Repubblica: Milan and Inter want to inaugurate new stadium in 2030 – the timeline

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan and Inter have been working on the stadium project for several years now, with little progress made thus far. However, in recent weeks, positive signals have arrived and it seems the project will materialise.

The construction of the stadium, however, will not be fast as there are many beurocratic hurdles to get past. The public debate could take place as early as later this month and that will be decisive, seeing as the demolition of Giuseppe Meazza must be cleared.

It won’t be a cheap project and the construction will not be rushed, as highlighted by La Repubblica (via FraNasato). Milan and Inter want to begin the project at the start of 2024, with a total construction timeline of six years.

In other words, the inauguration would take place in 2030. If you haven’t been to the San Siro yet, there is still a lot of time to make the trip and experience what is one of the most iconic stadiums in the world.

Since Milan and Inter first presented the project, which was recently revised, the costs of materials and personnel have drastically increased (Covid and Ukraine war). There is also the added issue of the 2026 Olympics, which will be hosted in Milano.

  1. Unless the structure of the San Siro is faulty, Ac and Inter should give serious thought on renovating it, with will and imagination, it could be renovated and refurbished and even added on…their is space for that….

    1. They have given it plenty of consideration and as they have explained, it isn’t just having to almost completely destroy everything to bring it up to modern standards leading to ridiculous costs but then the two teams would both need to find a new stadium that seats at least 40,000 people to host their games (19 matches per team) while the stadium gets renovated. The San Siro, while historic, simply is not an option as a modern stadium moving forward.
