Repubblica: Napoli must hope for severance with Pioli unwilling to give up Milan wages

By Oliver Fisher -

Stefano Pioli will almost certainly leave AC Milan in the summer but he is not willing to give up his wages for the final year of his deal.

As La Repubblica (via TMW) write this morning, Pioli will leave Milan once the season ends because the management no longer have faith that he is the right man to lead the team forward, despite the fact he has a contract until June 2025.

Possible replacements like Sergio Conceicao and Paulo Fonseca have been named, but before bringing them in Milan must work out some kind of exit strategy with Pioli given he still has another year left on his €4.5m net per season deal.

The paper state that Pioli is not willing to terminate his contract with Milan a year early and give up the final year of his wages, something that is not too uncommon in truth. That means the club will either need to agree some form of severance pay or keep paying him in 2024-25.

If there is no severance agreed then Pioli would be unable to accept a move to Napoli, who have been linked with appointing the 2021-22 Scudetto winner for next season as their owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is a big fan.

  1. There are two options. We cover the difference between current salary and what Napoli is offering him. Option N2 he gets his salary but rests an year without job. And if he chooses to sit out then fire him immediately. I doubt that next year he would have such market for his services as this summer.

    1. Well even if we fire him we still should pay his wages if he don’t coach another team. So that’s around 6,5 million down the drain. (Salary 4,5 + tax 43%)

Let’s hope he will go to Napoli.

      1. I believe the tax is calculated on the gross salary… so that would mean that if Pioli gets a 4.5 net salary, the total gross salary that we pay him is about 8 million.

That also doesn’t include any severance for his staff that is also likely to get fired.

      2. Yes, off course we would have to cover it. My point is if he chooses just to sit and reject all offers because he’s getting paid by us, than he doesn’t deserve the ‘respectful’ farewell at the end of season, but immediate dismissal.

  2. Napoli offer him 3m euro nett. ACM need to pay 1,5m euro nett . Of course ACM will hope pioli take napoli job , if pioli choose to rest one year then ACM will pay full 4,5m euro nett + tax
