Player Ratings: Chelsea 3-0 AC Milan – Dest disaster; few positives

By Isak Möller -

It was a disappointing Champions League evening for AC Milan as they lost 3-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Several players struggled for the Rossoneri and down below are the player ratings.

Starting XI

Tatarusanu (5.5): You can’t really fault him on any of the goals, so let’s just make that clear from the start. However, he needs to be more available in play and the play with his feet must improve, hence the rating.

Dest (4.5): It’s becoming clear that he really isn’t up to the standard of Milan, and he will have to improve quickly otherwise the next few games will be painful for Milan. He just doesn’t add anything, while making many mistakes.

Kalulu (6): One of the best Milan players on the field today with a rating of 6 and that says a lot. He did make a slight mistake on the third goal, but other than that he actually saved the Rossoneri on a few occasions.

Tomori (5): He made a schoolboy error on the second goal and that was dire for Milan, who then were trying to get back into the game. Not something we’re used to seeing from him.

Ballo-Toure (5): He struggled on many occasions, including the third goal (handoff with Tomori didn’t work) and his attacking contribution was next to zero. That being said, not a total total disaster, but ultimately fatal.

Bennacer (5.5): He tried hard until he was subbed of by Pioli but under pressure he didn’t quite manage himself as well as you would have hoped. The vertical balls he’s so good at, for whatever reason, were missing.

Tonali (5.5): Just like with Bennacer, the progress of the game didn’t really allow them to reach their highest standards, that’s just a fact. The spirit wasn’t lacking, but the decisive balls were.

Krunic (5): He was a bit sloppy in possession this evening and made a huge mistake in the first half, sending the ball high over the bar from very close range. It could have changed the game for Milan.

De Ketelaere (5): Just like the Bosnian, he also had a very good chance (the shot before) and he simply didn’t do a good enough job with it. And he struggled to impose himself in the game as well.

Leao (6): He tried, tried, and then he tried a little more because his teammates didn’t really do much up front. Could he have done better? By his standards, probably, but also he did what he could do.

Giroud (5): Non-existent for most of the game and he didn’t do a good enough job with the pressing. Disappointing return to Stamford Bridge for him.

Substitutes

Gabbia (6): He did what you would expect him to do against a team that had switched off at that point. A few good challenges, nothing spectacular.

Rebic (5.5): He added energy to whatever attack was left but ultimately had a small impact on the game.

Pobega (N/A): We didn’t see enough of him.

Origi (N/A): We didn’t see enough of him.

Brahim (6): Very good display off the bench from the Spaniard who actually succeeded with many things.

  1. Bennacer 5.5? LOL did u even watch the same match? Missed every one on one; invisible all around; lost all dribbles and duels; misplaced passes everywhere; costed us 2 goals

    1. Somehow Benny keeps repeating the same mistake on the UCL stage. Just like last season where he often held off ball for too long, lost it, and costed us. UCL has different intensity than Serie A, you can’t expect a cheap foul, that he (and all other Milan players) should realize.

      1. Absolutely last season in UCL Bennacer cost Milan points in the away game vs Liverpool and in both games vs Porto.
He caused a penalty early in the game and assisted on Liverpool’s winning goal.
In both Porto games he got bullied off the ball that led to Porto dcoring goals.
But we can’t talk about it because according to some of our fans he is the best midfielder in Italy.
SMS has 3 goals and 5 assists in 8 games but according to a delusional part of our fan base Bennacer is better than him

    2. True! Bennacer is a great player but tonight he was just bad, really bad. He deserves no more than a 4.
Ballo also is about there as well, he was constantly a liability.
Tata is worst that it seems, his passing costs a lot.
BTW many other players deserve lower score tonight. Other than Leao, it’s hard to give a score more than 5 to anyone.

    3. I watched him and he didn’t really want to pass to Dest or Ballo-Toure, so he ran around looking for someone who isn’t a liability, and became one himself. Milan plays a lot through LB and a bit less through RB, but these 2 guys we have are useless in defense and attack. It is like having 1 player less when those 2 play.

  2. No one deserves more than a 4 except for Leao. This is more than just injuries. This is a deeper problem for this team. We are simply not good enough, and our manager is a clown.

  3. Disgusting display all around against a very weak Chelsea team, Pioli is an absolute joke of a manager thinking a player like Krunic is actually good enough to play for Milan let alone in the CL, Ballo has to go he’s not Milan worthy. Just pay Leao what he’s asking for, he’s the only player with the guts to take someone on in our team.

  4. It was so bad,it s bergamo’s massacre all over again. Why our first touch is like ass?CDK is overrated, leao is bullied by the 39 years old thiago silva, defender almost not exist.why we always looked like serie B when play in england?

    1. Bc they press more and don’t give time to anyone, maybe I’m the only one but I really don’t like CDK, for my feeling he gets bullied every dual he is in, need to be harder and stronger now, it’s no more Belgian league anymore

      1. Yeah too slow in my opion and doesnt drop back enough to carry the ball and create something. Very average. Hopefully he gets better since he is young and all.

        1. On this site there is actually an article how cdk create has the most key passes! so the pas before the assist the pass that create the chance not only the most in serie a but the most with al the league’s combined

  5. It’s remarkable at how bad we’ve looked since the start of the season, especially our defense. Absolute disaster class, what were they thinking bringing in Dest, Ballo-Toure had to be sold Galatasaray or whoever in Turkey wanted him. If we looked this bad against Chelsea, how are we going to do against a resurgent Juventus, not to mention Pioli was very naive with his decision to play Krunic as a RW against Chelsea, this called for a change of formation, we should never have played a 4-2-3-1. This match made me extremely angry and disappointed in Pioli especially. This is the worst I’ve seen us play since the 4-0 loss to Atalanta.

  6. All these players who want to demand so much money from milan and when in Europe they break down like this?
Bennacer doesn’t deserve 5.5. Maybe a 3 because he was awful tonight.
You can’t blame giroud either because service was nonexistent.
The general body language was off today also.
These players are tired too. Tomori needs some rest but he won’t get that will all these injuries.
Our right wing is not being addressed also. Now both right wingers are injured and we have no good replacement.
Hopefully at San siro things go better and more starters return

    1. Can’t blame Giroud? Dude is useless, he doesn’t win areal duels against defenders of his size or higher, makes a lot of stupid fouls and has a goal record of 1 goal per 2+ matches. When people write that he scores important goals, how many did he really score that weren’t served to him by the team? 1 or 2 at Milan. I mean any wooden pole you put in the opposition area can divert the ball Leao serves on a platter, doesn’t make it a good player.

  7. On the first goal, Silva was free for the prior two headers. On the third corner, Silva still got the ball over Giroud. Goal mouth scramble, it is what it is. Up to that point I thought it was even and then everything went disastrously.
The second goal was mostly Tomori (mainly) as he got caught ball watching and missed his clearance completely, Fode should have closed down better and faster. But as well the play started with poor play from Dest.
Third goal was Tatarusanu so I’m not sure how his rating says he couldn’t be faulted for any goal. He got beaten near post and to me should have done better. Fode got sorely beaten due to lack of marking the right player but it started with a poor pass from Kalulu.

All in all, we just weren’t up to the pace of the game when Chelsea had the ball. And also we’re missing the whole right side, a proper CDM, and a good goalkeeper. But at the same time CDK and the attack just didn’t click

    1. I would also add that Tatarusanu could have also attempted to punch the ball away on the 2nd goal as it was close enough to him. Not saying Tomori wasn’t at fault, just think the goalkeeper could have done better there too. The entire team was poor and as you said, just didn’t clock but the real culprits were Bennacer for the reasons others already mentioned, Dest who kept forgetting what team he should pass the ball to and Ballo-Toure who was ineffective both offensively and defensively.

      1. Agreed. I wanted to say the same as well ie Tata could have been more aggressive on that second goal for sure. Ball was close to him and it came in the 6 yard box for him to collect. My take on Dest is that he’s very good at RW but not as a defender/RB. I wrote in a previous article that Gabbia needed to get game time at the expense of Kjaer. He’s younger and has potential that needs to be realized. I think Pioli now realizes he needs him fit. It would help with moving Kalulu to RB

  8. It was a disappointing display but clearly based on the coach’s instruction. Before you get angry, know it that milan has an already depleted squad, got booked to early, they were simply playing not to be further depleted. Pioli clearly came for a holdup play – for a draw or a stolen win – considering the fact that Chelsea are not in a better form, but our guys lost the ball too many times and in dangerous situations.
1st and major error: How on earth would Short Isma mark Thiago on a corner.?

I appreciate the lads for we’ve got so many important games ahead with a yet unreliable squad (because of injuries). I trust we’ll pick up from the old ladies over the weekend and now the 2nd leg is a must win.

  9. With so many injuries I didn’t expect much of this game, especially with our most important player Theo missing.
Chelsea didn’t break a sweat tonight. Easiest win.
Our midfield was horrendous and no one was worst than Bennacer but as usual in the ratings he can do no wrong. At fault for the 1st goal, not jusy because he didn’t put any effort in challenging T. Silva on all 3 corners but he was the reason why there was a corner in the 1st place gambling in the penalty area.
Offensively after a Giroud stolen ball Bennacer had a chance to release Leao in 1v1 vs T Silva but as always his forward passes are either too weak, behind or too far ahead. He passes the ball 50 times a game and 48 of them are backwards passes , but analytics guys will tell you his got over 90% passing.
CDK lacks confidence and was too lackluster on the ball. He should score that before half time just like Krunic rebound.
Everyone will blame Ballo Toure and Dest but players at fault for the goals tonight were Bennacer on the 1st, Tomori on the 2nd and Kalulu on the 3rd.
Just because the cross comes from Ballo side doesn’t mean it was his fault. Tomori needs to clear that ball and Kalulu gave up the ball on the 3rd.
Tatarusanu and Leao are the only players that deserve positive ratings . Can’t knock Giroud either because he got zero service. The rest were not a UCL level players tonight .
Hopefully Theo is back for Juventus and the return leg vs Chelsea

  10. I don’t think we can blame the players too much. Pioli has to be dynamic and creative with his tactics especially when a lot of the players are injured. That’s what good tacticians do. Chelsea didn’t have to break a sweat because the coach already knows what and how Milan will play. If Allegri is smart then Juventus will beat us even more easily. Simple instruction would be to pack the bus and break on the counter then mark out Leao because Milan lacks any creativity aside from Him.

  11. Lord Dest, ballo toure are not better than our primavera players.cdk so awful what hurts even more is the manner in which his transfer was, highly overrated.
Is clear the team lost its engine without theo, mike, Calabria.

  12. From these ucl games so far i think we do not have the quality to compete among top level ucl clubs. Ac milan with whatever injuries problem right now have not enough quality to compete in the ucl. The pase and high quality that we saw against napoli costs milan so many injuries meanwhile napoli who won that game just cruise past milan and fastly passover milan in the ucl. Napoli is the real deal from italy right now, milan far from it

  13. Well well well….

Firstly it was a coaching disaster, I don’t get the idea of playing same formation when you don’t have the players to fit in.

Dest: I see why Barcelona wanted him out transfer windows ago. A total joke

Tonali & Bennercer: Bennercer is supposed to be the magic piece that makes our midfield tick and Tonali be the play-breaker but we have the coach using Bennercer for the dirty work and Tonali having no clue what to do in the midfield.

CDK: oh my, I really don’t know if he is the right piece but he is more anonymous the present, there is zero transition, zero pocket spaces, zero everything. He just seems clueless.

Tatarusanu: A fuxing disaster, he shouldn’t be allowed anywhere close to a match post. I don’t think our fielder goalkeeper will be this terrible at decision making.

Leao: it’s not just it for this Milan team, always uninterested when we are not on the ball, always strolling around like he is a mentor to Messi or Ibrahimovic. Doesn’t track back and not bothered. He utilities 1 in 10 chances and people start shouting he is the real deal.
My honest opinion is he’d be sold and money reinvested in the squad maybe he’d get serous elsewhere. And after a very poor showing he had the guts to complain after being subbed off.

Giroud: We must give him credit, I don’t know how he scores so many goals for us, cus he receives zero quality service.

Finally, I don’t know how the coach setup this team today, they were clueless, uninterested, lazy, running around like fuxking amateurs, Tonali was out of position all through, no runners to receive balls, midfield not available for defense to play to. Damn it was an agony to watch. The coach needs to improve on a lot

    1. What a joke of a comment about Leao. Seriously he should be sold? You are obviously anti-Milan Clearly the only one playing tonight ….so if sold who will replace him?, he was sub because the coach gave up on the game,he was interested in damage control and more focused on the next game

    2. You’re talking rubbish. Leao was the ONLY postitive tonight. Tonight’s game is the only time where I can forgive his unwillingness to run back because the rest of the team were ALL crap.

  14. When you have a injury stricken team especially when missing the prominent ones, a versatile coach IMO should tweak his formula to suit those he has at hand. I expected a 3-5-2, 3-4-2-1 or others but Pioli just fumbled and fumbles each time there’s an injury to 3 starters… M&M should look into this team’s strategy.

  15. 3 THINGS:
    1) Milan continue to be the worst passing team in football. Constantly giving the ball away or squandering chances by passing behind the man ot delivering too late. It’s really bad.
    2) Missing Kessie yet? Everyone who thought Milan wouldn’t miss Kessie is foolish. Milan’s midfield got destroyed today and the defense has been exposed without him. And management’s decision to let him go and think that they didn’t even need to replace him with anyone is inexcusable.
    3) Milan’s corners and set pieces are embarrassing and its been that way for 2 seasons now. Chelsea looked like they were going to score on every corner, Milan never look like they are going to score from one.

    1. Kessie would’ve changed nothing. He is currently warming Barca’s bench, you know, the team that lost to a terrible Inter squad last night.

      1. He might be warming and injured but this was just the sort of match where you needed to control the match the tempo of the match which is why a player kessie was useful….see the issue with us is that for the last few years we loose some players who have been with us for long for and we don’t end up adding those requirements…….the continental cup decides how are we progressing…..instead of playing our local rivals……

        1. Thank you very much yes I am the biggest fool but now you explain me what we missed tonight……Milan play with high defensive line for that to succeed you need a mf to cover your cb and drop back was any of our midfielder doing that tonight…a big NO. How suddenly those same tomori or kalulu who we were praising last year suddenly started leaking goals and this happening in league also not only in Europe because they haven’t got the support they need from the midfield….our midfield is being run because they can’t control the tempo of the game……you need to have a tank sort of a player to cover your cbs who comtrols the play playing with hgh defensive lines, your two fullbacks one making forward runs and other staying back to create movements. It’s basic football knowledge my friend…tonight every time kalulu was dropping and covering timori errors….there is no shame in loosing that’s how we learn but the way you loose matters. We lost against napoli but we played better then them…..but this was horrible…..you can’t blame players here it was perhaps too much for them……

        2. No one cares about your opinion. You’ve been exposed on this site multiple times and no one takes you seriously. Go whine about the Barcelona bench-warmer if you want, it won’t change anything.

      2. If Pedri, Gavi and De Jong were Milan players, Kessie would have warming the Milan bench as well alongside Tonali and Bennacer.
I don’t care about Barca but they lost to Inter because of the refereeing.
Kessie is absolutely missed and only his emotional fan boys who are hurt that he left are now his haters and trash talking him

    2. “The best player is always the one who didn’t play, the one who is missing”. Typical fan’s view.

Guys enough with the Kessie nostalgia. You forget how terrible Kessie was last year in CL – he was THE worst player of the team at that period. And while he improved in the last part of the season he was never better than Tonali. In fact they both benefitted greatly from the 3-man midfield formation Pioli used in the end of the season.
This season’s problem is CDK letting Bennacer/Tonali constantly exposed, constantly outnumbered. It doesn’t help that they are out of form (especially Tonali) at the moment.

      1. “Guys enough with the Kessie nostalgia. You forget how terrible Kessie was last year in CL – he was THE worst player of the team at that period. And while he improved in the last part of the season he was never better than Tonali. ”

Facts. People just want to validate themselves by saying “it’s all because Kessie isn’t here and I said he should be renewed”. BS. Kessie wouldn’t have changed anything yesterday (either). Overrated player who played one good season in Milan. One.

        1. The 1st Chelsea goal where Thiago Silva was 3 times left alone by Bennacer wouldn’t have happened if Kessie was in the game because Kessie would have been on Thiago Silva and Bennacer would have been on the bench where he spent most of his time over the last 2 years , being Kessie’s and Tonali’s back up.
That goal changed the game and it was all Bennacer, from giving up the corner to putting no effort to compete with Thiago Silva on all 3 corners. He wasn’t out jumped, he just left him free.
So he absolutely would have changed something in last night’s game

    3. Yessss finally!!!! Couldn’t wait for this. I’ve been saying from the start of the season that Kessie would be missed. He used to cover so much ground and protect that defence plus play the ball out to the attack. Bennacer and Tonali don’t offer the same protection but are great at being being more offensive. We’re missing the defensive capabilities in the midfield

      1. “Great at being offensive”???

I was too pissed to comment my thoughts at all, but couldn’t pass on this one.

We have no offense. None whatsoever. Non-existent. We couldn’t make a single forward penetrating play. Every oppor3we had, we send the ball back. Unbelievable how we lack any attacking passing plays…

        1. @Forzaa_ you missed the point completely what I was trying to make. It’s not this game I’m talking about but in general

    4. What we miss is the right flank. Calabria, Florenzi, Messias, Saelemaekers, there goes our entire right flanks from last season to injuries (NB: Kalulu is already moved to CB).

    5. Careful to use the ‘K’ word here. Many of the members will be triggered. Many of them will come up with fully-subjective-resentful view for whatever reason. Been saying over and over, if we can’t replace, then adapt. Expecting Pierre and Fik to do the same thing like half of last season without the same support of a strong anchoring DM is just nonsense.

  16. I do not want to discuss player performances because for me it all came down to one.
Pioli is totaly out of his depth when it comes to UCL.
He prepared the team like if we play against Empoli.
Krunic on RW is no solution just a player to put in a position of a formation u usually play.
Dest and Ballo are disasters waiting to happen.
Why not use 442 or even 352 with this players available is beyond me

Today we were just waiting for things to happen with no idea what to do.

    1. Genuine questions: so you want to throw Gabbia in his first start vs Chelsea in the UCL as the third CB in the 352? Who plays the wing backs in that formation given Dest and Ballo are disasters?

Who plays LM and especially RM.? And which two forwards play in the 442? Keep in mind Origi just coming back from injury

And finally most important question, when have we ever played 352 or 442 in the last 3 years?

      1. Reason we couldn’t throw Gabbia his first start in UCL is bcs pioli refuse to rotate so he HASN’T had a start in the ucl.

          1. Yep. Pioli should finally learn to rotate (in time). That’s why we lost Calabria & Kjaer in the first place. And I bet Giroud is next.

        1. @aus He did rotate. He rotated for Kjaer instead of Gabbia who’s younger. Also still waiting for the answers to the other questions. Not necessarily you but microslav.

Too much FIFA and football manager these days got ppl thinking you can just change a formation and it would solve everything

          1. I was thinking leao and giroud up front.
Dest ballo on the flanks secured by 3 at the back instead of 2 and de ketelaare behind the strikers (3-4-1-2) or krunic for more stablilty. This way noone plays out of position. Did you see how far back our strikers played?
Krunoc in times played his nuber one role between bennacer and tonali.

Its ok if you dont agree. Changes must not always be radical but yesterday we were too predictable and we lacked intensity.

We tried to play chelsea as if its just another game . That is not enough in UCL.

          2. @microslav, I do disagree but I also welcome your points fairly as I def agree we don’t have the intensity. But I really don’t see how we try out a new formation against Chelsea in the UCL. Also, with a 3412 system, the wing backs do alot of work. We currently don’t have any to replace Ballo or Dest.

  17. Lots of shit went down today, PIOLI being the architect, at this point in the lifetime of this Milan we still don’t have a backup formation in cases of injuries and for tactical solutions. it is amazing that we still stick with the same formation when it clearly isn’t going to work. That has always been Pioli’s weak point.

Chelsea owned the midfield, and there was nothing our formation was going to do against it. CDK was conspicuously absent, Leao couldn’t do much with half of all of Chelsea’s Right Wing on him when he had the ball. Giroud was ineffective, Playing Krunic instead of a more adaptable player like Rebic at RW was always going to be a disaster against an EPL side. Dest is no more than a Brahmin Diaz in RB. Tomori was a devastatingly out of form, and Tata isn’t even Bench material… Really sad to see this today, absolutely nothing worked for Milan, and it is difficult to pick any positives from today’s game. Even if we had a fully fit squad, we may not have come off today’s game with a draw. Pioli need a tactical shake up… These are examples of the days when your tactics won’t work and you nee to try something different, and he obviously didn’t have the answers. We are not ready for the UCL. Let’s just make the most money we can from it and focus on Scudetto.

The only positive may be that Chelsea watched enough of Leao to not want to buy him.

See you guys at the weekend.

  18. Embarrassing that’s word to describe…..for first 5 mins we played with intensity then we were outplayed…..midfield was no where to be found, cdk taken out of the game. When you main source of creativity gets taken then its hard for any team to let alone win but score a goal…what was tomori thinking with auba goal….that was a school boy error facing towards a goal poking a leg out…..lot of ppl might disagree but leao was well the only souce of decency in this milan side tonight…..with juventus this week and Chelsea it’s a hard week ahead…..but next week I hope and pray we even manage to get a point of that game…..because beating Chelsea with this our current line up is is just way too much….I end up having migraine I was like oh god out of is this the Barcelona of 2010’s that we were facing…..this was one horrendous performance

  19. Milan tonight was already defeated. I’m sorry the way you rate them, and no, Dest can’t be penalized at all. I’m not a fan of him, but, hey , you got to say the truth, Milan didn’t belive on a good result…. read Pioli before game. Don’t pick on players., they tried…. but wasn’t enough after second goal.

  20. Best game plan could have been sit back and hit them on a counter. That could earn us a win from an underperforming Chelsea team or worst a draw or a honourable loss rather than this crass result. All the same, we keep our heads up high and beat them on Tuesday

  21. Ballo was at fault on the 2nd and 3rd goals, first jogging to close out on the cross (Tomori was poor too), then failing to track the overlapping James – while Tomori was pointing him in that direction. First goal was just a huge WTF… Why on earth was Bennacer covering Thiago Silva?? That one’s probably on the coaching staff, can’t really blame the player there – he shouldn’t have been given that task. Period.
So yeah, Ballo is a lower division player. He simply can’t play for Milan. And the same can be said for Dest, he’s just not good at anything. Calabria and Theo were sorely missed tonight.
Krunic is fine as an option off the bench, and to play against weaker opponents in Serie A; not nearly good enough for CL. Alexis and Messias might not be great, but either one would’ve been way more useful.
Tatarusanu’s reaction time and reflexes are gone, he looks like an 80 year-old out there. Maignan would’ve done better on all three goals.
That’s just to talk about the main absentees. On a different note, Maybe starting a more mobile player up front could’ve caused more problems to Chelsea’s defense. In the battle of the old men, Thiago swallowed Giroud. Can’t even blame him with the lack of service, but Rebic would at least make them sweat a bit.
Finally, I think we have a good starting 11, when fully heathy. We can probably beat Cheasea with everyone back (which won’t happen for the next game). Depth is the real issue, our substitutes are way far behind, the gap is just too large, unfortunately…

    1. @Daniel.
Krunic was going to be the main piece in the midfield before he got booked. And after then, he faded.
Simply put, milan started the game well, and remained in it until we got booked consecutively. They quickly learnt fron last season and as it stands those fielded were the best team we can field considering the depletion and injury situation. We can’t afford to lose more players. They wanted to stay safe – no red cards nor additional injuries – this appeared to be the reason for the mediocre. And hence became too mild and overly sloppy in even dangerous situations.
Spirit went down, but I trust we will be back up again and even better.

  22. Also, lets talk about Maldini. I know everyone loves him but let’s get real.
    Dest – a disaster.
Bakayoko- 2 seasons now and Pioli doesn’t trust him to play a single minute. Why is he on the team?
    Ballo-Toure- big disappointment.
    Tatarusanu – Seriously?
    Origi- Terrible
    CDK – disappointing
    Let Calhanaglu leave for FREE
    Let Donnarumma leave for FREE
Let Kessie leave for FREE and don’t even replace him with a starting level player.
haven’t adressed the biggest weakness on the team , RW, for 3 seasons going now.
Most likely will let Leo leave as well.
But hey, we gave Tonali a new contract….

    1. That’s not fair man. You need to consider the means he was given. Having a budget of around 50m annually, it’s ridiculous for today’s standards. Salary cap of 4m? Seriously these are numbers of a Championship team. How can you blame him for the free departures? How could he keep them without money? He didn’t decide the salary cap, management did, he had/has to live with it.
He said it several times: because of the very limited means he has, all the choices are gambles. All of them. You cannot buy proven players in this budget.
But having said that, I still don’t get the RW situation, despite all the limitations, there could be something better, at least a loannee.

  23. This is a very very hard defeat to take especially gucen that this Chelsea team we lost to is just above average(in my opinion). We gifted them the game, I still have an issue with Pioli not replacing Bennacer earlier, not including Adli in the Champions league Squad is also costing us and I don’t want to even get into the Dest debate. We just given the English media undeserved bragging rights over Milan.

  24. This is a very very hard defeat to take especially given that this Chelsea team we lost to is just above average(in my opinion). 25. Ultimately, a bad day but a decimated and tired team wasn’t going to beat a Chelsea team with both talent and depth if they showed up. This game shouldn’t define the season and there’s no point looking to single out bad performances IMO – we’re down to the bare bones in player count.

  26. Very good point someone mentioned earlier is that we held the ball a lot that caused in a lot of possession lost and also sloppy passes. Positioning can be blamed too because in defence u see Tomori doesn’t mark his man he stands beside Kalulu but doesn’t see anyone coming from side or stuff. CDK was invisible and he doesn’t contribute defensively. Krunic same Bennacer issue. Leao wasn’t good with ball too at start Fofana was literally so good for him and then Chalobah was also. Giroud didn’t get the ball and when he had he lost it. Bro why Dest whyyyy this guy bro. Tata wasn’t good but the defence left it open too. Tonali was not their even. The issue is we don’t give some intelligent passes like on few occasions we tried to dribble when pass was more important like leao for example he could have passed Giroud in ending moments after that Giroud was subbed btw but he went himself and the ball losing was frustrating well we didn’t have all players so I won’t really mind but some of our starters were not even great today everyday is to learn and improve bad result but shouldn’t effect move on forza Milan

  27. About Pioli. He gets the most out of his players, but tactically he has no ideas. He can only play one way with one formation regardless of the players he has available. When it’s not working he has no clue how to change it. He just makes a couple substitutions and hopes something will happen. They have no real plan offensively. they are good at creating turnovers but when they have to break a team down, they can’t do it. They just wait for individual moments of brilliance from Leao or Theo. That’s not good enough.

  28. Well…and I will give a rating to our owners and mercato 22/23 – just 1 point (1-10 ratings) 🙂 this is it 🙂 You have guys like Leao,Giroud,Theo,Maignan,,Tonali in your team and you are a League Champion.Great potential, and your biggest transfer is futuristic player named CdK.Thank you Mr.Pioli that you stay with us whithout any reasonal reinforcement before this season. No chance today, thanks to all the players. Not this level, but thanks for the fight…

    1. Wtf is this? The new owners came in September after the mercato. The mercato was spoiled due to there being effectively no owner at all during the transition. Neither side wanted to pay for transfers they didn’t have to make. Btw Maignan and Theo are injured 🤦‍♂️

  29. This was milans worst performance in two years.. The passes were horrible. Dest and ballo toure are horrible. De ketelaere is far from good too. I’ve said I’ll rate him next season but he’s been so bad. He doesn’t even run hard. At least Diaz runs his socks off. What has happened to tomori? Ever since his renewal he’s been brutal.

I’ll give the benefit of the doubt since we’re missing many key players but that was hard to watch

    1. The reason that this year we are leaking so many goals in europe and seria a is because out midfield is leaving our defense very excposed. So far very disappointed with cdk because he doesn’t track back a lot. Pioli has got address all these goals that we’ve been getting. At the same time we are not creating anough chances. If leao is not there we can’t create anything. I’m sorry but at this point I’d rather see diaz as am.

  30. Thomas I couldn’t even recognise Milan. Trust me the English media is already on over drive, because we gifted them the match.

    1. I’m more worried for the bad performance rather than the score.
As I’ve said before, during the summer Milan did not prepare themselves for CL and Serie A…
We need to focus on the Campionato. It’s a golden opportunity for us, all the other contenders are crap. Napoli will start losing points too.

  31. all these comments about blaming Pioli, blaming the players, bla bla this, bla bla that,..
    we lose terribly tonight? yes!
our team’s performances are waay below par tonight? yes!
the coach & players make many mistakes tonight? yes!
but it’s only one game, ladies.
we’re still have home game against chelsea next week, and two more after that.
our points in serie-a & in champions league are still good.
let’s support our beloved team like the curva sud did in stamford bridge a few hours ago, eventhough we lose 3-0, but still towards the end of the match they sang Milan chants loudly & proudly like we won that game, just to support the team

    1. Good point bringing the Curva Sud. The reason I did not turn off my TV is I still hear them sing even after the final whistle. 👏

  32. I don’t understand the people that are criticizing Pioli. What was he suppose to do with the only 15,16 healthy players available.
Milan didn’t lose to Cremonese , they lost to Chelsea and they lost because of individual mistakes by few players. Chelsea wasn’t much better than Milan tonight, they didn’t outplay Milan, they just took advantage of Milan’s mistakes.
    Everyone calm down.
Theo and Messias should be back for the return leg and especially for Juventus game.
    Forza Milan

      1. We can criticize him as much as we want but at least until January he is our only hope on the right side. Maybe in January Maldini will actually sign a proper RW after 3.5 years of neglecting that position.
Don’t you think he is a better option than Rade Krunic on the RW?

          1. When was the last time Origi played as a RW?
Probably in his Lille days when he was a teenager.
He isn’t that young player anymore to play on the wing. He isn’t beating anyone off the dribble’
Also playing on the right requires running back and defending , it isn’t just about the offense

  33. To be frank our Milan team is inconsistent and rely too much on leao although injury has deplete our squad and today’s game shows it. Anyway the performance was very horrendous and unimpressive both offensively and defensively they were too easy on them and were not moving the ball quickly which they could have done to penetrate Chelsea. Premier league teams play with high intensity and they have experienced that last season against liverpool. They should have expected that in today’s game which they didn’t display no composure no confidence with the ball. Closing my comment is the concern for the right wing position which is obviously missing. Krunic played there but it was like nobody was at that position he was completely lost I hope either Alexis or Rebic to flourish in that position because for messias he doesn’t even have pace and good physique to be a threat against teams that play with high intensity. If that position continues like this, I think it will be better if we revisit the market in January and hopefully have a reliable right wing.

  34. How the hell did they prepare for this game did they jerk off each other almost all of the passes they lost it to chelsea the only one that did something was leao and milan still is waiting to renew that man’s contract

  35. Pioli deserves the blame. It is rather not smart to keep putting and expecting players with different characteristics to replace the first team squad.

Any smart coach looking at his injury ravaged squad would play to the strength of the available players, instead of expecting them to play like the starters.

Milan could have played a cattenaccio. There’s no shame. Pioli thinks he’s playing Empoli or what? Teams that struggle in their local leagues give their best at the UCL.

Considering how Pioli fails to integrate players on time, he gets exposed by injuries and players absence. There’s no reason why Gabbia and Tomori shouldn’t have been the CBs for the match against Empoli. Kjaer wouldn’t have been injured. Imagine that Kalulu started at RB instead of Calabria.

Before you say hindsight: Calabria was injured against Napoli. Kjaer had an injury scare during the international break. Why would a smart coach risk them? Because he refused to let Gabbia or Thiaw play! You can only learn by playing not sitting on the bench.

Pioli’s integration method is too slow and meaningless. Balo-Toure would never had played if Theo wasn’t injured. Consider again that Theo had played every single match.

We saw glimpse of Vranckx against Sampdoria yet, he hasn’t stepped on the pitch since. Pioli will play Tonali and Bennacer until they pick up an injury or start making mistakes.

    1. Think i tried to say this after empoli game. All points are fair and valid. Eventually, Bennacer will get injured, or Tonali will get suspended. what will pioli do then?
Pioli is also a dumbass for using 4231 today. Literally use the exact same team in a 4321 with Krunic as a CM. Not hard at all.

    2. To be honest, in Pioli’s defense, it’s hard to integrate new players in when every year you get those new players on the last day of the Mercato, season in full swing and literally no time to work with these players because of international duty. Plus those players are usually super young and mostly projects, not a guaranteed product. Thiaw came from 2nd Bundesliga, Vranckx is only like 19, and Dest was a knee jerk reaction by Maldini after Florenzi injury. Dest is MLS quality player

  36. Children overreacting to a defeat when half the team is missing. Our starting XI is almost a match for any team. Adding quality depth is going to take another two seasons. Calm the f down.

  37. Dest is atrocious, send him back to Barca in January. Why why after 2 consecutive corners would we allowe Benny to continue to guard Silva?? That is just pure stupidity. And of course 3rd time is a charm. It was inevitable. One of the defenders should have switched for him or Giroud should have. Inexcusable. That goal totally changed the game. We miss Kessie more than we realize. He was a defensive cover in front of the back 4 for the aggressive press we play. Now we are exposed as Tonali cannot provide the same type of cover. We must try Aster. CDK needs to sit back and watch a bit. Too much pressure and expectations and it shows. Basically we are the same team as last season minus Kessie. Still don’t have a RW nor a reliable CAM. So we are worse off one could argue. Nobody expected CDK to struggle this much but we should have he’s just a kid. He will be great in time, but needs exactly that – TIME. We need to start playing Adli, Aster and Thiaw and see what they are made of. Tough game on Saturday. Doesn’t look promising of we play this way. Pioli can’t keep on using the same players, they are tired and it’s showing

  39. Ok so can we stop the Bennacer v Tonali crap now? Tonali made some mistakes but overall was solid in a very difficult game, Bennacer was awful today. But that doesn’t mean he’s a bad player, he’s actually consistently excellent. Point is, they both are excellent and they both have bad days here and there. They’re teammates and are excellent young kids, support these boys don’t bash. Now dest and ballo toure on the other hand are not special, not very talented, and just aren’t good. This is on Maldini and massara.

On the whole though, this game was lost due to poor signings, weak depth, and poor coaching. Pioli keeps jamming this 4231 regardless of who is playing… it’s ridiculous. He is a great motivator but is so awful at tactics and responding to opponents with formation changes. We already were screwed with injuries and he put an already neutered team in a more difficult position tactically. Bad stuff.

    1. We could have tried that today for sure. Also we could run a 3 man backline and play all 3 at the same time. At least Gabbia has some height. Lastly we need to get Adli integrated, so bright in preseason now nothing and it’s a because of this stupid 4231… change to a 3 man mid and were all set. We have mids, use them. We have Tonali, Bennacer, Pobega, Adli, Vranckx, and Krunic…. use the mids Pioli!

  40. Could have had Kvaratshkelia for 11m. Instead we got Messias and Ballo-Toure for roughly the same price if you combine them. Don’t know about you guys but I’d take Messias and Ballo-Toure any day!!……………………….. great job Maldini….

    1. Could have had Messi for 5m way back in 2004. What if we’d held on to Aubameyang? Messias and Ballo-Toure have been on the books since 2021. Was Kvaratskhelia on the map then? What about having Leao who plays in that position? Which one sits on the bench, and if they’re sitting on the bench would we be talking about them? What if Kvaratskhelia had been trash for Napoli this season instead? Hindsight is easy.

  41. So sad i cry and i get angry ! But mayby we are not cl winning matrial yet ! No one did a god match today ! But plz keep on working its the beginning of season ! Work work work my dear milan family !!!

  42. Bennacer wants more money, man he is so average, sell him and every other fckr that thinks he is better than they actually are. Tomori showing why Chelsea sold him. Poor showing

  43. We had a bad day and the team wasn’t even in half strength. So a loss was expected.

But the moment we saw Krunic on RW, I am sure every Milan fan knew we lost. lol Last time Krunic played on the wing was back in 20/21 and we pretty much lost every time lol

Chelsea showed that the whole Milan team is useless if they just block Two players, Leao and Bennacer. Marked these two with three players literally.

Everyone is bashing bennacer and yes he played bad. But there was a reason he played bad, there was always three players onto him and Pioli had no idea what to do against it. That’s literally why we lost.

Sassuolo and Atalanta showed us what happens when a team blocks and guards Leao. We end up drawing.
But today, Chelsea showed us what happens when a team block and guard both Leao and Bennacer. We turn into relegation zoned team and get wrecked with 3 goals.
Juve is gonna try the same $hit.

One thing is very clear, Pioli has no tactical awareness to turn a game from the dugout.
When Pioli saw bennacer was pressed by three players, Pioli could’ve pushed Bennacer up and Pull Krunic down… or just used a 4321 to negate the press. But no, he just waited till her conceded 3 goals for making the first sub. Under Pioli It all comes down to individual miracles of Leao for us to win and that’s about it. If Leao plays we win, otherwise, we do nothing. THAT’s all on Pioli.

Spaletti turned Krava into a beast with only half the talents of Leao while we don’t even have a clear attacking plan after 3 whole years. The Only saving grace for Pioli was the defense was doing well. But now, even our defense is faltering. We need a strong presence like Jakub Kiwior who can deal with air balls with ease.

But today, players are not to blame. Pioli was just out of his depth in UCL. That Empoli and Chelsea games were a clear proof of that.

Pioli is making a LOT of mistakes lately. Hope he finds clarity again. before saying something like we wont go far in UCL with Pioli, I would wait till we face a big team with our full strength. I believe in Pioli but I think Pioli has a LOT of room to improve.

    Forza.

    1. Our next match should have Diaz and cdk playing together with rebic up front. With that d attack will more mobile and unpredictable

  44. Milan will get their mojo back in san siro for sure.diaz should start ahead of charles and theo fit enough, adli exclusion from the team is bad for Milan after a good pre-season.Lossing against an english team is very hard for me to take anytime any day,our joy will be restored in the return leg.Forza Milan

  45. Most of our starters who played, shouldn’t be blem neither Pioli.
Am putting the blem on health sector both the medical and trainee.
What is wrong that, we can’t play 5 matches without injury.
Is they no governing rules to regulate these players meals?
Our main rival isn’t serial a or Europe but injury. Something must be done about it. Else…..

  46. Most criticisms are destructive which is bad. Like someone rightly identified the chants by the curva sud. When the team was displeasing to watch, curva sud became the only joy. Who else noticed Brahim responded to the support.
Big teams with greater awareness, experience and account lose and play woefully, why then should we nail these lads to the cross, even when we know they will surely bounce back and impress.

  47. Dest doesn’t deserve to play for a club as big as Milan. Send him to the MLS and he can play for LA Galaxy. FBT too.
