Repubblica: PIF want majority stake in €1.6bn-valued Milan by end of the season

By Oliver Fisher -

The talk regarding a potential takeover of AC Milan never seems to go away, and a report this morning has claimed that there is interest from the Middle East.

This morning’s edition of La Repubblica (via Radio Rossonera) writes that PIF are interested in acquiring a majority stake in Milan. The newspaper have been reporting for several weeks that there could be changes at the top of the club, but today they’ve gone a bit further.

New rumours have arrived from the Middle East regarding the future corporate reorganisation of Milan because the fund interested in the Rossoneri are keen on getting a deal done as soon as possible.

That group are PIF (Public Investment Fund), i.e. the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia. In particular, investors attributable to Saudi Aramco (an oil company under the control of the fund since 2016) are the ones that are keen.

We are talking about an almost total acquisition too, because the paper states: ‘The fund are interested in acquiring the majority shares of the club by the end of the season’.

The indiscretion is important, both because it reveals the name and identity of those interested in taking over the club, and because it gives precise timing and guidelines: by the end of the season.

If in the summer of 2022 Milan were valued at €1.2bn and that was the figure agreed between RedBird Capital and Elliott Management, the club are now worth around €1.6bn as per the source.

The newspaper reports that ‘unofficially’ the news has filtered from Milan, RedBird and Gerry Cardinale that there is no intention to sell the majority shares of the club to the PIF fund in the short term.

The hypothesis put forward by Repubblica, however, goes in the opposite direction: “If two months ago it was Cardinale and AC Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani who travelled for meetings in Arabia, now the journey in the opposite direction of the PIF-Aramco emissaries would testify to the leap forward in the story.”

If La Repubblica are correct in their reporting, in the coming weeks the situation could become much clearer than it is today.

      1. Which player wouldn’t, we just miss out on the elite players for monetary reasons, our prestige, legacy and name is a footballing institution in my humble opinion have supported Milan since 1989.

  1. We”d still fall under FFP and whatever limiting laws Italy has. Dont expect massive spending sprees on players. But, if anything, this may help with the building of a new stadium and other tangible improvements to organization. Maybe improvements to Milanelo and Sports science facilities??

    1. Milan next season are safe hand

      Maignan
      Calabria tomori de light Theo
      Tijjani kimmich koopmeneirs
      Pulisic Mbappe Leao

      Coach guardiola or Conte

  2. Imagine Maldini walking back into his office with a briefcase of money as Furlani is clearing out his desk.

They burned the most iconic man in the history of Milan, a man who is respected, capable and smart.

It would not surprise me to see him do everything he can to get his club back

      1. I believe Ibra has only come back knowing that there will be substantial change and development and he wants to be at the ground level when it does.

He is a winner and would only have come back if he had certainties, I believe he is there on behalf of the investors coming into the club ( be it majority or minor similar to Sir J Radcliffe at MUFC).

    1. Can we just be done with this Maldini saviour stuff already?
      Milan is bigger than anyone.
With or without Maldini, Milan can and should be great again.

Milan made the Maldini name great, and not the other way round.

  3. Cardinale, fail vedere che hai buoni Interzone sul Milan, e vendi. Se vendi sara almeno un gesto che vuoi il bene del Milan e i l investitori, prego che questa volta viene uno con i soldi!!

  4. what idiots dont understand is Milan is still sanctioned till 2026, this wont do anything at all

Look at Newcastle and then you might get it

  5. As an Italian I don’t want this. It’s disgusting, no offence to the Arab fans but no, at least Gerri is an Italian. Italians never bend the knee to these people. And neither did Sylvio, I’m happy with Gerri, and if you don’t like it go support English football but remember, that’s all talk and nothing to show. They may have modernized the sport but we perfected it, 4 World Cups and we took the Euro’s from London to Rome.

  6. Minotiry investment would turn into majority takeover eventually. And if Newcastle are a model of how this will go, then PIF isn’t the way to go.

UNLESS they bring Maldini back and he shapes this Milan in his vision of youth and experience.

  7. BS rumors. Not going to happen. It’s not like they would poor the club with gold and money and all of a sudden we’d be in UCL final 6 years in a row.

Look how well Chelsea has done with their infinite money sources. Or Newcastle.

Get the stadium permits done and that will be the correct way to get Milan to the 6 finals… 😛

  8. We should all hope this happens. No it will NOT mean all of a sudden we are a financial powerhouse on the level with Man City and that we should start recklessly spending crazy amounts of $$. However, it will ensure we can get other things done – like not missing out on transfers over haggling over a few million dollars; not having to sell star players out of necessity to fund other transfers; being able to offer competitive salaries to match other bigger clubs so we don’t lose players; finance our own stadium; increase exposure in a huge market (Middle East) thus increasing more revenue; and not being saddled by a 600M loan with huge yearly interest payments. All positives. Money talks in sports that is a fact. Now it doesn’t mean it will guarantee you trophies – but it does make sure you have a chance at competing for them year in and year out. It still requires proper planning and management and a project with a vision. Hopefully we will have that as well. Not sure if this will happen or not but I for one hope that it will.

  9. And if the Arabs come in, buy us out and force us to get the ST Andrew’s cross off the crest… then what? Sounds crazy right? Kind of like that alternate logo we had years back on away kits…

    1. Does it matter? It’s a crest. This is a football club not a church. Respectfully, I don’t see your point at all. Many Arab owners own football clubs across Europe and I don’t recall any of them trying to impose religious symbols on any club. Not sure what you’re trying to say brother.

    2. do you know who bought the most expensive paint ever (it’s Jesus pict, is higher than Monalisa price)?
yes, the Arabs & they take care of it like a treasure
