Report: Mendes wants hefty Milan renewal for Leao and no release clause

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao is under contract at AC Milan until 2024 and after his proper breakout season in 2021/22, the Rossoneri are working on a contract renewal. It’s proving to be a bit difficult, though, due to the player’s agent.

Milan have been in talks with Jorge Mendes, the super agent, for quite some time now and there is a willingness to renew the current contract. However, they are not on the same page when it comes to the new salary.

According to Il Giornale (via MilanNews), Mendes has made it known that they want a contract worth €7m per year. Milan, on the other hand, have not gone about their current offer of €4.5-5m, which is a significant difference.

There is another issue as well, relating to the release clause, as the current on in the contract is set at €150m. This obviously protects Milan for the time being but Mendes wants to remove it completely in a potential new deal. The renewal, in other words, is not close currently.

  1. I really want to know how the likes of Barcelona and Chelsea deal with these agents where they include fat release clauses and option to renew for another year. Cus it seems management is lacking somewhere with the way these agents are holding us by our sacks

      1. Actually, it’s even less than that, around 100. Barca for example has wages close to 500M. This as you said is the reason, and also why Barca is basically bankrupt having to sell off their long-term TV rights and anything else of value. The other biggest clubs take in so much more than Milan could ever dream of, and some also cheat the rules. It’s nice to still think of Milan as a big club, the simple truth is however they are not.

        1. Well, it is a big club, just not a rich one. Like Newcastle is now a rich club, but it’s not a big club. I think the definition of “big” needs to contain some combination of history, playing in one of the big 5 leagues, and then finally financial capacity.

  2. Sell this guy now and replace him immediately, only one good season all these drama, please get rid of him and mendez either you are for milan or against.Example is theo hernandez,he is a true symbol of milan.

  3. Milan unfortunately have lost its allure. We have become a mid tier team with this current recruitment strategy and wage structure. And everybody is taking advantage of that, players included. We either accept our new status and continue this buy young, buy low model or go back to competing with the big boys for the top players and regain the fear factor. Otherwise we will see more mid tier teams from the EPL fancying their chances in competing for players we want.

    1. “Milan unfortunately have lost its allure.”

Yeah. Giroud, Hernandez, Origi, Adli,… All hated the idea to join Milan.

        1. You don’t get it @bb. We either can get older players like Ibra Kajer Giroud Florenzi Ibra (whose market was limited) or really young players and hope they develop – like Theo, Tonali, Leo, etc…HOWEVER, the point is WHEN they develop into stars we cannot afford to keep them and the cycle starts over again. That makes us a feeder club. Second, we cannot attract players in their PRIME – which is needed to take the next step in quality to compete with Europes best. We have been given 40M to spend on players after wining the league LOL. It’s comical. It’s why M&M have to TRY to use loans with options on Ziyech, Diallo, etc…because we have no money left IF we use it on one player like CDK. These owners have no intention to spend $$. We are being run for profit like Atalanta. Ya we will have some good seasons but when our players become stars we will sell because we can’t pay market value for them. So eventually all will leave and players like Sanches, Botman, etc… won’t come as they want to get paid as well. So it’s really old or really young players we will attract then sell the young ones for profit. Great business model – horrible for the fans. Strange how u cannot see that friend.

          1. ” We are being run for profit like Atalanta.”

FFS! How many times do we have to mention the 3 letter acronym that affects the Milan budget?! FFP. FINANCIAL.F*NG.FAIR.PLAY.

That’s why Milan cannot splash out 100M€. How hard is it to understand? People have written about the FACT for months now but still people cry about the tiny transfer budget and “We’ve turned into Atalanta” etc.

Well… Thank Berlusconi & Li for that. Now Elliott & RedBird has to fix the budget to comply with the FFP rules and only then they can start investing again.

          2. “. We have been given 40M to spend on players after wining the league LOL. It’s comical.”

Comical or not but it’s the FFP. Some clubs cannot spend hundreds of millions every transfer window, have 1B€ debts and carry on like nothing happened (ie. Barca). Certain clubs are punished for much smaller “crimes”. Milan is one of those victims.

But the good thing is that Milan has fixed their budget. Next summer things should look pretty good for Milan if they can qualify for the UCL again.

  4. I am pretty tired of this whole saga. So, one good season is sufficient for some players (or their agents) to start making heavy demands. At any rate, the way things are unfolding does not promise anything good, and as such, I would sell him now if any good offer arrives, rather than run the risk of ending up with another Kessie story in 2 years’ time.

  5. I think it is now clear to everyone that this story will not end happily for Milan and Leao ! These things are going to happen more and more often, and not just for Milan. Managers and players are getting greedier. No more love and honor to wear someone’s famous jersey. Maldini and the team will have to be very patient and smart to turn things in our favor.

  6. Selling Leao won’t solve anything, because even if we get enough money from that sale to replace him with a top player, we will still need to offer a salary very similar to what Mendes is asking to that player. We get a young prospect to replace him?? Best case scenario, it pays off and we end up having another exciting young player with lots of potential in our hands and then what? The top clubs are going to ask about him and whoever his agent is, is going to ask for a similar pay rise sooner than later. The main issue here, is that a winning project makes no sense if we’re only good at getting and developing great young players that we won’t be able to keep. We’re going to find ourselves in this same situation with almost every single great player we have. If I somehow won the lottery today and spent all the money on a Lamborghini, as soon as I need to replace something or have it checked I would have to sell it because they’re too expensive to keep for me; having had the money to buy it didn’t mean I had the means to keep it, and what is the point of having expensive luxury cars if I won’t be able to keep them. The ownership needs to use this Leao situation to send a message on what type of project exactly they want for Milan and change their salary policies, or accept that our project is basically going to be to buy young players and develop them for the biggest teams, which I think would be a mistake.

    1. Great analysis and the basic theory behind the failure of sub-prime lending and generally living beyond ones means. That being said, I think there is a happy medium somewhere. Milan will not be able to compete with City or PSG, ever, and will not and should not go 1bn in the red like Barcelona, but I agree that the wage “cap” should progressively increase little by little to keep up with inflation (not today’s crazy inflation generally speaking, but the usual increase in wages and transfer fees over time). I think this will happen as we need to remember that the club’s financial structure is still being worked on. The club is still developing its revenue streams as it recovers from the doldrums of mid-table mediocrity and mis-management of the 7 years prior to Elliott. This will only be our 2nd season back in the CL after not participating for 8. So you can’t go too high too fast with wages/fees. I think Leao at 6m I think we will be able to do as Ibra is coming off his 7m salary, but it can only be done for Leao (or one player at a time in other words) for now. Once the club starts playing regularly in the CL and improves other revenue stream it will be able to better keep players like Leao, always buying low however, and thus further cementing it’s CL presence. This is the virtuous cycle.

      1. The salary cap will be climbing up once the Milan start making money instead of losing. Everything suggests they might be able to do it already this season so next summer the cap SHOULD be bigger.

  7. 5mil is a fair salary for his abilitys. Let’s be honest Leao isn’t the most consistent player. But if him and his agent think that he is good enough for 7mil, then give him those extra 2mil as hard bonuses. If he scores and assist a certain number of goals then he gets extra 2mil. If he really belives that he is capable to justify those extra 2mil, he will have no problem accepting a contract like that. If not, sell him now. You have a perfect replacment in Noa Lang any way.

  8. Anytime Milan is about to get a formidable squad to reach our peak then these stupid and selfish so called agents ruins it for us.Sorry to say where is Mino Raiola now. Where he buried with all the money he acquired. Hmmm money money money

  9. One word…. SELL

Whether it’s the best option or not… Sell.
If a player cannot call his agent to order in terms of negotiation with the club you claim you love, then I see no reason that player should stay.

The SELL will (or might), be painful at first, but we’ll move on in the end.

Just tired of this merry-go-round sh!t

    Forza Milan 🔴⚫

  10. Not sure why anyone of you believes any of these stories as they pretty much on a daily basis from article to article switch between us offering 4.5 mil to six mil + bonuses and still you eat it up raw every time.
Doesnt really sounds like very credible reports when there is so much variation in all the reports posted does it ?

Im not saying mendez doesnt want as much as possible for his players and himself but for what we know a renewal could pretty much happen around the corner and still you question the players will to stay.

In the end 5-6 mil a year should suffice but if the player refuse to renew by early august then fine, see if we can find a buyer willingly paying 100 mil or more.

    1. Martin, early August is three weeks away. The season starts on the 13th. The club needs as much time as possible to source a proper replacement because the selling club of that potential replacement will also not want to be empty-handed when their season begins. This dude needs to renew by August 1, and if he hasn’t then it’s time to move on the market. I let the club slide on Donnarumma, Calhanoglu and Kessie as part of an adjustment period/growing pains, but Leao is worth serious money and losing him for free, or for a minimum fee in a year (and remember we paid 35m for him) would be unacceptable to me.

      1. im not opposing what you say as i also said if he hasnt renewed by early august (close to the 1rst) i would also start to see if we could find a rich suitor for leao. Think he will renew before then though.

  11. So this is what us going on with agents nowadays. Their job is to piss off everyone and move their players to arabic money clubs.
If Leao has nothing to contradict, then he needs to be sold

  12. The problem is that our beloved Milan has no financial power (money) to compete with other big teams on current market. Have you ever seen MVP that does not deserve 7M per season? I think in the current market situation the answer is no. Currently one good season is enough for a player and his agent to demand more money. Example Lukaku floped at MU then Chelsea payed a lot to take him, Tammy Abraham is now expensive because of one good season, etc.

We need to reshape our wage policy or become a transit for young talent who will be passing through Milan to big clubs to earn more money

    1. Im not in total disagreement that the wage structure should be reajusted BUT you cant let players and their agents completely dictate salaries either hence why its called contract negotiations. Some people are of the view that we should just pay what ever the players might demand and im not saying you are amongst them but doing that also causes issues because following that road can also easily tumble the cardhouse financially speaking as everyone will start to demand far more. We gotta respect that we have some finances to consider and within those parametres also being able to renew contracts,

    2. “Have you ever seen MVP that does not deserve 7M per season? ”

Yes. Until a few years ago before the wages issue wasn’t as bloated as nowadays.

  13. Sell him now! Players and agents are taking too much advantage of the current market situation. No player is bigger than the club and not all players and agents are that greedy. For every Gigi there’s a Tonali and for every Kessie there’s a Theo. We need dedicated and commuted players like Tonali, Kalulu, Theo etc who value and appreciate chance and investment the club made. Pepe was better than him at Lille, albeit his potential was enormous, he went to arsenal and flopped. Respect clubs that give you the platform to develop and grow like Theo did. 5-6mil is already a significantly improved offer. We don’t have to entertain that nonsense otherwise our better performers like Maignan, Theo, Tomori, etc will demand similar salary.

  14. The thing is, Milan has all the power over agents like mendez now that there’s 2 years left on the contract.

If we don’t come to an agreement on renewal this season with Leao, either we only sell for 150mil, or we bench the player for two seasons. Now mendez will be forced to either renew or let the player get destroyed on the bench with no gametime on a 2 mil salary like Real regularly does with players who doesn’t follow RM’s terms.

THAT’s how it should be done. Our way or the bench way. We won’t sell, nor will we use. The only way that would be left for these shitbag agents to Deal with that is to agree favorable terms with us.

The problem is, we don’t use that power while other clubs do. We are TOOO DA*NED NICE. Of course this power is exercised behind closed doors and very subtly, but it needs to be exercised to keep shitbag agents like Mendez in the leash.

Hope M&M learns to strongarm shitbags who thinks they can hold our club hostage for ransom.

  16. Sell him, sell him now!! We don’t want to see another star goes free. I agree we should gradually increase salary cap but we should not be dictated by agents. Also what happened to this players! Playing one good season and suddenly asking for double Salary! Was it the same practice in Milan best days, with all the stars like Kaka, Ronaldinho, Pirlo, Shevchenko??? Sell him or bench him till agree with the terms. We can’t be always goody goody and played by agents and players. We are still Milan, best club of Italy!
