Mike Maignan’s contract has been discussed heavily in the past 18 months, and negotiations have been continuing with AC Milan for some time, but there is a problem.
There is no denying that Maignan is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and this is why Milan fight regularly to keep the Frenchman at the club. However, there is a small problem that plagues the idea somewhat.
As Calciomercato states, the goalkeeper of the Rossoneri’s 19th Scudetto is a ‘distant memory’, and whilst this may be slightly harsh, the idea remains true. Whilst Maignan is still a top goalkeeper, his level has almost certainly dropped from what it may have once been, causing the report to question if he is worth his ‘renewal value’.
Like with all of the Diavolo’s stars, it boils down to consistency, or a lack thereof – a painful admission to be making again. Last night against Feyenoord, we saw the latest installation of inconsistency just after he had gotten his first clean sheet in almost two months.
On his Instagram story, the goalkeeper admitted that it was a ‘bad day at the office’ and even displayed that he needs to reflect on it, but the report suggests he is not the only one needing a period of reflection.
As it stands, the Rossoneri are preparing a big contract for the star, but questions about the errors must be asked. Then, once an answer is found, everyone can work together to ‘return to super’ which Maignan only wants to do with Milan.
It’s not hard to find a good goalkeeper. That’s how we found Maignan to replace Dunnarumma. Even Taturusanu performed well when he played, and even had a clean sheet against Inter at one point.
It’s time to replace Maignan. In the end it is all about the Defense. That is where the money should be spent.
It is not everything in the sale.
There are 4 to 6 players that played in scudetto season… all others are gone.
So this is more of Red Birds problem. They make hell of the mess in locker room.
And this is why players are unmotivated yet.
When they change philosophy, the result will come. Even Elliott had excellent results with so many unknown players.
What does this drivel you spewed has anything to do with Maignan letting in goals that an amateur goalkeeper will save?
What does that have to do with the philosophy of the club?
Are they telling him to let those weak shots in?
Calm down. So the goalkeeper made a blunder. Fine. Where were your strikers? Are games not won when you score goals? or you hoping for a goalless draw?
He made around 10 blunders since he is at Milan. And was injured quite a lot. So if someone came with 60M that should be the easiest yes ever. There are better goalkeepers in Italy that you can get for 1/3 of that price.
Yeah the whole thing started to go wrong, was when they fired Maldini no more REAL LEADERS at Milanelo or a point of reference
Mike has some sort of a psychological handicap when it comes to his near post. I just don’t get it. For years. This isn’t the first time.
Lol ahahahahahah
Maignan has 107 saves this season, inter milan keeper has 87 saves….why would maignan need to grow clearly stats show the players in front of him let him down….he made a mistake yes but come on, this is my problem with milan we keep pointing fingers…why did we not sign a center back of quality?, why did we change two coaches and get same results?….stop using maignan as a scapegoat, fix the real issues…Conte was available as a coach
Ye its always the coach never the players (i am not talking about maignan)
1. The kit manager mistakenly washed the squads socks with Theo’s hair dye.
2. If this gig doesn’t work out for Conceição he can always become a jacket model, he changed his a couple of times during the match.
3. João Felix might perform better in the UFC, he had a devastating right knee to the head of Feyenoord’s keeper.
4. The weather gods blessed Mike with a shower because his performance stunk.
5. Santiago Gimenez thought he still played for Feyenoord because he was excellent in blunting our attack.
lol 5 truths hard to swallow
Maignan is so overrated.
You can measure how overrated he is by counting all of the articles like this that have been produced in the 2.5 seasons since the seasons that won him his reputation.
It’s likely also part of the hangover the game is experiencing related to keepers who are good with their feet. It is almost entirely irrelevant except to the extent that it causes coaches to over look shot stoppers who don’t consistently make the same mistakes leading directly to goals.
But you’ve been telling us for the last few weeks and months that his renewal was all agreed… and now it isn’t? I’m shocked, shocked I tell you.
I was looking mikes number up on fbref hoping to be comforted that the errors look worse than they are but unfortunately the advanced stats for his shot stopping numbers are really poor we are talking 16th and bottom 1 percentile 😬. That really bad and his ball playing skills don’t make up for it. I don’t think they can renew him with a raise for numbers that bad. It kinda breaks my heart to see that. I’m really a fan of him
As a Milan site, you can work on the tittle… Its not about f renewal value, its about Milan not letting in goals!
Time to let Torriani cook?
This is a bit hard to do given Torriani’s age. He is still very young and inexperienced. Even his muscle mass is very meager; he needs to bulk up. I think Torriani has a great future. He has good reflexes and is calm and composed, but to rely on someone his age to be the number one goalkeeper for one of the most important clubs in the world, is too much responsibility and might ruin the kid’s development.
Casillas was that young when RM thrust him into the big time and he never disappointed. Being young is not a bad thing, he needs game time in matches like the Coppa Italia to gain the necessary experience
Mike Maignan is terrible around the near post. He regularly eats howlers when the opponent’s forward targets that region of his goal.
I find it hard to call someone a world class goalkeeper when he has such a damaging shortcoming which regularly causes the team to drop points.
Sure, he also keeps the team in games by producing several crucial saves, but he’s been very irregular. He has great games and horrible games.
A truly world class goalkeeper is almost always good. I no longer believe this to be the case for Mike Maignan.
Di Gregorio, for example, is a better goalkeeper than Mike Maignan. It is very hard to score against him and game in, game out, he performs well.
At this point, if the club were to choose to refrain from renewing Mike’s contract and instead, preferred to shop around for a more consistent goalkeeper, I wouldn’t be sad. I’m tired of seeing these soft goals that he keeps eating.
Di Gregorio was beat at the near post by PSV two days ago.
Ok let’s not get carried away. Di Gregorio is not half as good as Mike. And Mike is not a world class keeper for some time… let’s be real. And the blame is not only on CBs…. after the goal Mike barely used his hands
Typical media trying to chantage Mike again.
If he saves us 100 times, they compliment him, one mistake and all of sudden, ‘he needs to prove his salary request’ lol
SHOW ME 1 KEEPER WHO DOESN’T MAKE A SINGLE MISTAKE IN HIS WHOLE CAREER! SHOW ME 1 PERFECT KEEPER. I pay to buy that keeper. But if he conceeds, you journalists pay that money, can these useless journalists bet on this?
Yep, he does easy mistakes here and there (like all his colleagues), but he still is one of the best and considered as such by the whole football community, apart from obviously Milan’s most devoted fans. I cannot comprehend how easily you dismiss our players. Not to mention how important he is for the team as the true leader of the squad and now deservedly our captain.
Because you can get a better goalkeeper for half the price, even less. Maignan has dropped a lot, so if someone came with 60M I’d sell him. I’d even take 30M and Donnarumma since PSG might offer it. He is a much better shot stopper and I don’t think feelings should have a say in who you get.
The sad thing is that even Tatarusanu would have saved the Paixao shot…
Maignan is still one of the best in the world. Mistakes are part of the game, let the other players prove their worth too. Same situation MU had with De Gea, replaced him and still some wish he never left. Lets keep supporting Maignan he plays for the club we support.
