loud guy on the sidelines.

  8. Even though it was a lucky win it was deserved because Milan was the better of the 2 teams.
In the first half Milan was very sloppy in possession. Misplaced pass after Misplaced passes. Also the players were in each other’s way in many occasions, occupying the same spaces on the pitch.
Bennacer worked hard but he made more passes to Juventus players than to Milan’s. Milan became more direct after he was subbed off for Musah.
Not a pretty performance but they showed character.
Inter will be the real test, since Juventus isn’t really any better than Milan.
    Good start for Conceição

  9. Agree. Pulisic was given MOTM trophy after the game by Serie A.

Not sure how Thiaw out points Pulisic for MOTM here, even as Thiaw played a solid game.

Musah was a Moose. Guessing he’s in the XI vs Inter.

  10. This match went as well as expected, considering it was only a few days after a new coach took over. We weren’t brilliant but two things it immediately was obvious we were doing good were the aggressive press and the direct play which is suited to this Milan. The team was compact, too. So those were good signs early on from Conceicao’s team. Then Juve were understandably more prepared and took control for long periods. They played slightly better. We managed to turn it around in the second half and the change to 4-4-2 definitely helped but mostly I thought Motta self-sabotaged with his changes. As soon as he took off Vlahovic and Mbangula for Gonzalez and Cambiaso I knew he’s messed up. He ruined his team’s shape and killed their rhythm with those weird decisions.

All in all, good first match. Conceicao and his ideas are far more suited to Milan and are a huge upgrade to Fonseca and his style of play, which could never work for Milan with these players.

Now I used to watch a lot of matches from Conceicao’s Porto back in the day and one thing to keep an eye on is the odd game where the aggressive press and high defense line goes wrong. The occasional red card was not an unusual thing for his team and a match or two could end up with a rather high scoreline loss.

Another thing worth mentioning is the return of Leao and his lack of work rate which is not ideal for Conceicao’s football at all, unlike Jimenez. We should see how they work it out because Leao is our crucial player and simply can’t sit out.

Lastly, a shout-out to Pulisic. Even though it was not his best day by his own standards (he won PotM anyway), he ran more than any other player from the two teams combined. A real player with a heart of a lion.

  11. Regarding Theo, the damage that Fonseca has done to him as one of our best by far outweighs anything good he’s done, which can be summarized in two wins against Inter and Real Madrid. He killed his confidence and form but I saw good signs from him in the second half, where he played better when he pushed forward more and we could see traces of the old Theo. He’ll be back.

    1. I see there are still people that think that Theo is bad because of Fonseca.
Theo doesn’t lack confidence but ability to defend, read the play and anticipate on the defensive end, and he lacks IQ offensively, because he holds on to the ball when he is supposed to pass. Reijnders is wide open in the penalty area prior to the penalty, and Theo instead of passing was going to run towards the goal in traffic.
I wish SempreMilan had a section specifically for player ratings from all the games from the previous season or 2 so people can actually go and check that everything that is said about Theo this season was said about him last year. The only differences is that Fonseca benched his ass while Pioli was cuddling him.
Some continue to look for excuses and scapegoats. Maldini absence affects Theo, Fonseca ruined Theo, etc.
He was never good at defending and he never will be, doesn’t matter the coach, the director, the club or his salary.
If he was as good as people think he is, some of these rich clubs would have already bought him, especially since we are constantly told how Milan would sell anyone. Yet he is still here and still can’t defend a statue.

        1. Perhaps you should do some independent thinking.
I don’t concern myself with players personal lives. I Couldn’t care less about Theo’s personal life issues especially since they are not health or bad luck related but they are because of his own stupidity and poor character.

          1. Well when we are talking about a players complete loss of form it is very relevant. Especially when such issues threaten his very career

      1. Agree.
The first major round of excuses was “he is missing Maldini’s guidance.”

If he was good at defending then Real would have taken him back. Like they did Diaz and presume they will with JImenez.

Theo would be best used with a back 3 as a WB. But Leao can then only play if we use 343.

      2. I stopped reading when I reached the second sentence. You’ve been spewing nonsense in this website for years. Weren’t you the one who was always saying Tonali is a horrible midfielder?!

        1. Nope, i was the one that said that Tonali is a degenerate gambler whose best quality as a Milan player was growing up a Milan fan.
BTW, did Theo miss that sitter in the 2nd half because of lack of confidence from Fonseca coaching or is it because after 20+ years of playing football, he still doesn’t have the ability to do anything with his right foot.?
That must be nonsense as well.

          1. Yes even more nonsense. Theo is going through a rough patch but his stats and numbers are there for all to see. The talent is clear for any one who is not a fool to see. He even played center-back for more than a few matches and got more than a passing grade.

If Tammy Abraham as a trained striker can continuously miss tap-ins with both legs and his head, Theo on a bad form can miss with his weaker foot, too yeah.

Go find another left-back with his number of goals and assists playing in the top leagues then come back and complain about his inability to score a goal.

          2. Z, you can’t even write a non PMS comment and you’re writing about Theo not playing with his right foot. 😂😂😂

  12. Gabbia-Thiaw partnership has been tested and trusted.Best back four for milan:Jemenez(Terraciano)-Thiaw-Gabbia-Emerson.The coach should use this so that he will do well for this job.

  13. Guys, we have a head coach now. What a difference! It was clear that Conceição was able to see the first half deficiencies and correct them with subs and tactical guidance. Just look at the first half stats like shots, shots on goal, and expected goals (2, 0, 0.something) and second half (9, 3, 1.5). He took out the players who were underperforming and brought in players who made a difference. And this, after only 3 days in charge. Wow. Mister Conceição, 7.5

Maignan – 6.5. Some blame for the near-post goal but it was a great shot; then had a good save, made a pass for the first goal, cooled the game, was an efficient captain.

Emerson – weak first half, much improved in second half, gets a pass, barely. 6

Tomori – one dangerous ball lost that fortunately Vlahovic did not convert; otherwise, energized, gritty. Gets a pass. 6

Thiaw – Phenomenal. Solid all the time. Prevented two goals for Juve. 7.5

Theo. Oh my God. Big fail in Juve’s goal and missed an incredible sitter. Did have a couple of good moves towards the end of the game but they are not enough to give him a pass. Milan’s worst player. 4.5

Fofana – overextended in first half due to Bennacer’s poor physical form, so, Fofana couldn’t do much and did make some mistakes. Better in second half. Gets a pass. Would have had more than a pass if he didn’t had to compensate for Bennacer. 6

Bennacer – 5. Tried hard but obviously still way out of physical shape. That was Conceição’s only mistaken decision. Shouldn’t have started in a semifinal against Juve. He needs to be eased in more slowly, in less important games.

Reijnders – not as good as in some other games. Had one very good shot that was barely saved by Di Gregorio but was less incisive. 6

Pulisic – He is ALWAYS getting some word of blame from the official rater here and he deserves better. He did try very hard to help with the defensive phase and did well on that, despite being just back from injury. He earned the PK and despite not placing the ball well, made a very powerful shot, so Di Gregorio couldn’t stop it. Pulisic continues to have 100% of conversion rate for PKs in his professional career. In a moment when Milan was starting to get a bit desperate, that conversion of a PK was essential. 7

Morata – a disappearing act in first half but then suddenly became important with some three good moves that actually helped with unlocking the game. For these, he deserves a bit more than a pass. 6.5

Jimenez – poor guy, he is young; he had been very good in Milan’s last 4 games but tonight it was a semifinal in front of the whole world and he obviously felt the pressure. Insufficient for a pass but understandable due to his youth. 5.5

Subs – Musah, co-MOTM with Thiaw. 7.5, transformed the game. His best half ever played for Milan. Wow. Maybe he is not a bust after all. Maybe it’s Conceição because Musah has always been confused under Pioli and under Fonseca, but today he seemed to know what to do. I’m hopeful that Conceição will finally unlock his potential. Go Musah!

Gabbia – Just for preventing a draw by Juve at minute 95, he deserves a 7

Terracciano – I didn’t see enough from him to get a vote. Still, clearly he didn’t make any mistakes, which is good and more than what we’ve seen from him in other games.

Abraham – Bothered Juve’s defense in a time when they had to pay attention to him instead of countering, and that was important to conserve the win. For this, like Gabbia who played for a short time but was essential in guaranteeing the win, I also grant to Abraham a slightly exaggerated 7.

Guys, see, Conceição made not one, not two, but three impactful substitutions that contributed to turning around the game and then keeping the advantage. That’s a proper head coach! Yay!

      1. Are you talking about my rating? I gave him a 7; I only granted to two other players a bigger rating out of the 15 players we used. Top 3 is good. And I praised Puli in my entire paragraph about him.

      2. Yes, he should get a 10 for a converted penalty and defending. What are you people smoking? 6.5 is top rating he can get, 7 is alraedy too much.

  14. Fun fact:

Sergio’s first match as a player in Italy was in the Super Coppa Italiana on August 29 1998, against Juventus. Lazio won thanks to a goal in the 94th minute by the Portuguese player.

  15. The rater’s negativity to Pulisic. That was a high and powerful pk. Hard to stop when the keeper is going to ground. Such anti-Pulisic bias.

  16. 1. As Conceicao said, winning is what matters. It was ugly but the team came out with fighting in the second half after a poor first half. Too early judge, regardless of what happens against Inter, but it was a positive result.
    2. Captain America! Pulisic was very rusty but his attitude, energy, and work rate was on point and made the difference tonight.
    3. Speaking of attitude, it’s contagious. Abraham, Musah, and Gabbia came on with a point to prove. Gabbia only had 10 minutes but was completely switched on to see us over the line.
    4. Thiaw was amazing tonight, and to think this management tried to sell him after a rough patch last season. He’s 23. There will be ups and downs. Patience is needed with these young players. I’m glad Tomori started. With all the transfer rumors, it’s a good signal that he has a place here.
    5. Our squad is poorly constructed. Our system changed with each substitution. Musah played central midfield, right midfield, and right back tonight. This is not sustainable and has been an issue all season. The January market could really help with this.

  17. Got home from work to see the last 30 minutes – what a blast! Musah was a proper midfield engine, like Kessie. Pressing was good in that time and Pulisic really came into his own when we needed it – pretty stoked we beat Juve – now for Inter 👌🏼

  18. See, there was poor positioning in first half with players a bit confused; after all, it’s a new coach. But then the coach saw that and corrected it. Look at what he said, it shows he is a real coach and good with tactics, I’m encouraged:

“Ho parlato alla squadra all’intervallo, non stavamo facendo ciò che avevamo preparato: pressing, senza palla, eravamo fuori posizione. Se non pensiamo tutti allo stesso modo in fase difensiva diventa difficile. Con la palla: poca attenzione a centrocampo, poca profondità sulle ali. Abbiamo parlato con i giocatori, abbiamo fatto vedere delle immagini.”

  19. I like what I see from the perspective of growth during the game and the kind of pressing. Wasn’t expecting a victory tbh but that can only help with the mentals and happiness which I’m all for. This game was just to test out and see for the new coach to implement his tactics and he gets a “free training game”. However if we pull it off against Inter I’d laugh 😂

  20. It’s the ideal system for Musah. He is best when the team is full-on pressing; he wins the ball often on his tackles and creates counters. One of the ways that gets Leao involved and can take the pressure off Reijnders in the middle…

  21. What can you say, horrible performance, Juve through it away and we got lucky.
Our 1st shot on target was over an hour in.

It’s good to have a lucky start for a new manager. He clearly has them hustling and he was trying things like putting Tomori on the right in 2nd half

Bennacer is trying hard but he needs game time to get sharp again. It’s positive to have him back.

Pulisic worked very hard for a man just back off injury. I expect he will improve

Thiaw is doing great and I am delighted he was not sold.
I hope Conceicao will be as tough on our management as he is on the players

I think Musah does best when coming on against tiring teams and the game more open. They can’t live with his athleticism, good attitude as always

    1. Pretty sure we went to a 541 when Gabbia came in. So Tomori was still a CB.

First half looked like we had a new coach and central mid who just came back from 4 months of injury and a surgery.

Second half looked like we had a new coach who set expectations and subs who rose to those expectations.

Nothing horrible in any of it except Theo looking like a broken man

      1. Well my eyes and the eyes of the commentators saw a team with no idea how to break down Juve and basically watched them play.

We got a penalty and an own goal, how lucky can you be when we couldn’t get a shot on target.

Of course we had lots of issues including those you mention. That doesn’t change the fact we were horrific and won purely by some good fortune.

Most importantly as I alluded to above there were signs of things changing for the better and I am optimistic about our new coach.

  22. Ratings were accurate. I think some of those subs should start over some of these starters. And Thiaw has really turned it around… many were calling for him to be sold. Musah should certainly be starting from this point forward.

I do like what I see. And a win to start off with Conceicao is fantastic.

  23. Laughable rating. Here is mine:

    Maignan: 6,5
    Emerson: 6,5
    Thiaw: 7
    Tomori: 5
    Theo: 4,5
    Reijnders: 5,5
    Bennacer: 5,5
    Fofana: 4,5
    Pulisic: 5,5
    Morata: 5
    Jimenez: 5,5

Only the alignment of the stars gave us the victory tonights, because qualitatively this was really bad.

      1. 6,5 for showing heart, and for being solid defensively.

What did Pulisic do? Lots of bad passes, and a half-good penalty, thats it.

    1. Buddy, I hope you were referring to your own ratings as laughable, because your list is ATROCIOUS. Emerson as the 2nd best on the pitch? You’re high as wiz khalifa

  24. Pulisic was the MOTM. He was a bit rusty and seemed a little off due to his injury but his work rate, passion and determination made him a nuisance to Juve. Also, he seems to always be there when we need him.

How about Tomori yelling at Theo to get back on defense after he missed that sitter? We need more of that from our boys.

      1. No, it is because he had 50% successful dribbles, 30% won duels, 80% passing acc, 0 crosses. I can go on, his stats show how good he was. The right back can’t prevent you from crossing or winning duels…He still deserved 6.5 because of the goal and actually trying. But that is it.

      1. He put a lot of power in it which is why the keeper didn’t save it. His pks for the USMNT have been better looking than his 2 this year for Milan. But so far he has never missed. Something like 12 for 12 I think.

  25. How Can you give pulisic so low? The stats shower he was the player that ran most km for the entire game around 12k. That work rate itself should give a solid 7. I dont understand why bennacer is so low to. He fits perfect in a 3 man midfield he was giving Milan time on the Ball made some mistakes but you could se the quality and leadership from him already from so Long time off.

  26. Hey y’all who said pulisic was Messi because it sounds like you expect as much every time he’s on the pitch. Got him for 20 M FCS. He’s the best clutch player on the team even though he’s just an American.
I’m grateful the team showed some balls and didn’t give up.Refreshing!

  27. Most of the game today Milan was reactive and needed a spark to get going. Conceicao’s hardest task will be to get Milan to play with a “spark” right from the get go.

Good subs from the coach too. No loyalties, not holding back. Some bold calls. Conceicao needs to get the boys believing in him ASAP, hopefully this win speeds up that process.

  28. They won the first half and we the second. They capitalized on Theo’s mistake and we made good on Locatelli’s. Musah/Gatti goal was the footballing Gods smiling on us and we move on to the final.

We had a good shape today just lacked execution.

  29. I didn’t watch the match. So Pulisic played on the left when we use 442 right? Musah on the right wing. Interesting. Stick with 442 or 433 please.

  30. Difficult to judge Conceicao from a terrible game. This Milan sucks, but the difference is when you have an elite player like Pulisic and the opposition has a complete waste of space called Locatelli. What a terrible player

  31. Since Cardinale started with his American campaign we have new American Fan‘s who doesnt have a clue what Football upps sorry „Soccer“ is about and when they try always to protect Pulisic as he is CR7 or Messi!? Calm down you need another 30 year‘s from now to understand what we the real fan‘s are talking about. After Cardinale will sell the club and Pulisic leave‘s you will leave with them, it‘s a bandwagon bunch of fan‘s, without offense it‘s just the reality.

    1. What if I showed up before Cardinale and Puli? Can I stay?

What if I think Puli is a great player this year and don’t think about his nationality?

What if I had to choose a player to influence Camarda, Jimenez, Liberali, Bartesaghi, Zeroli, etc? I’d chose Puli influence over anyone else in the team at this time.

Then I’d choose Gabbia who happens to be Italian. But not because he is Italian.

Both bring the lunch pail to work and work their full shift regardless of what is asked. Both are consummate pros.

Get off the American thing. America is two continents and dozens of countries. The US is where Puli is from. It is on one of those American continents. Folks from all the other countries get annoyed at being lumped in with us. You know like Argentina – the current world cup holders. You taking the piss from literally half the geographic world. Not a good look.

Also … Soccer … A word invented by the Brits who – it turns out – invented the game. It’s like criticizing the use of the word pasta when spaghetti is what is being served. Grow an argument brother. Pedantry is unbecoming.

Can we bring back Rino? At least he was good for a laugh while making the insult.

    2. Until Cardinale sells the club, you are owned by people who call football soccer, and your best player is a soccer player.
      No offense, just reality.
For your sake, hopefully you don’t have to wait 30 years for that to happen.
But you can continue chanting and putting stickers on light polls that you are not ‘Mericans.
Pulisic is by far Milan’s best player. Keep crying

    3. What the hell are you talking about? Pulisic is not Messi or CR7 but there is no doubt that he is currently Milan’s player with the highest number of seasonal goal participations (goals + assists; that’s a FACT, not opinion; 12 for Puli, a bit above the second and third who are Rafa and Tijjani) despite having been out injured or out exhausted from coming back from long international duty.

Puli’s quality, football intelligence, heart, dedication and work rate are recognized by any REAL Milan fan. You are spouting nonsense. And by the way, I’m Italian, and a lifelong Milan fan, so drop the silly idea that only bandwagon American fans like Pulisic.

And the fact that Pulisic is increasing the number of Milan supporters around the world is only good for AC Milan. Maybe these are not lifelong Milan fans like we are, but still, it’s a positive. The more fans Milan has, the better for the club.

Someone who says he is a real Milan fan but bashes our current best player, is not a real Milan fan. What did Pulisic do to deserve your hatred, other than trying his best to help AC Milan? Do you hate him just because he was born in the United States? By the way, Pulisic’s maternal grandmother is Italian born and raised.

And remember, Puli is a Champions League winner who scored in a Champions League final. What other current Milan player can say the same?

The clueless one here is you, not the fans who love Pulisic.

        1. Oops, you are right, sorry. Still, very significant to score and assist in the semis. Without Puli’s two goal participations in the semis, the aggregate semifinal score would have been 1-1 subject to PKs, so who knows if Chelsea would have made the final. And that semi was against a great Real Madrid that had just eliminated Liverpool.

The spirit of my point stands that no current Milan player can say that (a goal and an assist in the Champions League semifinals); I was just mistaken on when the goal participations happened.

      1. Which hatred? People are saying that you shouldn’t overrate players based on their previous games. It is pretty simple. Maybe he should get a 10 rating because he played in CL final 4 years ago? Or because his grandmother is Sicilian? He did not say Italian.

        1. No, he deserves a good rating for THIS game because he ran 12 Km (most for the game all two teams considered), worked very hard, helped with defense, then earned and converted a PK which was instrumental for our victory. By the way, the league officials granted to Pulisic the official Player of the Match award, so who is wrong, you or me? LOL.

Still, I didn’t even grant to him my highest rating. I granted him a 7 which is entirely fair. I ranked higher than him two other players with a 7.5, but Puli still did deserve to be recognized as a top 3 player for this match by me, and again, as the top one by the official league.

The fact that he was instrumental for Chelsea’s Champions League triumph was mentioned to demonstrate that he is a world-class player, and indeed he is one. Winning the Champions League is the top of the world for clubs. It is a towering accomplishment for anybody, let alone a player who contributed with not one, but two goal participations in the Champions League semifinals that year, which were fundamental to see his team through to the final (I did make a mistake on when his goal was, but he scored AND assisted in the semifinal legs and also played in the final).

His Italian heritage was mentioned not to give him a rating for this game, but to counter the xenophobe who was bashing Puli for being American. By the way, I made a tiny mistake in saying maternal grandmother. She was his paternal grandmother. Although Pulisic’s father uses the last name of his Croatian father, due to his Italian mother, Puli’s father has an Italian flag tattooed on his forearm. Mind you, an Italian flag, not a Sicilian flag.

OK, so now you’re racist against Sicilians? Me, I think (well, I don’t think, I know, given that they are officially and with full rights, Italian citizens) that Sicilians are Italians. If you think they aren’t, sorry, I won’t keep talking to a racist. Have a nice day.

          1. I agree with you. He deserves a 7 for being the difference for Milan and working his *** off. But it is true for his ability that this was one of his overall worst games this season. He mis placed passes and mis controlled the ball on numerous occasions which is unlike him. But to work like he did and to make the difference when it was needed after coming off a month long injury is why he deserves a 7. Also he almost scored in the final. His shot just barely missed.

    1. You again with this silly call “buy Jiminez”??? First of all, his name is Jimenez, not Jiminez. Second, he has ALREADY been bought by Milan, for 5 M Euro. The issue with Jimenez is not buying him which we have already done. The issue is that his contract includes a buy-back clause in favor of Real Madrid, and there is no “buy Jimenez” in rapport to that, because if Real is to decide to exercise that clause, there is strictly nothing that AC Milan can do, so yelling “buy Jiminez” is entirely misguided. Get informed.

On the other hand, I do agree with you that Jiminez is a good player that I wish we will keep (I root for Madrid not exercising their buy-back clause).

As for Theo, I’m as frustrated as anybody else with his poor performances and in my ratings I gave him the lowest rating of all Milan players for this game, but I sill hope that the new coach will fix whatever is going on with Theo. So I wouldn’t rush into selling him just yet. Let’s see what Conceição can do for Theo.

  32. I wan conceicao to start bench Royal an THEO for now and starting using jimenez and bartesaghi for right back an left back those two are hungry for success

    1. Honestly wouldn’t mind. Theo has been a straight liability al season, and Emerson is literally the worst player at the club

  33. Very poor game, Juve were much better 75% of the game… theo and bennacer played for a spot in serie B, royal should be in serie c with milan futuro, fofana was a negative surprise actually, but i trust the guy… pulisic and morata always great and motivated, abra i wish he had the skill to match his enthusiasm, thiaw was as good as he can be… and others barely average

Most of players are, i think, capable of more, but this management drama and circus surely reflects on everyones performance (for instance theo, forgot what he can do the second maldini was sacked)

    1. No, Juve were not much better 75% of the game. It was more like a 50-50 thing (or rather, slightly in our favor). They had a better first half; we had a better second half. They pounced on a mistake by Theo, we pounced on a mistake by Locatelli.

The stats for the full game show this equilibrium. Juve had 10 attempts, we had 11. Juve had 3 shots on target, we also had 3. They had 2 big chances, we had 3. They had 382 accurate passes with an 87% rate of completion; we had 393 with a 90% rate of completion. They had 51% ball possession, we had 49% (practically equal; one of the few things we were slightly below them by a negligible number). They had 5 corner kicks, we had 7. We won 51 duels (58%), they only won 37 (42%). They had only 2 players with a FotMob rating at or above 7, while we had a whooping 7 players with that (these ratings are objective algorithms based on a number of skills; not subjective judgment).

If anything, our global stats were BETTER than theirs; most notably, better passing, better win rate for duels, and way more players with high ratings.

Not to forget and most importantly, they scored only one goal while we scored two, LOL.

So where exactly is that 75%-25% dominance that you speak of? Did you miss watching the second half, when we did play better than they did?

As for Fofana, he was overextended in first half because his companion Bennacer is still far from ideal physical shape and Fofana had to compensate for that, which made him more erratic and more subject to errors. He did improve a lot in second half especially once Bennacer was subbed out and Fofana got more help. While overall Fofana wasn’t as brilliant as in other games, it’s very understandable that he was more stressed out due to a companion not in ideal shape.

  34. People talk about poor game and bash on Pulišić (a MOTM imo).

Conceicao had 2 days with his new team while Pulišić and Bennacer are coming from long lay off.

    And we won.

    So chill ffs!

    1. We’re playing against inter this monday, a team far superior to juve, so I don’t know how much we can chill ffs.
Of course, Conceição just inherited this team few days ago so he can’t prepare the team as well as he wants and some of our players are coming of injuries are a far removed from their best shapes while inter has been a fine tuning machine with the same coach for years now, but I still want us to win this game at any cost.

      1. It won’t be any shame if we lose to Inter on Monday. Like you said, they have had the same coach for years, and ours will have had the team for only 7 days.

Still, I’m feeling optimistic that Conceição will eventually fix our team. It seems rather clear that he makes good decisions and is better with tactics than Fonseca. Milan’s second half improvement is the hallmark of a good coach who can read the game, adapt, and change the game with his halftime instructions and subs.

See, many of us fans wanted Thiago Motta to be our coach… but Conceição outcoached him; Motta made a bad decision when he subbed out Vlahovic, while Conceição’s subs were impactful and changed the game. And Motta has had Juve for 6 months, while Conceição yesterday had had Milan for 4 days. That was impressive.

  35. I am of the opinion that Jimenez disrupts Hernandez’s entire game. The two don’t work on the same page as they are very similar in their actions. Jimenez is miles away from being an option on the left though. He has no vision and no game intelligence. He reacts far too hastily. Hernandez is slowed down by him as much as possible. You could see that very clearly yesterday. Jimenez was substituted and Hernandez got better. My next point is Bennacer. He’s not in shape yet and Musah did much better. I hope Conceicao has noticed these points. At least he brought Tomori back on. He is our best defender.

    1. Jimenez had been excellent for the previous 4 games, with MOTM, or co-MOTM-level performances. He is fast and dangerous; I disagree that he has no vision and no game intelligence. He is still very young and he is learning. Hell, he was in Serie C until a few games ago. In my opinion he is a good player with immense potential; it’s not for nothing that Real Madrid slapped a buy-back clause in the contract when they agreed to sell him to us; Ancelotti knows what he is doing and sees the potential.

In my opinion Jimenez is a better attacker than a defender (but so is Theo, or at least, used to be). Yes, I agree that Jimenez didn’t have a great game yesterday, but he had two excuses for being poor. One, it has surfaced now that he was sick with a fever throughout the game. Two, he is very young and despite his good league performances, it’s another thing to face a big rival on a semifinal in front of the whole world, and he likely felt the pressure and therefore was nervous and more prone to making mistakes. He is a kid; he is only human. I’m confident that he will be a big asset down the line, if hopefully Madrid do not exercise their buy-back clause. If they do, I will be disappointed.

As for being a replacement for Theo, if we consider Theo’s best seasons and not this putrid season he has been having, I agree with you and I don’t think that Jimenez is the right man for our LB, because, again, like Theo, he isn’t a great defender. Still, I think Jimenez will be very useful as he can play left wing and right wing; he can also play RB and LB but like I said, not ideally; still, having a flexible player is good for any coach.

Yes, Bennacer should be eased back in slowly and in less important games; hell, he was more than 4 months out and is really rusty. I thought that this was Conceição’s only mistake, having started Isma on a semifinal. But yes, most likely, Conceição has noticed his own mistake and will start Musah against Inter.

Tomori, I don’t know. He is capable of good games like yesterday’s, but after the Scudetto season, he hasn’t been the same; he’s been prone to costly mistakes, and even yesterday he made one that luckily Vlahovic failed to convert. Had Vlahovic scored on that mistake by Tomori, we’d have been in deep trouble. Tomori can be really sloppy and mistake-prone.

Thiaw seemed to be very mistake prone a while back but seems to be learning, as he has had several great games in a row. Also, don’t forget Gabbia. So, I’m not sure if Tomori still qualifies as our best defender.

There is no doubt though, that Tomori is better than Emerson Royal, and Conceição did get Tomori there as RB, so, maybe that should happen more often. We certainly need help for our weak RB spot.

  36. There were users above trying to ridicule people for giving a good rating to Christian Pulisic.

I granted him a 7. Guess what? Look at what professional journalists from the main Italian newspapers and football radio gave him:

    Corriere della Sera: 7
    Corriere dello Sport: 7
    La Repubblica: 7
    TMW: 7

    Haha. Who was right?
