Tuttosport: Questions asked about Maignan’s renewal after ‘various mistakes’

By all accounts, Mike Maignan’s renewal is about ready to be signed, but have AC Milan made an error with the figures?

The loss in Rotterdam can be attributed to a number of factors, but there is one standout reason – Mike Maignan’s error. It is a mistake that could be defining for a season, and whilst questions will be asked of others if Milan cannot overturn the deficit, the blame will go to the Frenchman.

As Tuttosport (via Milan News) write, this is not the first of its kind though, and this is where frustrations grow. Not only has the Frenchman been prone to errors previously, but they have also been costly.

For Maignan, we only have to look to this season to count numerous mistakes – look at Como and Cagliari for example. Now, on the verge of signing his ‘final big contract’, the report questions if the goalkeeper is really deserving of the figure.

In July, he will celebrate his 30th birthday, but he is still prone to rookie-like errors. Milan are in some ways holding onto the hope that the Maignan of the Scudetto season can be refound, but taking a €5 million per season gamble on this player is a huge risk, which the report questions.

  1. “taking a €5 million per season gamble on this player is a huge risk”

Nope. Buying a new GK would be a huge risk. We know what we get with MM16. The next Frenchie from Moncada’s 10 year old notebooks will flop. Mark my words.

    1. Good goalkeepers are not hard to find. It’s one of the easiest positions to scout for as the quality depends on the defense. Sell maignan, bring in a new goalie, focus spending on the Defense

  2. “Milan are in some ways holding onto the hope that the Maignan of the Scudetto season can be refound.”

If I had a € for every comment that says that if Milan player X can return to his scudetto form, I’ll be a rich man now.

Goalkeeper is the easiest position to replace in a team. Unless the Goalkeeper is the undisputed leader of the team a la Buffon or Neuer, he can be easily replaced.
Maignan isn’t that. The only thing that has changed since he has become Milan captain is that the team is constantly late to come out for the start of the 2nd half.
There are plenty good Goalkeepers especially in Italy.

  3. I love Mike but this many gaffs are just not acceptable at this level. As Z says above, finding a great goal keeper would be easy – we come up against one practically every time we play one of these non-entity teams – but I’d be open to keeping him at a reduced figure from the proposed renewal.. especially considering it’s only a matter of time before he’s on crutches again…

    1. For example, Svilar from Roma is a top goalkeeper, would cost under 30M€. If they can get 60M for Maignan from PSG it should be a no brainer.

  4. Take him out for a bit and play Torriani.
Same with Hernandez and play an academy product.
The youngsters will value their position more.

  5. Just reading Ac Milan accepted 50 million from Como for Hernandez.
All Milan stars are in such bad shape. Should Milan keep Hernandez, Mike, Tomori?
If they don’t reach UCL next year why wouldn’t club sell stars ?

What’s the point of paying Hernandez 7 mill per year, Mike 5 mill if they play average ?

Who would you bring if you sell Hernandez and Maignan? For Tomori situation is more or less easy…

Next season is crucial for Red Bird. That’s first season that they are going to lose much money.

    1. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Players playing badly because they’re not deemed important and this management won’t hesitate to sell them should an offer arrive. I mean I wouldn’t want to play for the clowns who are willing to sell me to Como or Ibra manipulates me to find a new club asap. No one is safe from the capital leeches here.
