Report: Arsenal make intentions clear over €50m man amid AC Milan links

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will face competition if they make an attempt to sign Granit Xhaka from Arsenal in January, according to a report.

We recently reported that the Rossoneri are determined to add more experience and leadership to a very young squad, and this is where the two situations could prove to be a match.

Xhaka could represent a good opportunity to add just that, as his Gunners career appears to be unfolding fast. The Swiss international was stripped of the captaincy earlier in the week after he stormed off when being subbed off during a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, firing expletives at the fans who booed him.

It has been suggested by some outlets in Italy that Milan – who have also been linked with Ivan Rakitic and Nemanja Maticcould possibly make a move in the winter mercato.

According to a report from The Times though, Newcastle United are ready to offer him a chance to stay in England, despite reports from outlets such as The Guardian suggesting a move back to Germany is most likely.

Arsenal paid €50m to sign Xhaka from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016 (as per the Telegraph)

Xhaka is apparently ‘concerned that losing his place in Arsenal’s starting line-up will also jeopardise his chances of playing in next year’s European Championship, should Switzerland qualify’.

The report continues by stating that ‘Xhaka’s position appears untenable’, but Newcastle’s interest is hampered by the 27-year-old’s £130k-a-week wages.
