Report: Chelsea ready to rival AC Milan for signing of Wigan Athletic star

By Oliver Fisher -

Chelsea are ready to rival AC Milan for Wigan Athletic left-back Antonee Robinson, according to a report from England.

Widespread reports emerged on the penultimate day of the window suggesting that Milan and Wigan had agreed a fee for the USA international, with left-back Ricardo Rodriguez having completed a move to PSV Eindhoven earlier in the day.

Robinson seemed all set to complete a switch to the Rossoneri prior to Friday’s 8pm deadline, even flying over to undergo medical tests before making his way to Casa Milan where new players usually sign their contracts.

However, rumours began to emerge suggesting the move had hit the rocks, and Wigan then released a statement on their official website confirming that Robinson would be staying.

Certain outlets – such as Tuttosport and Di Marzio – have suggested that Milan will try to sign Robinson again in the summer window given the uncertainty over Diego Laxalt’s future at the club.

However, the Daily Mirror are now reporting that Frank Lampard wants to sign a new left-back at the end of the season with Marcos Alonso and Emerson not up to scratch, and Robinson is apparently on his shortlist.

As per WhoScored, Wigan only paid £2m to sign Robinson from Everton last summer, but they could choose to cash in for the right price and a move back to the Premier League would no doubt be welcomed by the 22-year-old.
